Warming a bit on Thursday, before another arctic blast arrives
to close the week. Accumulating snow is likely as the blast
arrives, potentially heavy in the mountains.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 1005 PM Wednesday...
The Wind Chill Advisory that remained for the high elevations of
Pocahontas and Randolph has been allowed to expire as scheduled.
It will remain breezy on the high ridges through much of the
night, but with the ongoing gradual increase in temperatures
expected to continue overnight, wind chills will become less
hazardous.
As of 700 PM Wednesday...
No major changes were made to the forecast at this time.
Thursday highs were tweaked downward by a degree or so as cloud
cover arriving by dawn and thickening throughout the day will
likely limit temperature rises.
As of 1255 PM Wednesday...
As temperatures have been climbing today, wind chills have risen
above warning criteria in the higher elevations of the
mountains. Therefore, will downgrade the Wind Chill Warning to
and Advisory. Looks like advisory criteria will last into the
evening hours, so will run the advisory through 10 PM.
A high pressure system will build across the area providing dry
weather tonight into Thursday morning. While some light winds may
persist in some areas, believe that valleys in the West Virginia
mountains and Virginia mountains will decouple with good radiation
conditions. With snow on the ground, temperatures usually radiate
better than guidance expects, so lowered overnight temperatures in
the eastern valleys considerably.
Clouds will increase on Thursday as the next system approaches. With
snow on the ground, stayed with the NBM high temperatures which were
on lower side of guidance. A few models are showing snow arriving in
the afternoon, so do have some low chances west of the mountains.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 710 PM Wednesday...
Put our WV/OH/KY lowlands and SW VA counties not already in a
watch into a Winter Weather Advisory as we are approaching 24
hours to precip onset. There is good confidence of approaching
or exceeding the numerical criteria (2") in addition to the
likely transportation impacts to the Friday AM commute.
As of 235 PM Wednesday...
Mid/upper shortwave will drop south out of Canada/upper midwest
Thursday night into Friday, with a cold front sweeping across the
area late Thursday night into Friday, with slightly falling, or
little rise in temperatures expected for Friday. Winds will also
gradually pick up on Friday as the pressure gradient increases and
CAA takes hold. Light to moderate snow is expected across much of
the lowlands on Friday into Saturday, with heavier accumulations
across the mountains where a longer period of upslope will continue
on Saturday, although additional light accumulations are possible
across the lowlands Saturday with moisture fetch off Great Lakes
continuing. With the continued cold temperatures in place, expecting
hazardous travel once again. An additional shortwave will drop south
across the region Friday night into Saturday, bringing a reinforcing
shot of cold air to region. With the cold temperatures ushered in
with this system, and windy conditions, may see wind chill headlines
once again over the weekend, particularly across the mountains.
Have elected to hoist a winter storm watch for several counties
across the area. Foresee advisories being issued for remaining
counties in additional packages.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1120 AM Wednesday...
Snow will gradually taper off late Saturday evening into Sunday as
high pressure builds in for dry conditions. Temperatures will
gradually moderate early next week as surface high pressure and
upper ridge take hold across eastern U.S., with increasing southerly
flow. Rain will return mid week, as a low pressure system moves
north out of the Gulf region towards our area. Rain could be
moderate at times during the period, particularly as additional
waves of low pressure move through the area during the period.

.AVIATION /05Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1215 AM Thursday...
VFR conditions through the period under the influence of arctic
high pressure. BKN and OVC mid to high-level deck will
gradually move in from the west between ~07Z-09Z this morning,
with CIGs slowly lowering from W to E through the day.
A deepening, amplified upper-level trough will move in from the
west after ~22-23Z this evening. Going into Friday, MVFR/IFR
CIGs will be reintroduced with this feature, as will some SHSN
on the western fringes of the forecast area.
Light SW to W'rly winds through the period gusting no higher
than 5-12 knots across higher elevations. Any lingering gusty
winds should quickly diminish by ~09Z.
