.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure provides dry weather today. Strong low pressure
system brings heavy rain and strong gusty winds Tuesday. Brief
high pressure Wednesday. Another low pressure Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 850 PM Sunday...

Light precipitation continues this evening for portions of the
forecast area south and east of the Ohio River as a broad, low
amplitude trough across the eastern CONUS continues to quickly
shift across/east of the region. Snow showers are occurring at
elevations ~ 1,500 ft and greater, while a rain/snow mix across
the lowlands. There is currently a slight enhancement in
precipitation across central/southern portions of the forecast
area courtesy of a subtle upper wave on the backside of the
aforementioned trough. Activity should quickly diminish over the
next few hours as this pivots east of the area, with noted
drier air aloft (per water vapor imagery) on the doorstep of
the CWA. Snow showers linger longest across the mountains, but
will gradually dissipate in coverage as the night progresses,
with just a few lingering flurries possible by dawn. Did bump up
overnight snow totals slightly, with an additional inch or so
forecast for the mountains, with isolated amounts up to 2"
possible, while no accumulation for the lowlands. PoPs have also
been adjusted to reflect slightly greater coverage of activity
than originally anticipated. Otherwise, the forecast remains on
track, with no changes to the headlines at this time.

As of 1215 PM Sunday...

Upper level short wave moves off to the east taking moisture and
lift with it at the end of this period. This will taper off
POPs around 12Z Monday once 850mb moisture is the last to go
with little additional snowfall amounts expected and confined to
the northeast mountains. While some freezing rain or drizzle is
possible only a light glaze will still be an option in the
northeast mountains from now through the period. Any drizzle
leftover will diminish by this evening and just light snow
showers will be left through tonight in the mountains. Winds
could blow snow around on the ridgetops, therefore blowing snow
was entered into the forecast.

Upper level ridging traverses across the area the rest of
Monday with surface high pressure moving in from the south to
reinforce dry weather for the rest of Monday. Temperatures will
get a push downward with CAA overnight. Even with clouds they
will drop to the low to mid 20's area-wide with the exception
for the higher mountain ridgetops possibly seeing the mid to
low teens. Winds will diminish throughout period and pick back
up out of the southeast and intensify some toward Monday night
as a stronger gradient and llj builds in across the mountains.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 234 AM Monday...

Key Points:

* A deep low pressure system tracks from the OH Valley north into
  the Great Lakes region Tuesday into Wednesday.

* A period of freezing rain may be possible for areas typically
  affected by cold air damming (eastern Fayette to eastern Randolph
  Counties) early Tuesday morning prior to switching to rain.

* Locally damaging winds possible in downslope immediately northwest
  of the higher terrain, affecting southwest VA and the eastern
  mountains of WV on Tuesday.

* Strong winds may extend farther northwest from the higher
  terrain, approaching the eastern Metro Valley/I-79 corridor.

* Moderate to Heavy rain coupled with some melting snowpack may lead
  to minor flooding issues mainly across the eastern mountains
  Tuesday.

A deep surface low pressure system moves over the Ohio Valley
Tuesday morning, and track north northeast into the Great Lakes
region by Wednesday morning. Its proximity will produce a strong
pressure gradient into WV, bringing around 70 knots under southerly
flow at H850. These winds should reflect to the surface to produce
south to southeast wind gusts 30 to 45 knots across the lowlands,
and 50 to 60 knots across the central and northern mountains of WV.
Thus, most of the High Wind Watch will be upgraded to a High
Wind Warning, roughly across the central and northern mountains,
with a buffer of counties in a Wind Advisory across southwest
VA and western slopes of WV from midnight tonight until Tuesday
evening.

In terms of precipitation, onset expected during the predawn hours
Tuesday morning, starting as light rain across the lowlands and
freezing rain over the northeast mountains. Then, strong WAA will
spread moderate to heavy rainfall across the area. Models QPF
solutions suggest the bulk of rainfall along the eastern mountains
on Tuesday, perhaps with a lull across the lowlands into Tuesday
afternoon. Yet, another batch of rainfall should spread from west to
east Tuesday evening as stronger upper air forcing arrives.
Expecting from 0.50 to 1.0 inch of rain across the Middle Ohio
valley, northeast KY and the WV lowlands, while 1 to 2 inches will
be possible along the central and northern mountains. The heavy
rainfall and some melting from current snowpack raise a concern for
flooding. As a result, WPC has a Marginal Risk of excessive rainfall
along the eastern mountains of WV.

Model consensus suggest heavy rainfall gradually exits the region
Wednesday evening, followed by a dry slot. Strong CAA behind a cold
front with H850 temperatures dropping to -5C by Tuesday night
will bring wrap around snow showers into the Middle Ohio valley
and WV Tuesday night into Wednesday. It will remain gusty
Tuesday night and Wednesday as H850 winds 40 to 50 knots switch
from the west southwest under CAA. A Wind Advisories may be
needed across the highest elevations of our northeast mountains
for Wednesday with up to 45 knots wind gusts expected.

Upper level flow becomes nearly zonal as the upper level low/trough
departs northeast Wednesday afternoon. This will bring the end
of snow showers across the lowlands, lingering until the evening
over the northeast mountains. Surface high pressure across the
southeast keep widespread dry conditions Wednesday night, and
mainly across the south for Thursday and Thursday night with
slightly above normal temperatures. However, there is a slight
chance for precipitation across the northern sections as a small
mid level shortwave passes north of the area Thursday and
Thursday night.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 234 AM Monday...

Synoptic models indicate that another potent low pressure
system will track even closer to the area, bringing strong
winds, heavy rain and snow at the back end Friday night and
Saturday. High confidence exists per agreement between the GFS
and ECMWF models on the temperatures and wind profiles and upper
air forcing. Therefore, confident on forecasting liquid
precipitation Friday afternoon and evening, transitioning into
snow Friday night into Saturday under strong CAA at H850.
Confidence drops as models show different solutions Friday night
into the weekend.

.AVIATION /08Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 1250 AM Monday...

Light snow showers continue along the mountains, though activity
should diminish into the morning. MVFR to VFR ceilings are
currently present, with occasional reductions to IFR remaining
possible in snow. While most sites should remain MVFR/VFR into
the morning, a period of lower ceilings is possible along the
mountains before daybreak. Conditions improve to areawide VFR
by afternoon while cloud cover diminishes roughly from south to
north. VFR should then continue for the rest of the TAF period.

Winds become calm to light during the morning, then east to
southeasterly flow increases from afternoon through the night as
a system approaches. Winds become gusty along the mountains
overnight - potentially exceeding gusts of 30kts along the
ridges. A period of LLWS is also possible beyond 00Z, before
the stronger winds aloft begin to mix down to the surface.

Lingering snow showers will gradually taper off through midnight,
or shortly thereafter, with an additional half an inch of snow in
some locations. Slick spots are possible overnight, particularly
across the higher ridges. If traveling tonight, slow down and
allow extra time to reach your destination. Use caution, especially
on secondary and back roads.
