Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 953 AM MST Sat Feb 24 2024 .KEY MESSAGES... - Mild temperatures to start the weekend for Saturday. - Strong winds late Sunday and into much of Monday. - Snow will begin out west early Monday morning spreading east of the Divide later in the afternoon and evening lasting into Wednesday morning. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 1211 AM MST Sat Feb 24 2024 IR currently depicts a mostly clear look over much of the CWA with a weak wave pushing in some mid level clouds across northwest sections. Upper level ridging extends across much of the Rockies and into the Great Plains giving way to a dry northwest flow for the CWA. Saturday will see some breezy winds for much of the area with the wind prone areas seeing 20-30 mph gusts and into the overnight hours. Throughout the day, an upper level low off the California coast continues to deepen with increasing divergence aloft as it slowly pushes east. It becomes more elongated extending northeastward orienting in a positive tilt. As it nears closer eastward, the gradient will tighten even moreso through the CWA (~8-10mb northwest to southeast) that will give way to strong winds late Sunday afternoon and into much of Monday. Confidence is high in occurrence for areas east of the Divide (>90% probability) as a dry shortwave extends through the area. Higher terrain will see gusts up to 70-80mph with lower valleys seeing gusts up to around 50 mph. Areas west of the Divide will still see gusty winds but not as strong (50-60 mph for higher terrain and 30-40 mph for lower valleys). Next will come a stronger push of a shortwave throughout the day Monday as snow begins out west in the morning before spreading east later in the afternoon and into the overnight hours. Snow rates west of the Divide looks to be over 4-6 inches late morning into the mid afternoon hours. High confidence (80-90%) of over of moderate snow amounts west of the Divide. Over 12 inches expected for the higher terrain with locally higher amounts up to 18 inches possible (less confidence ~30-40%). Lower valleys have high confidence of over 4 to 6 inches (70-80%). Snow will linger west of the Divide into Tuesday morning with smaller snow rates into the afternoon before exiting east. East of the Divide, lesser amounts in the lower basins up to 2-4 inches possible (low confidence of 30-40%). Higher terrain to include the Bighorns and Casper Mountain have a higher confidence of 6-12 inches (60-70%) and thus warranting the Winter Weather Watches issued at this time. Weaker rates east as well into the afternoon hours Tuesday before exiting east Wednesday morning. This is all reinforced by a strong PVA signature associated with a quick moving cold front that will push through late Monday and into early Tuesday morning. Mild temperatures will end for Tuesday becoming more seasonable before becoming mild once again by week's end as a more zonal upper flow returns before becoming more southwesterly as another system approaches from the GOA into the Pacific Northwest. Winds will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, albeit not near as strong that will aid in the winter weather concerns before returning to more normal conditions for the end of the week. Longer term models have this GOA low near by late Saturday and into Sunday that could bring the next round of precipitation and closer to seasonable temperatures once again through early the following week. Time will tell as confidence is low at this point this far out with the current system approaching more of a concern at this point. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z SUNDAY/... Issued at 954 AM MST Sat Feb 24 2024 VFR conditions will be in place across the forecast area through the TAF period. FEW-SCT FL200-250 clouds will slowly move southward from MT through the day, staying mostly on the east side of the Divide. Lower clouds around 3k to 5kft AGL over northwestern portions will lead to mountain obscurations, along with light snow. Any snow is expected to stay over the mountains and not lead to a direct impact to KJAC. The main impact through the forecast will be wind, where gusts around 25 kt will be common this afternoon.
