PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio 
furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds increase 
which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare 
ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, 
flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a 
power outage.

.SYNOPSIS...

A warming trend will bring unseasonably mild and dry weather to the
region through the weekend. A cold front brushing across northern
NV and weak upper disturbance over the Sierra could bring light
snow accumulations Monday and Monday night, but the main effect
is expected to be stronger wind gusts. A brief pause mid week
will be followed by a more potent winter storm as March begins.

.DISCUSSION...

Before we get to the rather modest storm that starts next week,
we'll have a weekend with more of an early spring feel to it.
Highs today are on track to reach 60 degrees in some lower
elevations with lower 50s for Sierra communities. Light winds
will keep valley inversions with light urban haze around Reno and
Carson City, and patchy fog for the next couple of mornings around
the Martis and Sierra valleys. By Sunday, improved mixing in the
afternoon with SW-W breezes gusting to 20-30 mph will allow for
even more warming with highs pushing into the lower-mid 60s for
western NV valleys--about 10 degrees above average.

Monday's Storm--More Wind Than Rain/Snow:

Increasing 700 mb flow of 50-60 kt ahead of a cold front dropping
in from the north will produce a round of strong ridge top winds
Monday afternoon-evening with peak gusts 100+ mph for Sierra
ridges west of Tahoe, and 60-80 mph along the crest in Mono
County. For lower elevations, areas from US-50 northward are
currently on track to see peak gusts of 45-55 mph Monday
afternoon-evening, with 60-70 mph possible in wind prone areas.

This cold front and its best forcing for producing bands of
enhanced rain/snow initially reaches northwest NV by Monday
evening, but the majority of the latest guidance then shifts the
best precip chances farther east across north central-northeast
NV. As currently projected, an inch or two of snow could
accumulate overnight in areas north of a Pyramid Lake-Lovelock
line and produce some slick driving conditions for I-80 across
Pershing County. This leaves the remainder of western NV
especially near and south of I-80 with just a glancing blow, with
no snow or only a dusting projected for the main urban areas.

Meanwhile, a weak upper disturbance breaking off from the main low
off the southern CA coast, along with orographic flow up the west
side of the Sierra will bring increasing chances for snow from
Monday morning through Monday evening near the crest. Latest
projections indicate 5-10" in higher elevations and over main
passes, but amounts drop off quickly going to the east, with the
consensus ensemble guidance around 2" at lake level around Tahoe,
and along US-395 in Mono County. We're not fully writing off this
system's Sierra snow potential, as there are outlier scenarios
(about 10-20% chance) that produce around 1 foot of snow along the
crest and up to 6" around Tahoe at lake level.

Tuesday Onward--A Short Break, then March Roars In with Possible
Major Storm:

By Tuesday, any leftover snow showers are likely to end during the
morning, leaving behind a brisk and chilly day with highs mainly
in the 40s-near 50 across the region. Temperatures rebound quickly
Wednesday by about 10 degrees, with dry conditions and light winds
prevailing that provide a chance to stock up on winter supplies
(keep on reading!).

As February transitions to March, the medium range ensemble
guidance continues to show signals for a powerful storm coming
into the western US. The leading edge of moisture may come in on
Thursday with winds also ramping upward, but the majority of
guidance shows the main moisture push along with peak winds coming
in during the Friday-Saturday time frame. Some of the more
aggressive scenarios bring many ingredients together for
potentially the largest snow event of the season in the Sierra.
For western NV, a rainy and windy start could transition to a
sharply colder air mass with continued feed of widespread
moisture/forcing, putting the main urban areas also at risk for a
substantial snowfall, as we head into the first weekend of March.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions prevail for all regional terminals through the
remainder of this weekend. Light winds and mostly clear
conditions will produce patchy FZFG around KTRK today and Sunday
morning, with periods of IFR/LIFR conditions between roughly
08-17z. Additionally, valley inversions and urban haze may lead
to minor slantwise visibility reductions for KRNO-KCXP-KMEV
through early afternoon today.

Winds will begin to increase Sunday with afternoon gusts of 20-25
kt helping to clear out any lingering urban haze, with more
significant wind impacts including widespread turbulence, mountain
wave activity, and areas of LLWS expected on Monday. MJD
