Issued at 413 AM MST Tue Nov 5 2024 Currently...northwest flow aloft has spread across southern Colorado early this morning as yesterday's system departs to the east. Winds have helped keep temperatures slightly elevated this morning with temperatures in the mid 20s to lower 30s across the Plains. A few areas over the San Luis Valley have fallen into the teens. Today...an upper level trough is forecast to dig south out of the Northern Rockies and across Utah. As it does so, flow aloft will transition to southwesterly by this afternoon. This will help mixing this afternoon and help temperatures rise through the 50s across the Plains. Snow will develop by this afternoon along the Continental Divide and begin to spread eastward by late afternoon. Snowfall rates this afternoon look to be on the lighter side over the higher terrain, and Winter Weather Advisories have been posted for the Continental Divide. Tonight...the upper trough will develop into a closed low near the Four Corners region by Wednesday morning. A cold front is forecast to drop south behind a developing surface low overnight. Flow behind the low will transition north to northeasterly across the Plains. Snow and rain is forecast to develop initially behind the cold front, switching to all snow by Wednesday morning. There are some areas of confidence for heavier snowfall. Given the low level flow direction, areas over the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains will see the heaviest snow beginning early this evening. Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for these areas. For the Pikes Peak Region, high-res model guidance has trended downward with QPF and snow amounts. Opted for Winter Weather Advisories for these areas from this evening, overnight. The HRRR, ARW and FV3 are all pretty dry, with a few inches over Teller County, and minor accumulations over northern El Paso County. The NAM4km is the most aggressive with snowfall amounts over the Palmer Divide. Just know that forecast snow amounts may be overdone if the higher resolution guidance verifies. Snow levels will fall overnight, changing to all snow by mid to late evening along the I-25 corridor. Winter Weather Advisories look good for the southern I-25 corridor. The big question mark at this time will be eastern Fremont and western portions of Pueblo County, where snow totals could be slightly higher and reach advisory levels. Issued at 413 AM MST Tue Nov 5 2024 Wednesday-Wednesday night...Latest operational models and ensemble data still indicate a broad upper trough digging across the Intermountain West and Great Basin into early Wednesday morning, with a developing low digging across the Four Corners region Wednesday afternoon before continuing to dig south and west into the Desert SW Wednesday night. Movement of this system, along with strong uvv and mid level waa within south to southwest flow aloft, along with surface to h7 north to northeast flow behind the systems cold front across the plains, will keep snow ongoing over and near the higher terrain through the day Wednesday, with a band of of precipitation lifting out across southeast Colorado Wednesday morning. Precipitation tapers off from north to south through Wednesday evening, especially along and north of the Highway 50 Corridor, as the upper low continues to dig south and west. With that said, there still is an exceptional amount of uncertainty with the amount of qpf and snowfall through this period, especially across the Pikes Peak region where the last several runs of higher res model data continues to indicate very little in the way of accumulations. At any rate, will continue with current advisories for areas over and near the higher terrain through Wednesday afternoon and evening, save for the winter storm warning across the Wet and Sangre de Cristo Mtns, with favored north/northeast upslope flow. As for temperatures, highs Wednesday in the 30s to low 40s across the plains will likely be early in the day, as caa and surface to h7 north northeast winds increase through the the mate morning and afternoon. Overnight lows to be below seasonal levels in the teens and 20s, with a cold airmass in place. Thursday-Monday...There continues to much uncertainty in the upcoming forecast for Thursday into the early weekend, as operational models continue to indicate run to run differences on the location and timing of the cut off low pressure system lifting out across the southern Rockies, leading to differing amounts of precipitation and type, especially across southeast Colorado. However, ensemble mean data seem to be honing in on the system digging well south of the region into southeast Arizona through the day Thursday, before lifting out across southern New Mexico and into the Texas/OK Panhandle Friday night. With the trend of the slower and further south ejection of the system, expecting the continued operational model trend of lowering of qpf across the region Thursday, leading to more time to decide on if more warnings or advisories will be needed or just extended across the southeast mtns and portions of the plains. Slick, snowpacked roads and poor visibility due to blowing snow are forecast overnight along the Interstate 25 corridor. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday Snow and slick conditions continues through the day Wednesday before tapering off from north to south Wednesday evening, with snow totals of 8 to 16 inches expected across the Sangre de Cristo and Wet mountains, and the Wet Mountain Valley. Snowfall of 5 to 10 inches is expected across the Central and Southwest mountains, with 3 to 8 inches of snow across the Pikes Peak and Palmer Divide region, as well as across the southern I-25 Corridor and northern portions of the San Luis Valley. Lesser amounts of 1 to 3 inches will also be possible across the rest of south central and southeast Colorado by Wednesday evening. More storm impacts may be possible Thursday through Saturday, although uncertainty exists on the track of the storm system and amount of cold air associated with it, leading to uncertainty on precipitation amounts and type for the end of the work week. There remains the possibility that portions of the southern mountains and plains to receive significant precipitation, including heavy snow, leading to possible significant impacts to travel across portions of southern Colorado.
