Issued at 345 AM MST Mon Feb 5 2024 Currently...satellite imagery early this morning shows areas of low clouds across El Paso County, and areas of the far Eastern Plains. Areas of patchy fog are possible out near the Kansas border this morning, with reduced visibilities on area highways the main impact. Temperatures are currently running in the 20s for most of the Plains with the exception of out near the Kansas border where the clouds have kept temperatures in the mid 30s. Teens are widespread across the San Luis Valley. Today and tonight...upper level ridging will transit the state through this afternoon, shifting east into the Central Plains tonight. Flow will shift southwesterly throughout the day. Mixing will allow for temperatures to warm nicely, with most areas on the Plains reaching the mid 40s to lower 50s. Expect the areas of low clouds to dissipate this morning across the Plains along with any areas of patchy fog. As flow aloft increases out of the southwest this afternoon and tonight, increasing mid and high cloud cover will spread across the region. Overnight lows will likely be slightly warmer, with mainly upper 20s to lower 30s across the Plains, and teens over the San Luis Valley. Moisture will be on the increase along the Continental Divide overnight, and an isolated snow shower cannot be ruled out by daybreak across the San Juan Range. Issued at 345 AM MST Mon Feb 5 2024 Tuesday through Thursday...Good agreement between the models continues as a strong Pacific storm system moves onshore late tonight. This will produce very strong southwest flow across the Four Corners, drawing moisture up into western CO Tue and Wed while at the same time creating strong south to southwest surface winds across the eastern plains. Snow is expected to begin along the Continental Divide, and especially across the southwest mts, Tue morning and continue through the day before spreading to the high valleys and remaining mts. Impressive new snowfall totals are anticipated for the Eastern San Juan Mts and the La Garita Mts through Thu, so a winter storm watch has been issued for those areas. Current thinking is the remaining higher elevations should see advisory snow amounts, so further highlights are likely from following crews. While snow is falling across the higher terrain Tue and Wed, the strong surface flow for the lower elevations will produce very warm conditions, with mid 60s likely for much of eastern CO. Models still show the low center ejecting to the northeast across the Great Basin on Wed and tracking to the north of CO through Thu. This path will help spread some light pcpn across the Palmer Divide Wed night through Thu, and bring slightly cooler temps to the forecast area. As for temps, plan on highs across the high valleys in the mid 40s to mid 50s on Tue, 40s on Wed and 30s on Thu. For the plains, expect highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s Tue, 50s to lower 60s on Wed, and mid 40s to upper 50s on Thu. Friday through Sunday...A very unsettled pattern remains in place for the upcoming weekend, as now two separate low centers rotate around the longwave trough and across the region. These disturbances will originate from the Pacific NW, so this is still trending to be a colder solution into the weekend. This means more snow for the higher terrain, and a better shot of a rain/snow mix for the plains Sat and Sun. High temps all three days for the high valleys are expected to remain in the 30s.
