Issued at 302 PM MST Wed Jan 31 2024 Currently...Upper ridge has pushed east into the central US, while an upper shortwave over Utah has kept mid and high level cloudiness in place across the forecast area. Regardless, temps have climbed into the 40s and 50s for the high valleys, and upper 50s and 60s for the plains. Tonight...Very little change to the upper pattern is expected for the area tonight, with dry conditions continuing. The upper shortwave will weaken as it slowly tracks east across Colorado, but high level cloudiness will remain in place for much of the evening before some clearing Thursday morning. Overnight minimum temps are forecast to cool into the teens and 20s for the high valleys, and upper 20s and 30s for the plains. The strong incoming Pacific storm will continue to push onshore tonight. Tomorrow...Models are in very good agreement on continuing the onshore progression of the incoming low pressure system, with the upper jet propagating an atmospheric river aimed at southern California. Isolated snow showers will develop across the southwest mts during the afternoon, with a slow but steady increase in coverage and intensity along all of the Continental Divide late afternoon into the evening. However, any accumulations through the first half of the day will be minimal. Meanwhile, another very warm and dry day is expected across the plains as the overriding flow turns more west to southwest. Look for highs in the 40s to lower 50s for the high valleys, and upper 50s to mid 60s for the plains, which end up being 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal normals. Moore && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Issued at 302 PM MST Wed Jan 31 2024 Model consistency continues to be in flux regarding our next incoming system for late week into the weekend. As of now, confidence remains very high (>80%) in precipitation forming across portions of the San Juan Mountains and the Continental Divide, starting late Thursday Night into early Friday. Heavy snow will hit the mountain peaks in those areas, before spreading east throughout the day Friday and Saturday. Deterministic guidance is still a bit staggered on the track and timing of the low, with the GFS a bit more north, while the Canadian and EC are a bit south and just a little slower. The low will stack up vertically as it moves right over Southern Colorado, and because of this a minor shift in storm track will cause notable changes in our precipitation forecast. Looking at potential snow totals, The EPS continues to be on the wetter side of the ensembles over the plains, with the deterministic NAM, Canadian, and EC following close behind. The GFS, being a bit more north, has much less QPF across the plains in general. The rain/snow line will be one of our main forecast complexities here, with warm surface temps Friday-Saturday in the 40s-50s across our southeast plains. Current NBM guidance suggests that the plains will get strictly rain, sometimes heavy depending on the positioning of the upper low, but if a convective snow band manages to push east off of the higher terrain and is enhanced by the upper low, some accumulating snow out east could be possible. Current confidence in this occuring though, is rather low (~20%). Otherwise, heavy widespread rain will be possible, along with a few possible thunderstorms, especially closer to the Kansas border. Our areas that will see the greatest accumulations from this event will be the higher terrain. The San Juans and parts of the Central Mountains, already under a Winter Storm Watch along with some of the La Garitas, will get hit first, with storm totals of 1-2 feet possible in places. The Palmer Divide will also do well out of this event, with the current NBM forecast putting 8-12 inches over parts of Teller County, and locally heavy amounts near Monument. The Palmer will be one of those areas with a more variable snow forecast based on the track of the incoming low, but overall should still see impactful snow. Where things become a bit less confident are over our southeast mountains and the Raton. The Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains will get hit with snow later on in the event, late Friday through Sunday, and while the peaks will likely see heavy snowfall, the slopes and mountains/plains interface are still in flux and will be very dependent on the track of the low and the behavior of the 700mb flow. Finally, the Raton Mesa area and southern I-25, based on today's data, should not be seeing that much accumulating snowfall, maybe a few inches at most. Surface temperatures will be far too warm for regular snow showers, but if the low manages to shift south we could be seeing more cold air advection and stronger upsloping from the north, which could lead to locally higher snow amounts. The low will depart our CWA by the end of the day on Sunday, taking most of the precipitation with it. There will be a brief lull in activity on Monday beneath a brief upper-ridge, before precipitation moves into the mountains again towards the middle of next week, along with seasonably warm temperatures. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...
