Issued at 353 AM MST Thu Jan 11 2024 Currently.. Satellite imagery depicts increasing cloud cover pushing across our forecast area ahead of an approaching positively tilted trough axis that is currently moving across the Great Basin. Snow has begun across our central mountains. West winds and increasing cloud cover are keeping temperatures in the 20s and 30s across our mountain adjacent plains as 3 AM. Clear skies and calm winds on our far eastern plains have led to temperatures in the teens through portions of Kiowa, Prowers, and Baca counties. Today.. Models push a cold front across our plains around 10 or 11 AM this morning. This will keep daytime highs in the 20s and low 30s for areas along and north of Highway 50, with mid 30s possible across our southern plains. Winds become northeasterly behind the front, helping light upslope enhanced snowfall to spread into the I-25 corridor through the late morning hours, and across our eastern plains through the early afternoon. Any accumulations are forecast to be very light for lower elevations, with generally less than 1 inch expected. Southeastern Pueblo County and the Wet Mountains will be the main exception to this, as they could see up to 3 inches with favorable northeasterly winds. For the high country, snow tapers off across the central mountains, the La Garitas, and the northern Sangres, where only another 1 to 3 inches of new snow is expected by noon. Snow continues into the afternoon and evening hours for the San Juans, where another 4 to 6 inches of new snow is expected by 5 PM tonight. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for this area until 5 PM this evening. The southern Sangres will keep moderate to heavy at times snowfall rates into the overnight hours. Another 4 to 6 inches of new snowfall is expected over this area, and their Winter Weather Advisory is out until 11 PM tonight. Tonight.. After a brief lull in snowfall from about 5 PM to 11 PM this evening, expecting conditions to worsen over the central mountains as the trough axis finally pushes its way across the forecast area. This feature will increase winds and snowfall rates as early as 11 PM tonight, keeping moderate to heavy snowfall over all of Lake County and higher elevations of Chaffee County from late tonight onwards. Winds are expected to gust up to 70 mph through the overnight hours across the central mountains as well, which could lead to degraded visibilities and dangerous road conditions, especially over mountain passes. The likelihood of heavy and wind driven snow has led to the issuance of a Winter Weather Watch for the central mountains from 11 PM tonight until 5 PM Saturday evening. Our post frontal airmass will allow temperatures to cool into the single digits above zero on our plains, with temperatures falling into the teens and single digits below zero for our mountains and mountain valleys. Coldest expected wind chills look to be across the San Luis Valley, where another Wind Chill Advisory is in place for 2 AM through 9 AM Friday morning. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Issued at 353 AM MST Thu Jan 11 2024 Complex scenario evolving with multiple winter weather highlights and impacts to contend with in the long term, ranging from strong winds and blowing snow Friday, to arctic cold and dangerous wind chills for the plains beginning Saturday night and continuing through Tuesday morning. Impacts across the central mountains will evolve from moderate snow and extensive blowing snow through Saturday, then heavier snow with areas of blowing snow for Saturday night through Sunday night. There could also be some light snow at times across the southeast plains behind the arctic cold front, though amounts look light at this point with impacts mainly revolving around very cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Numerous highlights have been issued starting with Winter Storm Watches across the central mountains Friday night through Saturday. Although amounts will be on the light side of warning criteria for this area, the very strong winds (nearing high wind criteria) will cause extensive blowing snow resulting in dangerous travel conditions enhancing impacts above mere advisory criteria. Wind Chill Watches have been posted for most of the plains from Saturday night through Tuesday morning. Now for the details...Friday will be the last warmish day across the area across the lower elevations. A strong upper level jet will move in overhead increasing winds across the mountains and adjacent plains. Model cross-sections show a lot of forward shear, so this does not look like a mountain wave damaging wind event in the true sense. However it will not take much for mixing to transport 60+ mph into the lower elevations of the central mountains and Sangre De Cristo mountains, and higher peaks could easily see 75 mph winds across the Sawatch range. Snow continues on Friday into Friday night across the central mountains and in spite of new accumulations more in the advisory range (4-10 inches) the strong winds will cause extensive blowing snow and enhance impacts into warning criteria. Have put up a winter storm watch which continues through Saturday to account for this. There will be a lull in the snowfall Saturday afternoon but then it will ramp back up again Saturday night through Sunday with another wave of energy moving through NW flow aloft, and even into Monday with continued northwesterly orographic flow. Likely another Watch will be needed for this next round as impacts from blowing snow look to continue. Snowfall looks lighter for the remainder of the mountains though expect another round with the next wave Saturday night into Sunday. Some advisories may be needed for the southwest mountains and Sangres, though it is difficult to say at this point as heavier amounts look restricted to higher areas. The arctic cold front will push into southeast CO Friday night and Saturday with temperatures falling through the day, especially across eastern areas. This first push will be shallow, though it does appear to bank up into the lower eastern slopes of the southeast mountains during the afternoon. Given the likelihood for this cold air to push in sooner and stay firmly in place, took down high temperatures from the optimistically warm national model blends along the I-25 corridor and lower eastern slopes. There will be quite a gradient in temperatures though, with readings in the 20s and lower 30s not too far up the slopes from single digits and lower teens within the arctic airmass below. There is still a lot of room for change in the Saturday high temperatures. Meanwhile, the far eastern plains will struggle to warm above 10 degrees near the KS border. Saturday night into Sunday is when the cold air deepens across the plains and will be the beginning of the dangerous wind chill potential. Wind Chill Watches begin Saturday evening and will continue through Tuesday morning. While it is likely the coldest wind chills (warning criteria of 25 below or colder across the plains) will be during the night and early morning hours, wind chills will likely keep apparent temperatures below 0 even during the day time hours. It is possible some of the western fringes of the Watch area will be more in the Wind Chill Advisory criteria range, but will sort that out with future model runs. Kept temperatures on the cold side of guidance and ensemble solutions with temperatures staying in the single digits to around 10 degrees for Sunday and Monday. Amount of warming on Monday may be pretty limited. There will also be the potential for rounds of snow across the plains as the arctic airmass saturates through this period. The best chance will be Sunday as the shortwave ejects across the area.
