Current water vapor imagery has moderate southwest flow aloft
across the region as an upper trough and distinct circulation
is digging into the into the Four Corners region early this
morning. At the surface, gusty northerly winds in place across
the plains, as a cold front continues to push south into NE
New Mexico at this time. Regional radars are indicating the band
of that was over the Pikes Peak region last night has pushed
north and east into northeast Colorado, with snow now filling in
across the SE mtns attm.
Flow aloft becomes more southerly over the next 24 hours, as
the upper low/trough continues to dig south and west into central
Arizona later tonight. This moist southerly overrunning flow, along
with east to northeast mid level flow, will keep snow ongoing
across the region through the day, with the highest amounts of
another 6 to 12 inches in the favored east to northeast flow areas
of the Wet and Sangre de Cristo Mtns. East to northeast mid level
flow also favors the eastern slopes of the San Juan/La Garita mtns
with 5 to 10 inches expected, with 3 to 6 inches across the San
Luis Valley, the southern I-25 Corridor and northern portions of
the Pikes Peak/Palmer Dvd. Another 1 to 3 inches will be possible
across the rest of south central and southeast Colorado through
out the day. With that said, we have kept current warnings and
advisories in place, which peel off through the late morning and
early afternoon across southern El Paso county, as the northerly
winds helps to taper precipitation. With the expected northerly
surface winds and caa through the day, highs in the mid 20s to mid
30s across the plains will likely be reached early in the day,
with steady and decreasing temperatures through the afternoon and
evening. Precipitation expected to wane north to south through
the afternoon and early evening, though looks to pick up again
late this evening and into the overnight hours, especially across
the southern tier of Colorado, as another round of lift and
moisture spreads across the Southern Rockies.

Major winter storm expected on the Plains Thursday through
Friday night...
Models and ensembles are in good agreement with the evolution
and track of an upper storm system across the Desert Southwest
into eastern Colorado/western Kansas from Thursday through
Fright night. This is a slow moving storm system and will bring
a prolonged period of enhanced precipitation to the plains. The
main question will be temperatures with far more snow possible
if temperatures are a couple of degrees colder.
Thursday through Friday night...models in good agreement with an
upper low slowly moving Arizona into southern New Mexico, then
lifting northeast into western Kansas by Saturday morning.
Southerly flow in the mid levels will advect abundant moisture
northward into southern Colorado on Thursday. Widespread
snowfall is expected across most of the Plains on Thursday. The
exception will likely be out near the Kansas border where warm
air advection keeps temperatures in the mid to upper 30s.
Elsewhere, temperatures are likely to remain in the upper 20s
to lower 30s keeping precipitation type as snow. Northeasterly
surface flow will focus the heaviest snowfall over the southern
Sangre de Cristo Mountains and southern I-25 corridor for much
of the day. There could be a brief lull in activity Thursday
night, especially for areas to the north as the upper low moves
into central New Mexico. However, heavier snow will likely
continue down near the New Mexico border overnight.
The big day looks to be Friday. Lots of ingredients coming
together for another round of heavier snowfall. Deep easterly
upslope flow (700 mb winds 30+ kts) are expected throughout the
day as the upper low begins to lift northeast. Steep isentropic
lift, upslope flow and deep moisture are pegged across our
eastern plains. Upward omega values are also peaking on Friday
across the Plains. The main question will once again be
temperatures. Lowered temperatures 3 to 5 degrees off of model
output with snow already on the ground, and heavier
precipitation likely keeping temperatures low. This will also
impact rain and snow. Lower elevations out near the Kansas
border may continue to see all rain, with lower elevations down
the Arkansas River into Pueblo seeing a mix. Again, heavier snow
is focused along the Sangre's, Wets and southern I-25 corridor.
There are a couple of other areas to monitor as well. Easterly
flow is forecast to flow into the San Luis Valley. The eastern
slopes of the San Juan Mountains and the southern portion of the
San Luis Valley floor could do quite well with this storm and a
Winter Storm Watch has been issued.
The Pikes Peak Region will likely see periods of heavy snow as
well. They have also been included in a Winter Storm Watch.
Pueblo County has been included as well, but there is some
uncertainty. Western portions of the county will see the
heaviest snow, however, impacts could reach as far east as the
I-25 corridor.
As for snow totals, the highest amounts are expected over the
southern Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains, east into the
southern I-25 corridor. Mountain areas will likely see 1 to 3
feet of snow with locally higher amounts. LREF probability of
greater than 18 inches are high over the Raton Mesa area as well
and 1 to 2 feet may reach down across much of Las Animas County.
Further east, snow will likely be dependent on temperatures. If
temperatures are cooler than currently forecast, snow totals
will likely need to be addressed.
Snow amounts could be much higher than what are currently
forecast, with significant impacts to travel, power and
agriculture. We will continue to monitor the evolution of this
storm system, and you should monitor the forecast for the latest
updates to this system.
The upper storm system will pull away from the area on Saturday
with precipitation coming to an end by Saturday afternoon.
Sunday through Wednesday...did not stray away from the NBM
guidance as most of my focus was on the storm. Generally drier
conditions and a warming trend are forecast for early next week.

The heaviest snow is expected across the southern mountains, with 6 to 12 inches expected across the Wet and Sangre de Cristo mountains. Five to ten inches of snow will be possible across the eastern slopes of the San Juan and La Garita mountains, with 3 to 6 inches across the San Luis Valley, the southern I-25 Corridor and northern portions of the Pikes Peak/Palmer Dvd. Another 1 to 3 inches will also be possible across the rest of south central and southeast Colorado through out the day. In addition to the snow, gusty northerly winds of 15 to 30 mph across southeast Colorado will lead to local areas of blowing snow with slick and slow travel at times, especially across the southeast mountains and southern Interstate 25 corridor. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday Periods of heavy snow are likely Thursday through Friday night across southern portions of the San Luis Valley, southern Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains, east into the southern Interstate 25 corridor. Heavy snow will also be possible across the Pikes Peak region. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet are possible for the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountain ranges. 1 to 2 feet is possible for the southern Interstate 25 corridor. Elsewhere, generally 5 to 10 inches may be possible. Areas near the Kansas border will depend on how warm temperatures rise, with mostly rain or a rain and snow mix, limiting snow accumulations. Snowfall amounts could be much higher, especially for the southern mountains, east over the southern Interstate 25 corridor and along the New Mexico border. Monitor the forecast for any changes. Snow will come to an end on Saturday morning. Light snow may be possible across the mountains by the middle of next week. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
