Issued at 248 PM MST Thu Jan 11 2024 Tonight... A major shortwave trough embedded within the longwave trough over the region is exiting with some lingering snow showers along portions of the I-25 corridor that will continue into the late hours overnight, mainly south of Walsenburg. There will likely be a few more inches of snow over the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and possibly an inch or two over the Raton Mesa before these snow showers taper off completely. Snow showers will also continue to taper off over the eastern San Juan Mountains, but this should temporarily come to an end as well before picking back up tomorrow with the approach of another wave. Very cold air has advected in from the north behind the front, and there will likely be most locations over the plains dropping down into the single digits, and perhaps even at zero or below at/or in the vicinity of Lamar. Meanwhile, over the central mountains, snow showers have been increasing ahead of another major shortwave that is approaching the region, which will also resulted in an increase of winds as well out of the west-northwest due to brute forcing in the mid to upper levels. Clouds continuing to clear out will allow for some efficient radiational cooling and therefore these locations could still get very cold, especially in the high wind-protected valleys, such as the upper Rio Grande Valley where lows could drop well below zero degrees. For the San Luis Valley, temperatures will also get very cold and down around the -20F degree mark, which will cause chill values to be down to -35F, due to this, a Wind chill Advisory is in effect for the central and southern part of the valley from 1 AM to 8 AM. Expect lows to drop elsewhere over high country generally into the single digits and between 0 and -10F. Tomorrow... As the major shortwave trough upstream continues to advance towards the region, strong brute forcing with tightened isoheights will produce very strong and gusty winds over the central mountains and mainly over the Sawatch Range, which will likely exceed High Wind Warning criteria. As snow continues to increase and it is occasionally heavy at times, especially on the western facing slopes, the fresh powder with very high winds will cause blowing snow with whiteout conditions at times. Travel will be very tricky for the high mountain passes of the ContDvd. These winds will also mix down to the surface across the San Luis Valley and plains by later in the morning, with winds increasing throughout the day and becoming very strong and gusty across these areas, and especially for the areas. The downsloping winds will allow for some compression and adiabatic warming to occur, so it will be relatively more mild over areas of the plains along the I-25 corridor and within the lower Arkansas River Valley compared to the rest of the plains where the west- northwesterly winds are not as prevalent (along the Kansas border and far southeastern plains). Winds will also be approaching High Wind Warning criteria, and could even be occasionally exceeded over the highest locations of the Sangre de Cristos, although there is not a vast enough coverage of area over a length of time to warrant a HWW for these areas at this time. Expect highs where the downsloping winds are in place to reach up into the upper 30s and possibly 40 degrees, whereas the rest of the plains will likely remain in the low 30s. Issued at 248 PM MST Thu Jan 11 2024 For the plains/I-25 corridor, arctic cold front arrives early Saturday morning, with cold air banking up against the eastern mountains through the day as boundary drops south into NM. Expect steady to slowly falling temps Sat afternoon as upslope deepens and clouds develop, with readings in the single digits along and east of I-25 by sunset. Had to undercut blended NBM guidance a large (nearly 20f) amount along I-25, going close to more reasonable statistical guidance. Cold then settles in along and east of the mountains Sat night into Sun, though clouds will keep mins in the single digits below zero, versus 10 to 20 below readings possible if skies were clear. On Sun, again undercut NBM by 5-15 degf, keeping most areas in the single digits through the day. Clouds again keep mins up somewhat Sun night, but bitter cold persists Mon as reinforcing push of cold air sloshes south. Skies begin to clear Mon night, leading to perhaps the coldest night of this Arctic outbreak, though weak lee trough and some downslope may keep areas along/west of I-25 from completely tanking. Slow warming trend then from Tue into the middle of the week. Regarding snow east of the mountains, cold air mass/upslope will generate periods of flurries/light snow Sat/Sun, with perhaps a brief period of steadier snow Sun as upper wave moves across. Better dynamic lift possible on Mon as short wave trough dives into nrn CO, which may lead to more widespread light snow, with some light (maybe 1-3 inches) accumulations. Mainly dry weather then expected Tue/Wed. For the mountains, snow and wind continue along the Continental Divide Friday night into Saturday, with northwest flow favoring the central mountains from Monarch Pass northward. Elsewhere over the remaining high terrain and interior valleys, mainly breezy conditions with occasional snow showers and high mountain blowing snow, especially at/above pass level. Brief break in snow Sat evening, before snowfall ramps back up along the Divide from early Sun morning and continues for much of the day. Additional accumulations of 3 to 8 inches can be expected across the eastern San Juan mountains and southern Sangre De Cristo mountains with 1 to 3 inches possible across the remainder of the mountains. Light accumulations of up to 2 inches will be possible along the southern I-25 corridor south of Pueblo through this evening. Wind chills as cold as 25 below zero will be possible again late tonight through early Friday morning across the San Luis Valley. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday Strong winds and moderate to heavy snow will impact the central mountains Friday and Saturday. Another round of heavier snow will be possible Saturday night and Sunday for the same area. Strong northwest winds gusting in excess of 60 mph will cause extensive blowing and drifting snow, particularly on Friday making travel dangerous for the higher elevations and lower east facing slopes of Chaffee and Lake counties. Gusts to near 75 mph will be possible in localized areas of the eastern Sawatch range on Friday. It will be windy Friday for the remainder of the mountains and adjacent plains. Gusts up to 65 mph will be possible across the higher elevations, with gusts to around 50 mph possible across the adjacent lower elevations. Additional snow will spread into the remainder of the mountains Friday through Sunday night with some light to moderate accumulations possible across the higher areas. Light snow will be possible across portions of the southeast plains on Sunday but accumulations should remain under an inch. Arctic cold will spread into eastern Colorado Friday night and Saturday with dangerous wind chills possible across the southeast plains beginning Saturday night and continuing through Tuesday morning. Wind chills as cold as 30 below zero will be possible during the overnight and early morning hours. Temperatures may struggle to warm out of the single digits both Sunday and Monday across the plains with wind chills of around 0 across the lower elevations. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
