Went ahead and upgraded the Fire Weather Watch for portions of
the plains tomorrow to a Red Flag Warning. It certainly looks
like those areas that are prone to strong gap winds will hit
critical fire weather conditions. Added Fremont County, Fire
Weather Zone 222, to the highlight since latest fuels info
suggests fuels there, especially along the valley floor, will be

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Currently..

Satellite imagery depicts mostly dry air over our forecast area,
with a wave moving well to our south across New Mexico and Texas.
Some mid and upper-level clouds and gusty winds associated with this
feature are beginning to effect our far southern plains. Springfield
and Trinidad are both gusting around 25 mph out of the south this
hour, which is helping to keep their temperatures in the mid 30s so
far. Mostly seeing calm winds elsewhere this morning, with
temperatures in the 20s across the rest of our plains.

Today and Tonight..

Models continue to drag a wave south of our border today, bringing
it into the TX/OK panhandle region by this afternoon. This will keep
gusty southerly winds over our southeastern plains through the rest
of this afternoon, though relative humidity values are expected to
be high enough over Baca and eastern Las Animas counties (where
winds will be gusty) that we likely won't see any critical fire
weather conditions there this afternoon. As westerly flow increases
elsewhere, gap flow winds could lead to brief and very spotty
critical fire weather conditions over western Pueblo county and
Huerfano county later this afternoon. Downsloping winds will also
help us to warm to around 5 to 10 degrees above normal for daytime
highs under mostly sunny skies, with temperatures climbing well into
60s over much of our plains, and 50s for mountain valleys. Westerly
flow continues to increase overnight ahead of our next approaching
system, which will likely lead to 30-40mph wind gusts over our
central mountains, and very warm overnight lows for the banana belt
region.

Strong winds and high fire danger still look good across the
Plains over the weekend. The main forecast change is a slowing
of the upper system and the arrival of a cold front Sunday
evening, which will have impacts on how widespread the fire
weather conditions will be. Beyond Sunday, a high degree of
uncertainty exists between the wet GFS and the dry ECMWF.

Friday through Sunday...a broad longwave trough across the
western conus will shift east slowly through Sunday. The main
model trend has been a slowing of the upper feature by about 12
hours, with snow holding off a bit longer along the Continental
Divide, and more widespread fire weather concerns on Sunday.

Hoisted a Fire Weather Watch for Friday afternoon along much of
the I-25 corridor due to expected gusty winds and low humidity
values. Gap prone areas will be most susceptible to gusty winds
and very low humidity values. Temperatures on Friday will warm
nicely, with 60s and 70s across the Plains, and 50s over the San
Luis Valley. Given the slower timing of the upper system, kept
Friday and Friday night dry along the Continental Divide.

By Saturday, the upper jet will begin to spread across the
region, with strong, gusty winds spreading across the Plains.
Humidity values will be low, and have issued a Fire Weather
Watch due to the low humidity values and increasingly strong
winds for all our Plains. Areas of blowing dust may also be
possible, as winds gust in excess of 45 mph through the
afternoon. Isolated to scattered snow showers will move into the
Continental Divide by the afternoon, with minor accumulations
by sunset. Temperatures will remain warm across the region with
60s and 70s for highs.

Winds will continue to increase Saturday night into Sunday.
Ridgetop winds could be quite strong overnight, with gusts in
excess of 60 mph likely. We will continue to monitor the need
for high wind highlights as we near Saturday night. Winds will
likely remain breezy on the Plains overnight as well. Humidity
values look to recover into the 20 to 30 percent range, but
there could be a few areas that see Red Flag conditions through
the overnight hours. This will also need to be monitored. Snow
will increase along the Continental Divide Saturday night, with
periods of heavy snow by morning, especially for westerly
upslope areas.

The strongest winds look to occur on Sunday, as the main trough
axis swings by to the north. Models have delayed the arrival of
a surface cold front until Sunday night. This means that
damaging winds and high fire danger will be likely across all of
the Plains from Sunday morning through the afternoon. If the
front arrives a bit earlier, it may limit our northern zones
fire weather concerns, but at this time, the front arrival looks
after 8 PM. This frontal timing is subject to change. Ahead of
this front, very strong winds are expected from Sunday morning
through the front arrival. Gusts in excess of 60 mph are not out
of the question. Humidity values will be under 10 percent with
dangerous fire weather conditions. Snow will continue along the
Continental Divide.

The upper trough will eject northeast into the northern Plains
Sunday evening sending a cold front south across the Plains.
Westerly flow will turn northerly, with winds weakening behind
the front. Given the more northerly storm track, any
precipitation looks to remain confined to the Palmer Divide
Sunday night into Monday morning. Snow will come to an end along
the Continental Divide Sunday night. Overall, snowfall
accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are likely along the
Continental Divide with locally higher amounts on west facing
slopes. There could be a brief dusting of snow for areas over
the Palmer Divide.

Monday through Thursday...models a bit all over the place with
the pattern into next week. The GFS develops a couple of
shortwave troughs that progress across the region along with
more persistent upslope flow on the Plains. This would lead to
precipitation chances for the Plains early next week. The ECMWF
keeps persistent southwesterly flow across the region, with
periods of light snowfall along the Continental Divide, but dry
conditions on the Plains. The NBM guidance is similar to the
ECMWF, with drier conditions on the Plains. But the NBM
guidance does have low pops for mid week on the Plains. Overall,
temperatures look steady, with 40s and 50s early next week.

Strong winds and high fire danger will spread across the region
beginning Friday, and increasing in coverage and intensity
through Sunday afternoon. Fire Weather Watches are in place for
the Interstate 25 corridor on Friday, and across all of the Plains
for Saturday due to gusty winds and low humidity values. Damaging
wind gusts will be possible on Sunday, with gusts in excess of 60
mph. Extreme fire weather conditions are expected on Sunday
across the Plains.

Snow will spread into the Continental Divide Saturday afternoon
and continue through Sunday night. Snow accumulations of 6 to 10
inches are possible along the Continental Divide, with locally
higher amounts possible on west facing slopes. A light dusting of
snow may be possible by Monday morning over the Palmer Divide.

Periods of light snow will continue along the Continental Divide
early next week.
