.KEY MESSAGES...

- Critical Fire Weather conditions are expected for most plains
  locations from as early as 10 AM this morning until around 8
 PM this evening.

- Snow begins later tonight over the Continental Divide, where a
  Winter Storm Watch goes into effect at midnight, with snow
  continuing through Tuesday evening.

- Very strong winds are forecast from Monday into Tuesday for
  much of the region, producing areas of blowing dust and
  elevated fire weather conditions.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Issued at 341 AM MST Sun Feb 25 2024

Currently..

Water vapor imagery depicts very dry air over the region, with a
ridge axis west of Colorado early this morning. Westerly flow
continues to increase as we remain in the northern periphery of the
ridge, and the subtropical jet strengthens overhead. Some locations
have continued to see critical meteorological fire weather
conditions through the overnight hours, especially through portions
of eastern Fremont and western Pueblo counties. As of 230 AM,
Fremont County Airport is still seeing 33mph wind gusts with a 12%
relative humidity. Many other locations are still seeing relative
humidity values in the single digits this hour as well, especially
across El Paso County. Poor overnight humidity recovery and
strengthening winds will set the stage for an early start to
critical fire weather conditions this morning.

Today..

Models continue to advance the ridge axis eastward throughout the
day today, passing overhead by around 5 PM or so this evening.
Increasing westerly flow aloft will keep dry and windy conditions
over the forecast area today, especially over our mountain adjacent
plains. Relative humidity values are expected to fall into the
single digits across much of our plains this afternoon. With poor
overnight recovery, expecting critical fire weather conditions to
get going early, by around 9 or 10 AM this morning, especially for
El Paso County. Continued west winds overnight will likely keep
relative humidities lower than forecast as well. For this reason,
timing for today's Red Flag Warning has been extended on both ends,
with a new start time of 10 AM and a new end time of 8 PM tonight.
It is also important to note that critical meteorological fire
weather conditions will likely be met in some zones that do not have
a Red Flag Warning in effect due to non-critical fuels. This is
especially true of zone 222 (Fremont County), where we are still
seeing critical meteorological fire weather conditions as of 3 AM
this morning. Winds in excess of 35 mph and relative humidities in
the single digits are expected over Fremont County today. Please
avoid all activities that could start a fire!

Outside of gusty winds and extremely dry conditions, today's
temperatures are expected to warm into the upper 60s and low 70s on
our plains, with 50s over mountain valleys and 40s over the higher
terrain. Mostly clear skies are expected for most of the day, with
increasing cloud cover from southwest to northeast through the
evening and overnight hours.

Tonight..

Once the ridge axis passes to our east later tonight, moisture
begins to increase over the high country ahead of a developing upper-
low that models begin to bring into the northern Rockies by Monday
morning. This will bring snow chances back to the Continental Divide
by around midnight tonight, when a Winter Storm Watch will go into
effect over the eastern San Juans and western slopes of our central
mountains. Overnight accumulations should be fairly light, with our
highest peaks seeing around 3 or so inches of new snow accumulation
by early Monday morning, however, gusty winds could lead to blowing
snow and dangerous travel conditions Sunday night, especially over
mountain passes. Overnight lows will be unseasonably warm given
continued gusty winds and mixing over the region. Many of our plains
locations will only cool into the mid to upper 30s, which is about
15 to 20 degrees warmer than normal for overnight lows this time of
year.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Issued at 341 AM MST Sun Feb 25 2024

The main concern for the extended period will be the first
portion, with very strong winds spreading across southern
Colorado and chances for snow on Tuesday. Dry conditions look to
prevail from Wednesday into next weekend along with a return to
mild temperatures.

Monday into Tuesday...a potent upper trough is forecast to
slowly traverse Colorado for the first part of the work week.
The main concern will be the strong winds associated with the
upper system.

Winter weather in the Mountains...snow, heavy at times will be
ongoing Monday morning along the Continental Divide, and will
prevail through Tuesday evening. Strong westerly flow and
favorable orographics will likely lead to areas over the Central
Mountains and San Juan Range seeing 1 to near 3 feet of
snowfall. Very strong winds will lead to widespread blowing and
drifting of snow, and very hazardous travel conditions,
especially over mountain passes. Those with travel plans Monday
into Tuesday should be prepared for extremely cold wind chills,
heavy snow and poor visibilities. For the lower slopes of the
Continental Divide and the upper Arkansas River Valley, along
with the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains, will likely see in
excess of 5 to 10 inches of wind driven snow.

Fire weather and winds...continued the Fire Weather Watch for
Monday across the Plains. Widespread winds on Monday will gust
in the 40 to 50 mph range, with a few gusts nearing 60 mph.
These very strong winds, combined with relative humidity values
under 15 percent will generate extremely dangerous fire weather
conditions. Any outdoor burning activities should be postponed
until another day. On Tuesday as the upper trough begins to move
across Colorado, widespread high winds are likely, especially
for areas south of Highway 50. Gusts may approach 70 mph.
Humidity values on Tuesday look to recover a bit, mainly falling
into the upper teens above 15 percent. Have a feeling model
guidance is likely too high dewpoint temperatures and we will
see relative humidity values lower than what is currently
forecast given the downslope and mixing. If this is the case,
extremely dangerous fire weather conditions will again be
possible on Tuesday for the Plains, and we will continue to
monitor this. Another concern with these winds will be the
potential for blowing dust. The San Luis Valley has seen blowing
dust in recent days with winds around 40 mph, and with winds
expected to exceed this, blowing dust looks likely. On the
Plains, drying due to windy conditions should be enough to
produce areas of blowing dust. Dust will produce areas of poor
visibility and hazardous travel conditions. Strong cross winds
on north-south highways, including I-25 are expected.

A very strong cold front will drop south across the Palmer
Divide by Tuesday afternoon, and shift south across the Plains
Tuesday evening. Models in good agreement advecting cold air
across the Plains behind the front, with snow developing as the
front drops south. The temperature drop will be quite dramatic,
with temperatures falling quickly from the 60s into the 20s.
Initial rain will quickly change to snow, and flash freeze
conditions may be possible on areas roadways, especially over
Monument Hill. Further south, a quick shot of snow may produce
an inch or two of accumulation. This snow will end by Wednesday
morning.

Wednesday into Sunday...once this upper system shift east on
Wednesday, zonal westerly flow will spread across southern
Colorado. Temperatures will remain cool on Wednesday, with highs
mainly in the 40s across the Plains. Temperatures will rebound
back into the 60s and 70s for late week into next weekend.
Overall, dry conditions are forecast through Friday, with a few
snow showers possible along the Continental Divide by next

VFR conditions are near certain next 24 hours at all 3 taf
sites, KPUB, KALS and KCOS.

Winds today will be gusty from the west at 15 to 30 knts at
times. Winds will decrease this evening but still likely remain
from a westerly component. LOW LEVEL WIND SHEAR will be likely
at KCOS this evening through tonight as strong winds aloft push
over the region. The wind direction at KCOS will likely be
quite variable at times and some gusts will be possible.

BY tomorrow, we will mix out relatively quickly and winds will
become gusty be mid to late morning.

HEADS UP For TUESDAY - VERY STRONG WINDS will occur across ALL
of the TAF sites from late MON nite through Tuesday. An INTENSE
cold front will blast across the taf sites sometimes during the
day Tuesday, Prior to FROPA, strong west winds will occur, after
FROPA, strong northerlies will occur.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions are expected across our plains
today. Westerly winds gusting to 40 mph and relative humidity values
falling into the single digits are likely. Please avoid activities
that could start a fire!

Snow begins over the Continental Divide around midnight tonight,
when a Winter Storm Watch will go into effect for the central
mountains and the San Juans. Overnight accumulations should be
fairly light, with our highest peaks seeing around 3 or so inches of
new snow accumulation by early Monday morning. However, gusty winds
could lead to blowing snow and dangerous travel conditions Sunday
night, especially over mountain passes.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Periods of heavy, wind driven snow will impact the Continental
Divide Monday into Tuesday evening. Snow accumulations of 10 to 30
inches may be possible. Winds gusting in excess of 80 mph will
produce widespread blowing snow over the mountains with extremely
hazardous travel conditions and poor visibility. For lower
elevations of the upper Arkansas River Valley, the Sangre de
Cristo and Wet Mountains, 5 to 10 inches are likely, with locally
higher amounts possible.

Extremely dangerous fire weather conditions are forecast Monday
across the Plains with winds gusting in excess of 50 mph and low
humidity values. Those with outdoor burning activities planned
should postpone them until another day. Very gusty winds on
Tuesday and marginal humidity values will need to be monitored.

Very strong winds Monday and Tuesday are forecast across the
Plains. Gusts may approach 70 mph on Tuesday. Areas of blowing
dust are likely across the San Luis Valley and Plains both Monday
and Tuesday. Hazardous travel due to poor visibilities and strong
cross winds on north-south highways, including Interstate 25 are
expected.

A strong cold front will drop south across the Plains Tuesday
afternoon and evening. A band of snow will likely produce a quick
inch or two of snow as it moves south across the Plains.
Temperatures will quickly fall and a flash freeze may be possible,
especially for areas over Monument Hill. Snow should come to an
end by Wednesday morning.
