Issued at 502 AM MST Sat Feb 24 2024 Generally quiet across the area this forecast period, with dry weather and well above normal temperatures well into the 50s and 60s expected across much of southern Colorado today. The ongoing deep westerlies are anticipated to persist and even strengthen during the day today, with substantial warming supporting these higher temps. Would not be surprised to see some 70 degree temps over the far eastern plains. With this westerly flow and deep mixing, will see dewpoints really fall today and especially this afternoon. Did lower dewpoints today, with widespread single digit dew points likely over much of the area. This will support widespread critical RH values, with values falling to just below 10 percent for most locations. The strongest winds today will generally stay confined to the higher terrain and just lee of the mountains for a time this afternoon. Issued at 502 AM MST Sat Feb 24 2024 Sunday-Tuesday...Westerly flow remains progged to increase across the region Sunday and Monday, as a strong southern stream jet stream translates out ahead of a northern stream system digging across the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West through the day Monday. Slowly increasing moisture ahead of this system will lead to light snow developing across the higher terrain along and west of the Continental Divide late Sunday night. Flow aloft becomes more southwest later Monday and Tuesday, ahead of the much colder weather system which remains progged to translate across the Rockies on Tuesday. This will continue to spread good moisture and snowfall into the higher terrain of the Continental Divide through this period. This, combined with the windy conditions, will lead to hazardous travel across the higher terrain of the ContDvd through the period, and will likely see winter weather highlights being issued across the Continental Divide for this period. Breezy westerly winds of 20 to 40 mph over the higher terrain looks to spread further east through the day Sunday, which will help boost temperatures to well above seasonal levels in the mid 60s to mid 70s across the plains, with highs in 40s and 50s continuing across the higher terrain. With dry air in place, expecting critical fire weather conditions across the I-25 Corridor into western portions of the southeast Plains Sunday afternoon. The current Fire Weather Watch across the I-25 Corridor into Crowley and Otero counties still looks good, however, have added Northern El Paso county (FW Zone 226) into the watch. Latest NBM data remains very bullish on strong westerly winds developing across the region Monday which continues through the day Tuesday. With progged H7 winds of 40-60kts and good mixing, could see winds of 50 to 70 mph across across the region on Monday and Monday night, though it remains too early for any potential high wind highlights. The westerly downslope will again help boost temperatures into the 60s and 70s across the plains on Monday, and will likely lead to critical fire weather conditions once again across the plains. Latest models are indicating some differences in the timing of the system and its associated strong cold front moving across the Rockies, leading to differences in temperatures and winds across southeast Colorado on Tuesday. The latest EC solution is the fastest with the strong cold front pushing across the southeast Plains Tuesday morning, as compared to Tuesday afternoon with the GFS and Canadian solutions. This will have impacts on wind direction and strength on Tuesday, as well as temperatures and precipitation across southeast Colorado. Either way, the passing system and cold front will bring a quick shot of rain quickly changing to snow to the eastern mountains, with some travel impacts possible Tuesday and Tuesday night, as much colder air and gusty northerly winds filter into the region.
