.KEY MESSAGES...

- Critical fire weather conditions will ramp up later this week
  through the weekend for the plains. Friday will have the most
  widespread conditions.

- Snow will begin late Friday over the higher terrain and
  increase through Sunday. Southwestern mountains will likely
  receive the most. The plains will remain mostly dry, with only
  a few showers possible along the I-25 corridor.

- Snow will return to the plains early next week, with
  significant amounts possible, especially along the southern
  I-25 corridor. More snow will also occur for the mountains,
  mainly over the southern mountains.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Upper ridge axis translates in over the next 24 hours bringing
warmer temperatures and lighter winds to the region.  North winds 15
to 25 mph will still be a factor across the plains as we mix
stronger winds to the surface by afternoon.  But this will only help
with mixing, warming temperatures 5 to 10 degrees over those of
yesterday especially over the plains.  With the elevated winds over
the plains, there could be some spotty brief near critical fire
weather conditions but given the limited coverage/duration, no fire
weather highlights look necessary.

Winds will decouple this evening under mostly clear skies. Weak lee
troughing will result in light drainage winds overnight which should
keep low temperatures on the warmer side. Clear skies and light
winds across the valleys will make these areas the coldest spots
with lows in the 20s.  -KT

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Thursday...

A strong ridge will be in place with 500 mb heights of over 570dm
over Colorado. This will allow for very warm temperatures and above
the seasonal average. There will also be some increasing winds out
of the southeast over the plains and southwest over the high
terrain. However, winds will not be strong enough to warrant
widespread critical fire weather conditions, only some spotty near
critical conditions over portions of the plains and San Luis Valley.
Highs will top out in the mid 70s to around 80F for the plains, and
generally in the 60s for the San Luis Valley and upper Arkansas
River Valley. It will max out in the 30s and 40s across the highest
elevations, and 50s for the high mountain valleys.

Friday through Sunday...

The ridge will continue to advance eastward with a deepening
longwave trough upstream over the western states. This trough will
continue to propagate towards the region going into Friday, which
will cause winds to continue to increase and become rather strong
and gusty ahead of it with the tightening of the pressure gradient.
With very dry air already in place, in combination with the strong
winds, there will be widespread fire weather conditions across the
plains and there is already a Fire Weather Watch issued as a result
for all of the plains. In addition, even though the RH values will
be right around the threshold or slightly above, winds will be
strong enough over the San Luis Valley and because of this I made
the decision to add this fire weather zone to the Fire Weather
Watch. Clouds will be increasing and snow will begin over the higher
terrain by later in the day on Friday as there will be southwesterly
flow with mid-level moisture advection. Due to this, the
southwestern mountains will likely receive the high snowfall total
amounts throughout the duration of this first system moving though.
Adiabatically downsloping winds will also help to warm up the lower
elevations quite a bit and high temperatures will be well above the
seasonal average for this time of year, with highs likely getting
into the low to mid 80s within the lower Arkansas River Valley.
Given the orientation of the winds with a "rain-shadowing" effect,
the plains will remain mostly dry, with perhaps only a few rain
showers moving over into portions of the I-25 corridor.

The drier conditions over the plains will continue into Saturday,
with the strong and gusty winds still in place and minimum RH values
hovering right around the threshold by the afternoon on Saturday.
This will give way to the threat of more fire weather conditions,
although not as widespread. Snow will continue to expand eastward
over all of the higher terrain throughout the day on Saturday, and
there will be colder air advection occurring as the trough begins to
move overhead and therefore high temperatures will be notably
cooler. Snow will continue, especially over the central mountains as
the position of the associated upper level low moves more to the
northeast and over the northern half of the state. Deterministic
models have became more aligned with the location of the low os it
moves over into the plains by later in the day, and not place it
right near the CO/WY/NE tri-state point. There will be some
instability moving over with this system as PVA occurs, and
therefore some of these snow showers could have some thunder
associated with them. Because of the position of the low, the plains
will likely get dry-slotted, and it does appear that the dryline
will remain off to the east of the CWA, over Kansas. If this does
back to the west a little more, there could be some convection
developing over the far eastern plains, right along the CO/KS border
by later in the afternoon. The more likely outcome is that the
majority of the plains will remain dry, even going into Sunday.

On Sunday, there will still be strong and gusty winds over the
plains with continued dry conditions, and thus fire weather concerns
will be an issue yet again over a large portion of the plains.
Temperatures will still be on the cooler side with northwesterly
winds over the plains. As the trough exits the region, snow showers
over the higher terrain will begin to dissipate by later in the
evening.  High pressure will subsequently build back in and clearing
will occur overnight going into Monday morning.

Monday through Tuesday...

High pressure conditions will dominate temporarily for most of the
day on Monday, however, there will be increasing clouds as a
secondary major shortwave trough embedded within the longwave trough
still overhead begins to advance towards the region but remaining to
the south over New Mexico. It is will quite a ways out in the
forecast period to have much certainty with this system, but it is
at least appearing at this time with the deterministic models that
this could end up being an impactful system for the plains given the
position of the low being to the south over New Mexico and therefore
some good upslope enhancement with significant amounts possible for
some locations. Areas likely to be most impacted will be over the
southern mountains and plains, and especially along the southern I-
25 corridor. There will need to be further evaluation of this system
in the days to come to determine continuity and reliability with the
models, but at least at this time there is growing confidence that
Tuesday will be rather unsettled with impacts felt across portions
of southeast Colorado.    -Stewey

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Spotty near critical fire weather conditions will be possible over
portions of the plains and the San Luis Valley during the
afternoon on Thursday. Critical fire weather conditions will
become widespread on Friday over the plains and within the San
Luis Valley. There could also be critical fire weather conditions
again for both Saturday and Sunday during the afternoon over
portions of the plains.

Snow showers will begin over the Continental Divide, especially
over the eastern San Juan Mountains, by later in the day on Friday
and then expand across the rest of the high terrain from Saturday
through Sunday. There could be a few of these showers moving over
the adjacent plains. Heaviest snowfall totals expected through
Sunday will be over the southwestern mountains. Some thunder will
be possible.

On Tuesday, an impactful low may cause significant amounts of snow
over the southern mountains and southeast plains, and especially
along the southern portion of the I-25 corridor. Snow could also
impact travel over the central mountains, Pikes Peak Region, and
Palmer Divide area.
