.KEY MESSAGES...

- Critical fire weather conditions will ramp up beginning Friday
  and last through the weekend for the plains. Friday will have
  the most widespread conditions.

- High wind criteria may occur along portions of the I-25
  corridor from the morning through the early evening on
  Saturday, and possibly for Teller and El Paso County late
  evening on Saturday through early Sunday morning.

- Snow will begin late Friday over the higher terrain and
  increase through Sunday. Southwestern mountains will likely
  receive the most. The plains will remain mostly dry, with only
  a few showers along the I-25 corridor. Thunder will be
  possible, especially Saturday morning over the Palmer Divide.

- Snow will return to portions of the plains Tuesday through
  Wednesday, with significant amounts possible, especially along
  the southern I-25 corridor. More snow will also occur for the
  mountains from Monday afternoon through Wednesday, mainly
  over the southern mountains.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

One more quiet day expected today with winds on the increase as the
upper ridge shifts eastward in response to the approaching west
coast low. Expect a few more degrees of warming today as H7
temperatures warm to between +5 to +8C degrees.  Southerly winds
will increase, especially over the higher terrain, but for now
soundings suggest wind gusts should stay below critical fire weather
thresholds on the whole.  There could be some spotty near critical
fire weather conditions across the San Luis Valley and portions of
the I-25 corridor late this afternoon as winds aloft increase, but
duration and coverage appears too spotty/brief for fire weather
highlights.

Winds will increase in earnest tonight across the high country as
the upper low moves into the western U.S.  Still looks like a dry
pattern with south to southeasterly low level jet pushing into the
far southeast plains.  Could see some brief stratus across the
eastern counties towards dawn with a weak signal as far west as
eastern portions of El Paso County.  This may be a bit too
optimistic as far as western extent but will monitor this with
future model runs. Otherwise, it will be a warm night as lee
troughing and increasing winds keep the atmosphere a little more
mixed.  Low temperatures may stay in the upper 30s to mid 40s across
the plains.  Valley locations, where winds are more likely to
decouple, could see temperatures dipping into the mid-upper 20s
for lows closer to dawn. -KT

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Friday through Sunday...

The ridge will continue to advance eastward with a deepening
longwave trough upstream over the western states. This trough will
continue to propagate towards the region going into Friday, which
will cause winds to increase and become rather strong and gusty
ahead of it with the tightening of the pressure gradient. With very
dry air already in place, in combination with the strong winds,
there will be widespread fire weather conditions across the plains.
For this reason there is a Red Flag Warning (RFW) in effect. RH
values will be right around the threshold or slightly above within
the San Luis Valley, although winds will be very strong (possibly
reaching High Wind criteria periodically for some locations) and
therefore this area is also included in the RFW. The other wind
component that has been considered is a possible High Wind Watch for
the areas along the I-25 corridor from Pueblo down to the NW border
(mainly between 12Z on Saturday and 03Z on Sunday, due to brute
forcing along with the potential for deep mixing on the backside of
the low after frontal passage as winds will be howling around 60 kts
out of the WNW at the 700 mb level. The pressure gradient looks
promising in the deterministic models, yet soundings are not nearly
as impressive within the vertical wind profile. Regardless, it will
be very windy and areas of blowing dust will be possible for both
the San Luis Valley and the plains. Moreover, given that this is
still a little ways out in the forecast with the uncertainty at this
time, and also being that there is still some time to better analyze
this, the decision to go with a watch was held off for now but may
be necessary in the shortcoming.

Clouds will be on the increase and snow will begin over the higher
terrain by later in the day on Friday with strong southwesterly flow
and mid-level moisture advection. Due to this, the southwestern
mountains will likely receive the high snowfall total amounts
throughout the duration of this first system moving though.
Adiabatically downsloping winds will also help to warm up the lower
elevations quite a bit and high temperatures will be well above the
seasonal average for this time of year, with highs likely getting
into the low to mid 80s within the lower Arkansas River Valley on
Friday. Given the orientation of the winds with a "rain-shadowing"
effect, the plains and San Luis Valley will remain mostly dry, with
perhaps only a few rain showers moving over into portions of the I-
25 corridor by late in the evening. As the associated upper level
low propagates overhead going into the morning on Saturday, an area
of positive vorticity advection (PVA) will be moving over the Pikes
Peak Region and Palmer Divide, which will increase instability and
may spark off some early morning convection and there could be
graupel and/or small hail, or a mix with snow, along with some
thunder.

The drier conditions over the plains will continue into Saturday,
with the strong and gusty winds still in place and minimum RH values
hovering right around the threshold by the afternoon on Saturday and
the very strong winds which may reach High Wind criteria as
aforementioned. This will give way to the threat of more fire
weather conditions. Snow will continue to expand eastward over all
of the higher terrain throughout the day on Saturday, and there will
be colder air advection occurring as the trough begins to move
overhead and therefore high temperatures will be notably cooler.
Blowing snow will continue over the higher terrain, especially over
the central mountains as the position of the associated upper level
low moves more to the northeast and over the northern half of the
state. Deterministic models are much closer in agreement with the
position of the surface low as it moves over into the plains and
establishes itself over the NE corner of Colorado by the early part
of the afternoon on Saturday. This will keep the threat of
convection in place for portions of the plains, mainly north of
Highway 50, otherwise the plains will remain mostly dry. On the
backside of the low, from Saturday night through Sunday morning,
there will be some strong upper level winds which, if a mountain-top
subsidence inversion sets up with reverse shear, it may result in
near High Wind criteria along the front range. There is still more
time to analyze this before a decision is to be made about a
possible High Wind Watch needed for Teller/El Paso County in the
evening of Saturday though early Sunday morning.

On Sunday, there will still be continued strong and gusty winds over
the plains with the persistent dry conditions, and thus fire weather
concerns will be an issue yet again over a large portion of the
plains. Temperatures will still be on the cooler side with
northwesterly winds over the plains. A isolated shower and perhaps
even a thunderstorm will still be possible over the plains (mainly
over the Palmer Divide area), as there is the wrap-around moisture
moving over this area with the low centered to the NE of the CWA by
this time. As the trough exits the region, snow showers over the
higher terrain will begin to taper off throughout the afternoon.
Winds will also begin to decouple and weaken by later in the evening
as the pressure gradient finally loosens. High pressure will
subsequently build back in and clearing will occur overnight going
into Monday morning.

Monday through Wednesday...

High pressure conditions will only be temporary on Monday during the
morning, then there will be increasing clouds and snow beginning
back over the higher terrain by later in the afternoon as a
developing secondary U/L low embedded within the longwave trough
over the Great Basin drops down to the southwest of Colorado and
destabilizes the mid-levels with plenty of residual moisture already
in place. A few of these could move out over the adjacent valleys
and plains. Going into Tuesday...there is still some disagreement
with the propagation of this system, and models have been trending
for the low to move even further to the southeast into New Mexico
than previous runs. Despite that, it is still appearing to be some
possible impacts for the plains given the position of the low being
to the south over New Mexico and therefore some good upslope
enhancement. Areas that would be to be most impacted will be over
the southern mountains and plains, and especially along the southern
I-25 corridor. There still needs to be further evaluation of this
system in the days to come to determine continuity and reliability
with the models, but at least it still appears to be somewhat
unsettled for Tuesday over southeast Colorado. Chances of precip may
continue for Wednesday, depending on how quickly this system
propagates to the east.   -Stewey

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Brief near critical fire weather conditions will be possible late
this afternoon across the San Luis Valley and localized areas along
the I-25 corridor. Please take care to avoid fire starts.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Widespread critical fire weather conditions will spread across the
San Luis Valley and all of the southeast plains on Friday leading
to volatile conditions for fire spread as southerly winds increase
to around 50 mph and humidity values drop below 15 percent.

Snow will spread into the Continental Divide Friday night through
Saturday bringing accumulations of up to a foot of wind driven
snow to the higher peaks and passes. As the storm system moves
across northern Colorado on Saturday, a quick burst of snow will
be possible across the Sangre De Cristo range where 1 to 3 inches
will fall across the higher peaks. Otherwise, strong west winds
will spread across all of the region with the possibility for
gusts up to 60 mph along and south of highway 50. Another round of
high fire danger will spread across most of the southeast plains
Saturday.

Sunday will see less wind, but it could still be gusty enough for
critical fire weather conditions to return to portions of the
southeast plains.

Another storm system may bring a chance of rain and snow to
southern Colorado Monday night through Wednesday morning.
