.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 320 AM MST Sun Dec 29 2024

Currently...

Variable high cloudiness prevailed across the region early this
morning. It was rather mild over quite a bit of the region, with
U30/L40s over a good part of the plains. and valleys immediately
east of the Sangres. Where it was warm, the winds were keeping up
while areas where temps were in the 20s over the plains (Lamar/La
Junta/Eads region) winds were light. San Luis valley was cold, but
only in the tens and 20s. Mtns were generally in the 20s. Westerlies
were noted in the Valley floor in Chaffee county and temps were in
the U30s to L40s. Some snow showers were likely ongoing over the
central mtns north of Cottonwood Pass.

Next 24 hours...

Weather will be getting more active, especially the kinematics as a
strong jet pushes toward the region. Winds will be strong over the
mtns during this period, and will only be getting stronger,
especially later tonight. Periods of snow will continue north of
Cottonwood Pass through this morning, and will taper off late this
AM, but will once again be on the increase starting after midnight
and last into Monday. Winds of 30 to 50 mph this AM will taper off a
bit this afternoon, but will RAMP UP starting after midnight, and we
will likely see winds of 65 to 78 mph in the mtns towards sunrise
Monday. Strongest winds will be over the central mtns and push down
into the N Sangres. Additionally.

As for the plains, Not much in the way of strong winds today over
the plains (it will be a bit gusty in wind prone areas (Walsenburg,
Eastern Fremont) but not all that strong (20-30 mph). However later
tonight, especially after midnight, winds will be increasing ALL
areas, and wind gusts to 40 to 50 mph will be possible, especially
in the greater southeast I-25 corridor region. Gusts of 30 to 40 mph
will be possible over the rest of the plains and valleys.

Winter weather advisories are in effect this AM for the central
mtns, and another advisory has been issued for late tonight as the
strong jet impinges into the region.

Temps tonight will be very mild over the plains where the winds keep

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Issued at 320 AM MST Sun Dec 29 2024

Monday: The start of the work week will bring active and impactful
weather to south central and southeastern Colorado. A shortwave will
be quickly pushing over the region throughout the day. As this wave
passes, flow will rapidly strengthen as an associated jet streak
races over the area. With the strong flow, and therefore increased
forcing, snow showers will continue to blossom along the mountains,
though particularly along the central mountains where forcing will
be strongest. Outside of those snow showers, dry conditions are
expected for south central and southeastern Colorado. In addition,
strong winds will be a concern throughout Monday. With increased
flow from the passing wave, a tightening pressure gradient from a
deepening lee cyclone across the central plains, and diurnal mixing,
widespread strong winds are anticipated with 40-65 mph wind gusts
for the mountains and 35-55 mph wind gusts for the lower elevations.
With that all said, one area of growing concern is the Rampart
Mountains and El Paso County, where high-res model guidance have
started to signal stronger winds in this region enhanced by modest
mountain wave dynamics and an even tighter pressure gradient, with
wind gusts around 60-70 mph, and isolated higher gusts. The
strongest gusts are expected between the leeward side of the
Ramparts and I-25 corridor, though strong gusts spreading across
eastern El Paso County can not be ruled out. Given agreement and
support from high-res model guidance, confidence is medium (60%) in
this scenario for the Pikes Peak region, and given this, a High Wind
Watch has been issued for Monday morning into the afternoon. If
model guidance continues to support mountain wave dynamics and a
tight pressure gradient, and localized areas of stronger winds,
upgrades to High Wind Warnings may be needed. With that all said,
winds will steadily decrease during the afternoon and evening, as
the wave and its associated dynamics exit the region. Along with all
of that, critical fire weather conditions are expected for the
entirety of the eastern plains Monday. The strong winds, in
combination with dry air and humidity values around and less than
15%, will allow for widespread critical fire weather conditions to
materialize early in the day and last through the afternoon until
winds finally begin lessen. For this reason, a Red Flag Warning has
been issued for the eastern plains from Monday morning into the
afternoon. Beyond all of that, relatively clear skies and warm
temperatures are expected. Looking at temperatures, much of the
region will remain above seasonal values given downsloping winds.
With that said though, a cold front will push southward late in the
day, bringing cooler temperatures with it.

Tuesday - Saturday: For the rest of the long term period, some
unsettled weather is anticipated for portions of south central and
southeastern Colorado. Persistent northwest flow to low amplitude
ridging will be in place over the area. Along with that though,
multiple embedded shortwaves will drift over the region within the
broader flow throughout this period. With each wave passage, given
heightened support and forcing, precipitation chances will
increase, especially along the mountains where forcing will be
strongest and snow showers could be expected. Between these waves,
quieter and drier conditions will prevail. Otherwise, relatively
light winds and pockets of increased clouds with the wave passages
is anticipated. As for temperatures, a cool down to near and only
slightly above season values is expected thanks to the more
unsettled pattern in place.

high level clouds. Downslope effects off the Rampart Range will
likely produce a rotor effect overnight tonight with low level
wind shear in the forecast. Occasional gusts near 45 kts may be
possible late tonight before mixing pushes strong northwesterly
winds into the terminal by mid to late morning. Gusts may

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow and wind will increase by early afternoon across the central
mountains, and last through the night time hours. 3 to 6 inches of
wind driven snow are likely. The heaviest snow is expected to occur
generally north of Cottonwood Pass.  Winds will gusts to 40 to 50
mph across the central mountains thia afternoon and tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Another round of light to moderate snow is expected along the
mountains, especially the central mountains, through Monday. Strong
winds are expected to cause blowing snow and areas of reduced
visibility.

Strong winds are expected to develop along the mountains Monday with
wind gusts around 40-65 mph expected, with isolated higher gusts
possible. Gusty winds will spread across the lower elevations
Monday, with widespread 30-55 mph winds expected, and stronger gusts
to around 60-70 mph possible for the Pikes Peak region.

Critical fire weather conditions return Monday, especially across
the plains, as dry air and strong winds up to around 55 mph
overspread the area.

For Tuesday and beyond, multiple systems will influence the area,
bringing additional rounds of light to moderate snow for the
mountains, especially the central mountains.

be likely over portions of the region.
