.KEY MESSAGES...

- Snow for the mountains today and tonight with heaviest
  accumulations along the Continental Divide.

- High winds and fire danger for the southeast plains today.

- Lingering snow showers will continue over the higher terrain,
  mainly over the central mountains, tomorrow night through
  Wednesday morning.

- Pattern will begin to become more active later this weekend
  through mid part of next week, with a higher probability of
  precipitation.

- Temperatures will overall remain on the cooler side and near
  the seasonal average through the weekend, then be on a
  downward trend going into early next week as another storm
  impacts the region.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Upper trough across the western U.S. will eject the first lobe of
energy and its associated upper jet across southern CO today with
the best forcing lifting out across western and central CO.  Strong
winds will spread across eastward across the region this morning
through mid afternoon with confidence high enough now to issue a
high wind watch for our southern portions of the southeast plains.
Confidence is greatest for southern areas where the surface gradient
will be tightest and model soundings show 50 kts winds down to near
800 mb. Mixing could easily tap these stronger winds with gusts up
to 60 mph possible. Confidence gets lower farther north so have
cancelled the high wind watch for Kiowa county.  Highest
probabilities for gusts 58 mph or greater favors southern portions
of the next tier of counties northward. Have added Pueblo county
where NBM and HREF probabilities suggests high wind criteria gusts
around Colorado City and southern portions of the county may be .
easier to attain than farther east.  Do not think high wind gusts
will make it as far north as the city of Pueblo, but it will be very
windy none the less. With the wind, areas of blowing dust will be
possible across the plains.  Temperatures will be mild for one more
day with model blends looking on target.

With the strong winds wind, fire danger will remain high across the
plains as humidity levels drop to around 15-20 percent. Although
this is slightly shy of true Red Flag Criteria (under 15 percent
humidity), the very strong winds will be sufficient to enhance the
fire danger risk. Current Red Flag Warnings still look good.

Meanwhile, snow will continue along the Continental Divide today,
falling heaviest this morning when the best forcing moves through.
Lapse rates steepen this afternoon behind the front but moisture
also decreases quickly behind this first wave.  So, although
convective snow burst potential may linger into the early part of
the afternoon, the overall trend should be towards diminishing snow
shower coverage.  Front moves through the southeast plains during
the early to mid afternoon with winds shifting to more of a westerly
component and decreasing by this evening.  Secondary energy digging
into the Great Basin trough today will start to eject eastward
across CO late tonight. This will send another round snow showers
into the Continental Divide with greatest impacts and snowfall rates
across the central mountains.  Current advisories still look on
target with no further expansions necessary. The secondary cold
front will push into the Pikes Peak region by 12z with moisture and
snow showers increasing behind it as snow levels drop to around or a
little below 6000 feet towards dawn. -KT

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

Tuesday night through Saturday...

The major shortwave trough currently over the region will continue
to propagate east and out of the area, with an associated upper
level low over the Dakotas moving towards the northeast. There will
be some lingering snow showers due to this U/L low, mainly over the
higher terrain and highest probability over the central mountains,
through Wednesday morning. Winds will be rather strong and gusty out
of the north-northeast over the plains during the overnight hours.
High pressure will begin to build in behind it, with clearing skies
and diminishing winds at the surface as the pressure gradient
loosens. Nights will be much colder, with frost and freeze
conditions likely for much of the plains, especially on
Wednesday night/early Thursday morning.

Weak ridging will continue to move in over the region through
the end of the work week, with overall westerly-southwesterly
flow remaining in place in the mid to upper levels.
Southwesterly winds will also be increasing over the plains on
Friday, which may allow for some spotty critical fire weather
conditions during the afternoon hours. This will also allow for
a slight warmup going into the later part of the week, although
temperatures will stay on the cooler side overall, and dry
conditions will persist for most areas through Saturday. An
embedded wave with some upper-level diffluence moving in over
northern Texas may allow for some showers and storms to be
possible over the far eastern and southeastern plains on
Saturday by later in the afternoon.

Sunday through Tuesday...

Another major shortwave trough over the northwest CONUS will
continue to progress closer to the region this weekend and allow for
increasing clouds, moisture (mainly over higher terrain), and
southwesterly winds beginning on Sunday. How much precipitation
southeastern Colorado will receive from this is still questionable,
being that it is still far out in the forecast period and there
could be changes in the path of this low. For now, deterministic
models seem to be in relatively good agreement with the longwave
trough deepening over the western states and then an U/L low
developing over the southwestern CONUS on Sunday, with a slow
progression thereafter towards the Four Corners area going into
early next week and then filling as it propagates towards the
northeast and is absorbed into the longwave ridge upstream. As
ensembles suggest, unsettled conditions with an overall downward
trend in temperatures, is expected going into the mid part of next

Winds will increase at all three terminals with wind shear possible
at times early this morning prior to winds aloft mixing down to the
surface. KALS should remain steady and gusty from the southwest with
winds at KCOS and KPUB kicking up by 16z.  Gusts to around 35 to 45
kts will be possible at all three terminals.  Otherwise, conditions
will remain VFR with some passing showers possible near KALS this
morning.  Southwest winds will taper down this evening with mostly
clear skies expected overnight.  A cold front will push through KCOS
towards 12z bringing gusts to around 30kts and lowering VFR to high
end MVFR cigs as snow showers move into the Palmer Divide.  KPUB and

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions will be widespread across the
eastern plains this afternoon, due to winds gusting around 30 mph
and relative humidities below 15 percent. These conditions will last
through late afternoon, with a Red Flag Warning in effect through
6pm.

Moderate to heavy snowfall will move into the San Juans, La Garitas,
and Eastern Sawatch Range late tonight into early Tuesday morning.
Snowfall will be intense at times, with areas of blowing snow
reducing visibility and resulting in dangerous travel conditions.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Heavy snow will continue through early afternoon along the
Continental Divide. While snowfall diminishes across the eastern
San Juans and La Garita mountains through the afternoon, another
round of snow will spread into the Continental Divide and Pikes
Peak region Tuesday night into Wednesday. Snowfall totals of 6 to
12 inches will be possible across the Continental Divide, with
local amounts of up to 14 inches across the Eastern San Juan
mountains. The crest of the northern Sangre De Cristo mountains
could see up to up 4 inches with up to 3 inches possible for the
Pikes Peak region. A dusting to up to an inch of snow will be
possible across portions of the Palmer Divide Wednesday morning,
mainly on grassy surfaces.

Strong winds will spread across all of southern Colorado on
Tuesday with gusts up to 50 to 60 mph possible across the
southeast plains late Tuesday morning through the afternoon. Areas
of blowing dust could reduce visibility to a mile or less at
times. Critical fire weather conditions will be possible across
all of the southeast plains on Tuesday as humidities drop below 20
percent leading to dangerous conditions for fire spread.

Cold temperatures Wednesday night will bring a widespread hard
freeze for the southeast plains Wednesday night into Thursday
morning as temperatures drop into the 20s to around 30 degrees.
Take time now to drain and protect vulnerable irrigation systems
and pipes before the freezing temperatures occur.
