.SYNOPSIS...
Well-below normal high temperatures with freezing and subfreezing
low temperatures will persist across the Desert Southwest through
the remainder of this week. Another quick moving storm system will
dive south across the Great Basin late Wednesday into Thursday,
bringing windy conditions to western portions of the region and
rain/snow chances to southcentral AZ. Cold air will follow in the
wake of this system on Friday morning, resulting in more widespread
freezing temperatures.

.DISCUSSION...
Latest mid-lvl wv analysis reveals high amplitude ridging over
the eastern Pacific with longwave troughing extending across much
of the Lower 48. Northwesterly flow aloft prevails over the Desert
Southwest and this pattern is expected to remain in place for the
next several days, keeping temperatures well below seasonal norms.

This morning will begin with clear skies and light winds resulting
in low temperatures falling into the upper 20s to lower 30s
across much of the forecast area. A Freeze/Hard Freeze Warning
remains in effect until 9 AM MST this morning for the Imperial
Valley, southwest AZ, and southcentral AZ. Skies will remain clear
through this afternoon, however anomalously low hghts aloft will
not offer much potential for warming today with highs again
topping out well below normal in the mid 50s across the lower
deserts. Another night of mostly clear skies, light winds, and a
dry boundary layer will result in freezing to sub-freezing
temperatures across much of the region. Therefore, we have opted
to re-issue Freeze Warning/Hard Freeze warnings from late tonight
into Wednesday morning. On Wednesday, upper level winds will
transition from northwesterly to quasi-zonal ahead of a deepening
trough over the Pacific NW. Increasing westerly flow aloft over
the Desert Southwest as well as more pronounced southwesterly sfc
winds, should allow temperatures to rise by a few degrees into the
upper 50s to lower 60s across the area Wednesday afternoon.

Deterministic models and ensemble blends are now in better
agreement regarding the track of the afomentioned shortwave
trough on Thursday. This system will continue to dig southward
across the Great Basin region on Thursday morning accompanied by a
robust 80-100 kt 500 mb jet which will overspread the western
half of the forecast area between 12Z-18Z. At the sfc, a Pacific
cold front will sweep across the region, resulting in the arrival
of much cooler air. A strengthening thermal gradient and rapid
pressure rises in the wake of the cold front will result in strong
northerly winds across the western half of the region with gusts
as high as 40-45 mph possible across much of southwestern AZ and
southeast CA on Thursday afternoon.

In addition to the strong winds, ample lift and adequate moisture
associated with the positively tilted trough will bring increasing
rain chances to the deserts of south-central AZ and potential
accumulating snowfall to the higher terrain areas above 4000 ft.
This system will be fast moving similar to the one on Saturday, so
any precipitation will be short-lived and accumulations should
remain light. Latest NBM QPF values are general less than 0.10"
over the central deserts around Phoenix and up to 0.40” of liquid
equivalent over the highest terrain in Gila County. Snowfall
amounts are currently forecast to range from 2-5" above 4000 ft in
the mountains of E Maricopa and S Gila Counties including the
Mazatzals and Pinal/Superstitions. Stay tuned for updates on
precipitation chances and QPF amounts as these are subject to
change.

After the storm system exits the region late Thursday, very cold air
will filter into the Desert Southwest on Friday. There looks to be
another widespread freeze/hard freeze event Friday morning and
additional freeze products will likely be needed. Below normal
temperatures will continue through this weekend, although there is
expected to be a slow warming trend as high temperatures rebound
back to the low to mid 60s by Sunday and into early next week.

South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT:
No aviation weather concerns are expected through the TAF period
under passing high cirrus. Winds will follow their typical diurnal
tendencies, with sustained speeds generally aob 6 kts. Periods of
very light and variable winds are possible, particularly preceding
direction switches. High clouds will remain aoa 20 kft, becoming
SCT at times this evening before clearing the region very early
tomorrow morning.

Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:
No aviation weather concerns are expected through the TAF period.
Light and variable winds with speeds aob 5 kts will be common
through the period. FEW-SCT high clouds will pass over the area
this afternoon and evening, remaining aoa 20 kft.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Well below normal temperatures will persist through this weekend
with near freezing to sub freezing temperatures possible each
morning across the lower desert elevations and sheltered valleys.
Minimum humidity will range from 15-20% across southeast CA and
around 25-40% across most of southcentral AZ over the next several
days. Another quick moving weather system will arrive on Thursday,
bringing gusty winds to the western deserts, especially in southeast
California and southwest Arizona where gusts could reach 40-45
mph. Precipitation chances will increase Thursday morning with
light rain possible over the lower deserts and potential accumulating
snowfall in the higher terrain, mainly above 4000 ft.
