.SYNOPSIS...
A weather disturbance moving into the region will result in locally
windy conditions across southeast California this evening, then
again on Friday spreading east into Arizona. By Friday evening,
scattered light shower activity will be possible over the Arizona
high country. Much cooler temperatures will spread into the area
through the weekend, however should quickly warm back near or above
the seasonal normal into the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION...
A strong negative PV anomaly continues to progress south along the
California coast with objective analysis indicating 60-90m H5 height
falls advancing inland ahead of this system. Models remain in
excellent agreement pivoting the central cold core and primary
vorticity center eastward into the Great Basin over the next 48
hours as jet energy translates to the eastern portion of the
synoptic trough axis. For the local forecast area, this will result
in only a portion of the trough and forcing mechanisms skirting the
area while incorporating only meager moisture intrusion. Thus with a
cold front making landfall this afternoon and deepening the windward
marine layer juxtaposed with strengthening H8-H5 winds perpendicular
to the coast range, strong gusty downsloping winds through much of
SE California will be the greatest weather impact.
Observational data already shows the first vestiges of stronger winds
descending into lower elevations of Imperial County early this
afternoon, and further strengthening will be common through the
evening hours with many locations, including the El Centro area
reaching advisory criteria. While gusts may prevail through the
overnight adjacent to terrain features, most population centers will
partially decouple with the strongest gusts relaxing. However,
renewed mixing Friday afternoon should once again tap the higher
momentum topping mountains to the west, and have extended a portion
of the ongoing advisory. Another area of concern is higher terrain
locations of eastern Gila County in Arizona where pre-frontal
pressure packing in the H8-H7 layer will promote a limited afternoon
temporal period of strong, gusty winds justifying a separate
advisory.
Otherwise, the incoming trough will carry very little attendant
moisture with minimal additional advection such that mixing ratios
become capped at 5 g/kg and total column PWATs only reaches near
0.50" Friday afternoon. While a decent saturated H8-H7 layer will
accompany fropa, this boundary will be poorly aligned/timed with
cooling aloft and vorticity forced ascent lagging substantially. As
such, HREF output generally suggests virga/light showers for most
lower elevation communities and only a limited opportunity for
measurable rainfall. However, this scenario could support locally
enhanced wind gusts via evaporational cooling in shallow inverted-v
thermal profiles. Regardless, better forced orographic ascent east
of the Phoenix metro should result in better precipitation chances
along and behind the front Friday evening. Based on forecast
thermodynamic profiles and historical precedent, have edged higher
POPs into foothill areas tightening the gradient across the metro.
As the trough base migrates into the forecast area Friday night,
snow levels will also crash to 4000-4500' level, albeit well behind
the surface cold front and moisture axis. Thus, little more than a
dusting to 2" accumulations would be expected in far eastern Gila
County before pronounced dry air and subsidence surge into the
region.
Although a period of flat ridging will build into the SW Conus over
the weekend, H5 heights will be dampened in a 562-568dm range
keeping temperatures below normal. In fact, chilly morning
temperatures in the mid 30s may be common for some rural valley and
outlying suburbs. Mean longwave troughing will continue over the
Great Basin through early next week such that models are in very
good agreement that another deepening shortwave dives into forecast
area Monday reinforcing the cooler airmass while introducing renewed
ascent. Given the overland trajectory, moisture will be even more
limited than the weekend and only some showers over mountain areas
would be the result. However, this pattern is notorious for
producing outflow generated winds which usually are not captured by
required forecast initializations.
Beyond early next week, ensemble guidance heavily favors an
expansive ridge developing across the western Conus with the main
uncertainties being the haste at which heights build over the
forecast area, and the eventual magnitude of the high pressure
center. The preponderance of ensemble output indicates H5 heights
reaching near 579dm likely resulting in a strong warming trend
during the latter half of next week. Numerical guidance spread is
quite narrow for a 7 day forecast suggesting high temperatures
almost certainly exceeding 90F across the majority of the lower
desert communities later next week.

.AVIATION...Updated at 1809Z.
South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT:
An upper low centered off the coast of northern CA has a front
moving through northern and central CA. Ahead of the front, a
southerly component to the surface wind is expected to be prevalent
until mid to late afternoon. Speeds will increase during the
afternoon as well but gusts are anticipated to remain below 25kts.
The front is anticipated to track across the Greater Phoenix area in
the 12Z-15Z Friday time frame. However, this system will have much
less moisture than the previous rain-making system. Thus, anticipate
only SCT cumulus initially followed by the development of ceilings
after 15Z (mainly 16Z - 21Z). Anticipate the bases to be in the
range of 6-8kft ASL. However, these could dip as low as 4-6kft ASL
(mainly between 17Z-20Z). Shower activity is expected to be spotty
and thus the probability of -SHRA at any given TAF site is too low
to reflect in the TAF. Better chances, though still less than 30%,
are anticipated Friday evening. In addition to the ceilings, the
frontal passage will lead to a resumption of gustiness with even
stronger gusts Friday afternoon.
Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:
An upper low centered off the coast of northern CA has a front
moving through northern and central CA. As the system approaches,
westerly winds are expected to strengthen this afternoon over the
Imperial Valley (S/SWly at KBLH). Speeds peak this evening with
gusts to 35kts common at KIPL and occasionally to 40kts (about 10kts
less overall at KBLH). With the strongest gusts, anticipate reduced
visibilities in blowing dust with the heaviest dust area in the
vicinity being over northern portions of the Valley. Winds will
weaken overnight before restrengthening in the late morning and
afternoon Friday. The system will have limited moisture and thus,
cloud cover will be limited to cirrus today and scattered cumulus
Friday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
After another warm and dry day today, a mostly dry weather system
will drop temperatures to well below normal for Friday and into the
weekend. With MinRHs between 15-20% today, winds will become breezy
areawide by the afternoon with gusts mainly between 20-25 mph.
Across southeast California, expect locally windy conditions lasting
into tonight with gusts as highs as 35-45 mph. Breezy to windy
conditions will again impact the area on Friday with the strongest
gusts to around 40 mph across the Arizona high terrain and across
Imperial Co. MinRHs will improve starting Friday, dipping to between
20-30% before lowing back into the teens over the weekend. There
will also be a 20-30% chance of wetting rains across the Arizona
high terrain late Friday and Friday night. Fairly tranquil weather
conditions will settle over the region this weekend into early next
week with temperatures remaining below normal, but expect another
period of breezy to locally windy conditions Sunday into Monday.
