.SYNOPSIS...
Strong front will push onshore early today, with morning rain, then
breezy with showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two. Next front
arrives later Monday, with another round of rain. Showers return for
Tuesday into Wednesday. Then, high pressure builds across the region,
bringing warmer temperatures and dry weather for later this week into
the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...(Today through Friday)...NOAA satellite imagery showing
rather broad circulation around the upper low offshore. The front
with this system is just moving onshore as of 3 am, with rain inland.
Behind the front, showers and a few thunderstorms extend from the
coast back offshore. Rainfall not all that impressive with this
frontal boundary, with a half to one inch along Coast into the Coast
Range and Willapa Hills, and 0.25 to 0.50 inch inland.
But, main story with this front is the wind. Breezy south winds
across the interior, with gusts 30 to 45 mph. But, stronger winds
along the coast as well as the higher terrain of the Coast Range and
Willapa Hills, where winds have been gusting 50 to 60 mph in the more
exposed locations. Winds will remains gusty until the front passes,
then ease quickly. As of 3 am, the front was very near the coast.
Winds along the coast have eased a bit, enough to end the High Wind
Warning for that area. The Wind Warning for the higher Coast Range
and Willapa Hills as well as the Wind Advisory for the interior still
on track. But, will likely lower them towards 5 am as the front
shifts farther inland and moves towards the Cascades.
With the upper low offshore, and embedded disturbances in the flow
rotating around the low (next one was about 300 miles west of Newport
at 3 am), will maintain rather showery pattern today. Instability is
enough that will maintain a small chance of a few thunderstorms along
the coast this morning, and farther inland for late morning into
early this evening. Pressure gradients remain tight enough to support
gusty south to southwest winds today, with gusts 30 to 40 mph along
the coast and over the higher terrain, while gusts 25 to 40 mph at
times for the interior lowlands.
Snow will continue to fall across the Cascades, with another 5 to 12
inches of snow likely through tonight. Will maintain current Winter
Weather Advisories for south Washington Cascades (above 3500 ft) and
for the north Oregon Cascades as far south as Santiam Pass (above
4000/4500 ft).
Break between systems later tonight into Monday, with a let up in
showers. But, next front will be fast approaching on Monday. That
front will be similar to the front this am, though perhaps not as
potent. Still, will be breezy again, with rain increasing Monday
afternoon. Then, rain transitions to showers Monday night as the cold
front moves inland. Will get more snow across the Cascades above 3000
ft, with another 6 to 12 inches of snow likely. Will need another
Winter Weather Advisory for the Cascades for Monday through Tuesday.
Will wait for current advisory to end before issuing next.
Showers gradually ending on Wednesday, as high pressure begins to
build. It is that high pressure that will bring a change to more
spring-like weather for later this week. As get into Thu and Fri,
that high pressure ridge will sit over the region, with axis just
offshore. That is a favorable for offshore flow, or easterly flow. As
such, will see warmer temperatures, with 60s expected Thu and Fri
from lowlands along the coast and inland valleys. Across the
Willamette Valley, there is a 30-40% chance of reaching for 70 deg on
Fri, but better chance of such on Sat. On average, the first 70 deg
of the year occurs in early April across the interior. With that
warmer weather, will see the snow across the lower elevations (below
2000 ft) gradually melting. Rivers will be on the rise, but no
flooding is expected. /Rockey

.AVIATION...Radar imagery and terminal observations as of 18z Sun
show a mix of low-end VFR and high-end MVFR cigs with post-frontal
showers. Expect this trend to continue through the evening with a 15-
20% chance of thunderstorms along the coast and within the
Willamette Valley until 06z Mon. Heavier showers and thunderstorms
could briefly reduce vis/cigs to IFR/MVFR and result in some small
hail and lightning. Winds today will be mostly southerly and
southwesterly with gusts up to around 25-30 kt at any given
terminal. Between 06-12z Mon, showers decrease with more
predominately VFR cigs. Guidance suggests a 20-40% chance of MVFR
cigs during this timeframe along the coast and Willamette Valley.
After 12-15z Mon, the next approaching front will return widespread
rain and begin lowering cigs to MVFR at the coast.
*Note: The observations out of KONP are generally limited to wind
and pressure at this time. Periodically cloud cover, vis, and
present wx are reported but are unreliable.
PDX AND APPROACHES...Expect a mix of high-end MVFR and low-end VFR
cigs today with post-frontal showers. There is also a 15-20% chance
of thunderstorms through this evening. Any heavy showers or
thunderstorms may briefly reduce cigs/vis to IFR/MVFR. Small hail
and/or lightning is also possible with thunderstorms. Winds will be
south-southwesterly with gusts to 20-25 kt through this evening.

.MARINE...Strong front has just moved onshore along the Oregon
Coast as of 3 AM PDT Sunday morning. Largely wind-driven seas of
up to 25 ft were observed along and just ahead of the front, but
these seas should settle to 14-18 ft as winds decrease and swells
rise behind the front. The longer period nature of the swell will
decrease the wave steepness, but 14-18 ft seas at 12-14 sec is
still dangerously steep - just not as steep as the seas were
earlier in the night.
With W-SW winds 35-45 kt persisting just a couple thousand feet
above the surface and cold air aloft, the stage will be set for
squally showers to persist through Sunday afternoon. Some of these
will be strong with lightning, small hail, and outflow gusts of 35
to 45 kt. There appears to be enough of these showers to keep the
Gale Force gusts fairly frequent; therefore we opted to go with a
Gale Warning today for all waters. Even during lulls between
showers, seas 14-18 ft will keep conditions hazardous on the
waters today. Winds associated with stronger showers may briefly
push seas to 20 ft today.
The next strong frontal system is just now beginning to take shape
south of the Aleutian Islands. Latest guidance shows a strong
chance of gales and even a 30-50% chance of Storm Force gusts
again in the coastal waters Monday afternoon and evening. This
system will likely push seas back into the low 20s (feet) as a
strong wind wave component couples with the swell energy
continuing to affect the waters at that time. We decided to handle
this system with a Gale Watch for all waters midday Monday through
Monday evening.
Conditions will gradually ease beginning Tuesday as strong high
pressure builds over the region for the remainder of the week.

Washington coast around late morning to early afternoon Sunday.
Minor flooding, up to one foot above ground level during high
tides is expected in low lying areas near bays, sloughs, and the
lower reaches of the coastal rivers. The Toke Point gauge is
expected to reach 11.3 ft at high tide 2 PM PDT Sunday. Tidal
observations from today (Saturday) matched our forecast, so we
expect tomorrow's Coastal Flood Advisory for the south Washington
