.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds in behind an arctic cold front for tonight
and Monday. Coastal low pressure looks to bring some wintry
weather to the region Monday night through Tuesday. Arctic high
pressure builds in Tuesday night and holds influence over the
region for Wednesday and Thursday. Another coastal low pressure
system may impact the region Thursday night through Friday
night. Arctic high pressure then builds in again for the
weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 12:45AM...No notable changes to the near term forecast at
this time. The main forecast update for later this morning is
ongoing. Previous discussion remains below...
Winds have diminished significantly as expected this
evening, though likely still remain 10 to 15 mph for much of
the night. With the strong cold air advection, lows tonight are
expected to range from around 10 degrees in the southern Poconos
to mid 20s in Delmarva and South Jersey. The combination of the
wind and temperatures will result in wind chills in the single
digits and teens. Higher terrain of the southern Poconos and NW
Jersey should even have wind chill values below zero. While high
pressure will center itself over the area tonight, clouds will
increase from the south overnight. This will limit any strong
radiational cooling despite dewpoints in the single digits.
For Monday, the coldest (arctic) airmass so far this season
will be anchored across the area with 850 mb temperatures
ranging from -5C to -15C from south to north. This will keep
high temperatures mainly from near 30 degrees to the mid 30s.
Fortunately, winds won't be much of a factor, remaining from the
west to southwest near 5-10 mph. Skies will remain mostly cloudy
though, so it will be a rather cold day.
Some guidance indicates some light snow from the next system
beginning to fall across portions of Delmarva and Cape May into
the afternoon, however any precipitation will likely struggle to
reach the ground early on given the extremely dry, artic
airmass in place. So long story short, perhaps some flurries at
best during the daytime Monday with the main show holding off
until the evening and overnight hours.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The Philadelphia snow drought appears to be near its end.
Relatively weak high pressure will be starting to give way to a
developing wave of low pressure along the stationary boundary to
our south Monday evening, with warm advection/isentropic lift
and frontogenesis already causing some light snow to break out
across the Delmarva and southern New Jersey. This light snow
will then overspread areas further north overnight. With
relatively modest forcing overall, expect rates to remain
relatively low, but widespread 1 to 2 inches of accumulation
looks reasonable by late Monday night across much of the area.
Temperatures will be mostly in the 20s through the night.
Tuesday, surface low strengthens as it passes northeastward off
the coast to our south. Some question remains about how close
the surface low passes, as some guidance sends a warm layer into
coastal areas which may change the immediate coast to rain
while possibly bringing some freezing rain to the I-95 corridor
Tuesday morning into midday. Further northwest, frontogenesis
and divergence aloft from the approaching upper level shortwave
likely leads to continued light but steady snowfall across the
Lehigh Valley and Poconos. Expect highest totals in these areas,
with locally more than 4 inches possible. Accumulations appear
to dwindle further southeast due to potential for dry slotting
and mixing, so have 2-3 down to I- 95 and 1-2 across most of the
coastal plain. It should be stressed that some uncertainty
remains regarding exact placement of forcing features, and
changes would affect snowfall totals. Highs along the coast may
reach the low-mid 40s thanks to onshore flow, while I-95
northwestward will stay near or below freezing, with 20s in the
Poconos.
System passes eastward out to sea Tuesday night with lingering
precip rapidly moving away. Much colder air mass builds in
behind the system with lows dropping into the teens for most of
the area, with single digits in the Poconos. Winds from the
northwest behind the system, while not particularly strong,
will be strong enough to push wind chills into the single
digits, with sub- zero in the Poconos.
Wednesday, arctic high pressure will build to our southwest.
This will promote mostly sunny skies, but the coldest air mass
we've seen since last winter, with highs for most of the area
staying in the 20s, near freezing along the immediate coast.
Poconos will stay in the teens. Wind chills will get no higher
than the teens for most, while staying sub zero most of the day
in the Poconos, thanks to westerly winds of 10-20 mph.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure passes to our south on Wednesday night and
Thursday. Westerly downslope flow should promote some modest
warm advection, allowing Wednesday night to see a little
moderation in temps compared to Tuesday night, but still below
normal. Highs Thursday will bounce back into the 30s for most,
closer to normal, but still slightly below. However, this will
be tempered by increased cloud cover as the next complex system
approaches from the west and southwest.
Thursday night through Friday night presents a lot of
uncertainty, but a decent chance exists for another widespread
snowfall, possibly relatively significant (compared to recent
history, anyway). Several pieces of upper level energy rotating
around the broad trough centered over eastern Canada attempt to
phase, with a surface low developing off the coast and an
inverted trough extending northwestward toward our region. Most
guidance keeps the surface low pretty far off the coast, which
means we'd end up relying on forcing from the upper level system
and possibly some surface convergence with the inverted trough
to help generate snow over our region. This type of scenario,
while not implausible, is often poorly modeled this far in
advance, so uncertainty remains very high, despite most models
currently leaning in the direction of some snow. One thing which
appears a little more certain is that, given a relatively cold
air mass available, odds of it being at least partly if not
entirely snow for most if not all of our region look fairly
good, though the warm ocean could still play a little havoc with
our immediate coastal areas. As implied, most areas likely stay
below freezing through the storm, but the immediate coast could
poke up closer to 40 on Friday.
An even colder air mass looks to move into the region behind
this system for Saturday, with highs again in the 20s, but
perhaps a few degrees colder than Wednesday. In addition, strong
winds behind the departing storm could keep wind chills in the
single digits or below near and northwest of the I-95 corridor
all day long. Lows will likely be deep into the teens Saturday
night as well.
Sunday, the next high pressure is slowly building eastward into
the region, so we should have a little moderation and dry
conditions.

.HYDROLOGY...
Multiple river forecast points on the Passaic River remain in
flood stage. Water levels at all points have crested and are
falling but currently remain at moderate flood stage. Please
refer to the latest Flood Warnings for more information, and
have a multiple ways to receive any further flood warnings that
come out. Do not attempt to drive through any flooded roadways.
What does MINOR, MODERATE and MAJOR mean?
MINOR FLOODING: Minimal to no property damage, but some public
threat can be expected (e.g. inundation of roads).
MODERATE FLOODING: Some inundation of structures and roads near
streams/rivers are expected. Evacuations of people and/or the
transfer of property to higher elevations can be anticipated.
MAJOR FLOODING: Extensive inundation of structures and roads.
Evacuations of people are on a larger scale. The transfer of
property to higher elevations is needed.
