.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the midwest early this afternoon will build
across our region through tonight. The high will pass offshore
Friday keeping a cold and dry airmass in place. A coastal system
passing just south of the area will bring widespread
precipitation to the region Saturday through Saturday night. The
coastal system will move to the east of our region Sunday
morning, followed by high pressure and seasonable conditions
later Sunday into Monday. A much stronger system system will
bring rain and strong winds to the region Tuesday through
Wednesday as low pressure passes across the southern Great Lakes
and toward New England.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A mid level trough is moving over the region this afternoon. Any
precipitation is expected to end by 19Z as a cold front crosses
the area and ushers in a drier airmass and clearing skies. Northwest
winds will pick up in the wake of the front as well, likely gusting
up to 30 mph at times especially along the coast.

High pressure over the midwest builds across the region
tonight and moves offshore on Friday. The positioning of the
high will help to usher in a cold Canadian airmass. Lows tonight
will drop into the mid teens to mid 20s. A NW breeze around
5-10 mph with a few gusts up to 15 mph will result in wind chill
values in the teens and low 20s tonight for much of the region
with single digits across the Poconos. Temperatures on Friday
will peak in the 30s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Summary: After a quiet and seasonable Friday, a coastal system
is forecast to impact the region beginning Saturday, peaking
Saturday night, then departing the area on Sunday. Widespread
precipitation is forecast, including wintry precipitation mainly
northwest of I- 95. Details follow below.

Synoptic Overview: A closed mid-level low across the southern
Plains will open into a shortwave trough and deamplify as it
eject northeastward. It is forecast to cross our region Saturday
night. By Sunday morning, a sub-tropical jet will be centered
across the Southeast, placing the northern-most areas of the
forecast area and southern New England in the left exit region
of the jet as it shifts eastward and eventually offshore. At the
surface, A broad surface high will shift offshore and weaken on
Friday. Its initially cold and dry airmass will begin to modify
as thicknesses and heights rise and low level flow turns
southwest ahead of the approaching trough. By Saturday morning,
less than impressive cyclogenesis will be ongoing with the
surface low lifting quickly northeastward from the Carolinas.
The latest trend in the 00Z guidance is for this low to take a
more northerly track, keeping it closer to our coast as it lifts
north Saturday night. Furthermore, the greatest diffluence
aloft will likely continue to support a northerly trend with the
surface low (unless a significant shift in the placement of the
jet streak forecast occurs), which would result in a warmer
solution. An arctic airmass associated with a high will be
located well to our north across southeast Canada, and our area
will not be able to tap into its airmass. The surface low will
push eastward south of New England on Sunday.

Coastal System Forecast and Impacts...

Timing: Precipitation will begin to spread into the area from
southwest to northeast beginning Saturday afternoon and likely
reaching a peak in intensity and coverage Saturday evening. The
precipitation will begin to taper off overnight, however some
guidance has some light precipitation lingering into Sunday
morning. Anything that lingers into the daytime Sunday in
unlikely to amount to much, so we've maintained chance PoPs at
most for Sunday.

Snow and Wintry Precipitation: With a continued consensus of a
more northerly track of the surface low, the potential for
significant impacts from snow and wintry precipitation continue
to lessen. The coastal low's orientation to our coast and lack
of rapid intensification will mean an easterly surface flow will
prevail through the first half of the event. Thus, the marine
layer coming off of a 47-50 degree ocean will advect
temperatures above freezing well inland into the I-95 corridor
and perhaps eventually even further west toward the I-78
corridor. Additionally, the latest deterministic guidance puts
the 850 mb low centered somewhere over the southern half of the
forecast area, perhaps even as far north as the Philly metro
area. The result is the 850 mb 0C isotherm surging into the
I-78 corridor sometime Saturday evening or overnight. So long
story short, a change to sleet or rain appears more probable now
all the way into the I-78 corridor and the Lehigh Valley. This
will reduce snowfall totals and impacts for much of southeastern
Pennsylvania and central New Jersey. Farther north into the
I-80 corridor and north, precipitation is likely to remain
mainly snow for the duration of the event, and snowfall totals
and impacts will likely be greatest there, albeit with poor snow
ratios.

The resulting snowfall forecast is for little to no snowfall
accumulation near the immediate I-95 corridor and southeast
across the coastal plain, although precipitation may initially
begin as wet snow that is not able to accumulate. Between the
I-95 and I-78 corridors, we have roughly 1-4" of snow in the
initial forecast. North of I-78, we have included amounts of
4-6". A Winter Storm Watch was considered for Carbon, Monroe,
and Sussex (NJ) Counties, however given the marginal nature of
reaching warning criteria and lower confidence of this occurring
(less than 50%), we will allow the day shift to make another
assessment as to whether any watches will be needed. Please note
that a further northwest trend in the surface low in the
guidance will result in a reduced snowfall forecast, so continue
to monitor for updates.

Rain: Along and southeast of the I-95 corridor, the rainfall
forecast holds steady around 0.5-1" with locally higher amounts
near 1.5" possible. The greatest amounts are most likely to
occur near the immediate coast where the onshore flow will
result in more surface convergence. The latest 3 and 6 hour
flash flood guidance is solidly within the 2-3" range, so the
threat for flooding remains marginal at best. That said, cannot
rule out some minor flooding of low lying or poor drainage
areas.

Winds: Easterly winds will increase into Saturday afternoon and
evening to around 15-20 mph inland and to around 20-25 mph near
the immediate coast. Wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible
inland and up to 40 mph along the immediate coast. The winds
will shift northeast then north overnight and begin to diminish
and shift northwest by Sunday morning. No significant impacts
are anticipated due to winds, however the soggy ground and gusty
winds may combine to result in a few downed trees or isolated
power outages near the coast.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A short period of quiet weather following the system from the
weekend. Dry weather is expected Sunday night and through Monday
night as high pressure builds in. Temperatures will be seasonable
with lows in the upper 20s/low 30s for Delmarva and metro Philly and
mid 20s N/W. Highs will be in the upper 30s/low 40s for the region.

A rather dramatic change in the upper pattern this weekend and next
week will likely lead to headline producing weather early next week.
The focus of this weather will be a strong low pressure system will
launch from the lower Mississippi Valley Tuesday morning and head
towards the Great Lakes into the midweek. The low is expected to
strengthen significantly with the central pressure heading below
980mb. possible. The low looks to cut west of our area with a strong
surge of mild and humid air expected for the region. Strong winds
and heavy rains look increasingly likely for the Tue./Tue. night
periods. Even this far out (in time) models are pegging moderate to
heavy rains for many areas. Hydro impacts, especially across
Northern NJ are probable. We'll have more information on that in the
next few days. Very mild Tue with highs in the 50s and some low 60s
for Delmarva possible. Dry weather returns following the system with
temperatures dropping back to normal levels by the end of next week.

We urge our partners and the public to remain aware of this
potentially impactful storm next week.  Details for this system
should become a bit more clear into this weekend.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This afternoon...VFR. Ceilings 5-6k ft will become FEW-SCT late
in the afternoon. W-NW winds 10-15 kt gusting up to 25 kt in
the afternoon following cold frontal passage.

Tonight...VFR. NW winds around 15 kt diminishing to around 5-10
kt.

Friday...VFR. Northwest winds 5 to 10 knots.

Outlook...

Friday night...VFR. Clouds increasing in coverage. Winds light
and variable. High confidence.

Saturday through Saturday night...Initially VFR, but ceilings
will lower to MVFR after 18Z then IFR after 00Z. Widespread
precipitation expected as a coastal system impacts the region
with MVFR to IFR visibility. MIV/ACY will experience mainly
rain. ILG/PHL/PNE/TTN may start or end as wet snow, but mainly
rain is anticipated for these terminals. RDG/ABE will experience
mainly snow, however precipitation may mix with rain or sleet
at times. Precipitation will reach a peak intensity between 18Z
and 06Z. East to northwest winds increasing to near 10-20 kts
shifting north and diminishing after 06Z. Gusts near 25-30 kts
possible. Low confidence on details, but high confidence in
occurrence of restrictions.

Sunday and Sunday night...MVFR and IFR conditions likely
lingering early, though there should be some gradual improvement
as the day progresses. Some light precipitation possibly
lingering through 18Z. Northwest winds 5-10 kts. Low confidence.

Monday and Monday night...Mainly VFR, though some restrictions
may develop at night. Northwest winds 5-10 kts shifting north to
northeast at night. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
SCA conditions will continue this afternoon as a cold front
moves off the coast. NW winds of 20-25 kt with gusts up to
30-35 kt expected with seas building to 4-6 feet this afternoon
and evening.

The Small Craft Advisory will continue overnight through 4AM
Friday for the Delaware Bay and through 7 AM Friday for all
ocean zones due to elevated winds and seas. NW winds will
gradually diminish overnight to 10-15 kt with gusts up to 20 kts
by early Friday morning. Seas will lag behind by a few hours,
but are expected to subside below advisory criteria by daybreak
Friday.

Friday...No marine headlines expected. Northwest to west wind
10 to 15 knots. Seas 2 to 3 feet.

Outlook...

west winds 10-15 kts. Seas 2-3 feet. Fair weather.

Saturday through Saturday night...Advisory conditions likely
with gale force winds probable across the Atlantic waters as a
coastal storm impacts the area. East to northeast winds
increasing to 20-30 kts with gusts near 35-40 kts possible. Seas
building to near 6-10 feet. Widesperad rain developing during
the afternoon and evening.

Sunday and Sunday night...Advisory conditions likely lingering
with seas 5-8 feet gradually diminishing into the night.
Northwest winds 15-20 kts with gusts up to 25 kts possible.

Monday and Monday night...Advisory conditions possible in the
morning with seas near 5 feet, otherwise improving conditions.
Northwest winds 10-15 kts shifting to the east overnight. Fair
weather.

.HYDROLOGY...
The potential for heavy precipitation returns this weekend with
a coastal system impacting the region Saturday through early
Sunday. Already saturated grounds from heavy rainfall during
previous storm systems will keep the region more sensitive to
flooding potential. As a result, the WPC has maintained a
Marginal Risk for the Day 3 (Saturday) Excessive Rainfall
Outlook. Current Flash Flood Guidance values remain near 1-3"
for the 3 and 6 hour windows. With total precipitation amounts
near 0.5-1", significant flooding is unlikely with the weekend
coastal system. However, some locally higher rainfall amounts
are possible that may result in some minor flooding of low lying
or poor drainage areas.

Looking ahead, a much stronger storm system has the potential
to bring another round of more widespread heavy rainfall to the
region with potential for flooding beginning Tuesday through
Wednesday of next week. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts
for updates on the Tuesday-Wednesday storm.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Coastal communities should closely monitor the forecast over
the next week as we will have multiple chances for coastal
flooding. The first chance will come with a coastal low that
will move offshore Saturday night, bringing steady onshore
flow. Current indications are that the Atlantic coasts of New
Jersey and Delaware and Delaware Bay will have the greatest
chance of experiencing minor coastal flooding with the Saturday
night/Sunday morning high tide.

A much stronger storm system will impact the region Tuesday
through Wednesday of next week. This will coincide with the
coming New Moon on Thursday, January 11th. This will likely
will result in further coastal flooding, potentially much more
significant and widespread than the weekend system. We will
continue to monitor and make updates as we get closer to each
event.
