.SYNOPSIS...
A potent cold front will impact the region today and tonight.
Surface high pressure builds in for Thursday and holds influence
over the region through Friday. Weak low pressure could keep
the region unsettled Friday night through at least Monday. A
cold front looks to approach the region Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
No significant changes with this update. A strong cold frontal
system will impact the region through tonight, bringing periods
of showers and windy conditions.
An amplified trough axis will pass from the Midwest early today
toward the East Coast tonight. At the surface, low pressure will
strengthen rapidly passing from the Great Lakes region early this
morning northeast into Quebec by this evening. An poorly defined warm
front will lift north of the area later this morning. A strong cold
front with a rather sharp thermal gradient will then sweep quickly
across the region this evening and will be offshore by 10 PM.
A secondary wave of showers with a couple of isolated thunderstorms
that produced some small hail will be lifting north of the area
early this morning. A third wave of showers with perhaps some
embedded thunderstorms will pass across the area later this morning
and early afternoon. Based on the latest observations and hi-res
guidance, this wave should impact areas mainly near and northwest of
I-95. However, some additional showers may develop farther southeast
across the coastal plain for a time. Far southern New Jersey and
Delmarva are the most likely areas to remain largely dry for much of
the daytime period, as the best forcing will be located mainly
northwest of I-95 throughout the day.
Aside from the showers and overcast skies, temperatures will remain
unseasonably warm today with highs this afternoon ranging from the
upper 50s to mid 60s across much of the area. This is about 15
degrees above normal.
South to southwest winds will strengthen today as the pressure
gradient tightens to around 15-25 mph by this afternoon. Gusts of 30-
40 mph are possible across the entire area during the day, though
likely won't prevail for any extended period well inland early in
the day. Areas that experience any clearing of showers will allow
for some meager boundary layer destabilization, which would allow
for better mixing of stronger wind gusts. The area most likely to
experience this will be across the lower coastal plains of Delmarva
and southern New Jersey, where some peak wind gusts near 45 mph are
possible this afternoon.
An increase in coverage an intensity of showers can be expected as
the cold front nears the area late this afternoon and evening.
Depending on exactly how much surface based instability can develop
by this afternoon, a shallow line of convection may develop along or
just ahead of the front. This line of showers with perhaps some
embedded thunder may be capable of mixing down some isolated wind
gusts up to 60 mph. But again, this will be conditional on the
instability and evolution of any line that develops.
PWats will be fairly impressive for this time of year, ranging from
around 1" to 1.5". Rainfall amounts will range from about a half to
one inch near and southeast of I-95 to an inch to an inch and a half
northwest of I-95. We are not anticipating any flooding concerns,
however some urban or poor drainage flooding is possible.
Aside from the FROPA convection potential, the frontal passage
itself will be accompanied by an abrupt wind shift and increase in
winds and strong cold advection and pressure rises begin. These will
be maximized within roughly the 3 hours following the frontal
passage. Pressure rises are forecast to be near 10 mb within just 3
hours, which is greater than 2 mb per hour. The cold advection will
drop 850 mb temperatures by about 15C within the same period.
Meanwhile, winds in the 925 mb layer will be near 40-50 kts. Long
story short, we are forecasting a few hours of windy conditions in
the wake of the front this evening. We should see fairly widespread
peak gusts around 40-50 mph across the entire area, generally from
about 6 PM to 10 PM. By midnight tonight, the strongest winds should
be winding down, however breezy conditions will persist overnight. We
have expanded the Wind Advisory to include the entire area for this
evening into tonight. The advisory begins earlier across portions of
the coastal plain to account for the potential strong winds
developing ahead of the front.
Temperatures will plummet behind the front tonight, dropping from
the 60s ahead of the front into the 30s by midnight or so. The
strong winds will dry out paved surfaces to prevent any flash freeze
concerns.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Much of the short term should be relatively quiet weather wise.
Surface high pressure will look to be centered to our west
Thursday morning and will gradually shift eastward with time.
This surface high pressure will look to shift offshore of the
eastern CONUS Thursday night and continue to fleet away to the
east for Friday. An upper-level trough may allow for a weak low
to develop over the southeastern CONUS or just offshore of it
later Friday into Friday night. As the overall pattern supports
this low then moving north/northeastwards with time, things
will look to become unsettled by the Friday night time frame.
Guidance does suggest some shortwave energy may propagate through
Thursday and Thursday night, but surface high pressure should
dominate and influence overall. Mostly clear skis and no PoP can be
anticipated for Thursday and Thursday night. Surface high pressure
will still hold influence over the region for Friday, expect no PoP
but cloud cover to build in with time. For Friday night, light
precipitation will approach from the south with time and bring some
chance PoPs to the region.
With high pressure fleeting away and warm air advection in
place, expect a nice warm up for Friday. High temperatures will
likely reach the upper 40s to low 50s for most locations across
the region Friday.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The ensembles and deterministic models indicate a rather unsettled,
but not too impactful pattern will be on tap for the long term. Weak
surface low pressure over or just offshore of the eastern CONUS
Saturday morning is forecast to continue moving to the northeast
with time. However, with time, most of guidance suggests the low
will slow and stall some, resulting in the weak low lingering just
offshore through at least the time frame of Monday. Guidance
suggests a cold front from the west will approach Tuesday, finally
kicking the weak lingering coastal low out by Tuesday night or
Wednesday perhaps.
Overall, with the pattern described above expect the long term
to be unsettled. With weak coastal low pressure offshore
Saturday and lingering possibly into Monday night/Tuesday,
expect mostly chance PoPs with mainly light rain on and off Saturday
through Monday night or Tuesday. Approaching cold front Tuesday
will also bring some chance PoPs to the region later Tuesday
into Tuesday night perhaps.
Temperatures will likely run above average through the duration of
the long term.

.AVIATION /12Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...
Today...Highly variable ceilings through out the day time
period. Most guidance continues to be too pessimistic with
flight categories, especially ceilings. Some TAFs have already
improved to VFR. Expect though that we will continue to see
brief periods of MVFR and even IFR as showers cross through the
region. There will be some dry periods, but the heaviest and
steadiest rain is likely between 18 and 00Z. Winds starting SW
at 10 to 20 kt, increasing to 15-20 kts with gusts of 25-35
kts. The low level just should be shifting east by 15 to 18Z.
That, combined with increasing surface winds should result in
diminishing LLWS, though some turbulence is still possible. A
strong cold front with accompanying wind shift will sweep across
the area from about 22Z to 02Z or so. Winds will abruptly shift
to the northwest and increase to 20-25 kts with gusts of 30-40
kts. Frontal passage will bring an end to any showers and
improve conditions to VFR. Moderate confidence on the overall
forecast evolution.
Tonight...VFR ceilings scattering out overnight. Northwest winds 20-
25 kts with gusts near 30-40 kts early. Winds will gradually
diminish by 06Z to near 15-20 kts with gusts 20-30 kts. High
confidence.

developing across the ocean waters. Seas 8-12 feet. For Delaware
Bay, wind gusts of 35-30 kts can be expected through much of the
daytime, perhaps locally stronger near the Delaware coast. A strong
cold front will push offshore this evening, bringing an abrupt wind
shift and increase from the northwest. Gale force wind gusts around
35- 40 kts can then be expected much of the night. Seas gradually
diminishing overnight.
Periods of showers persisting through about 10 PM or so tonight. The
showers may be accompanied by locally stronger winds and visibility
near 1-3 NM at times.
