* At 145 PM EDT, a dangerous snow squall was located near Arrowhead
Lake, or 8 miles northwest of Mount Pocono, moving southeast at 25
mph.
HAZARD...Intense bursts of heavy snow and gusty winds leading to
blowing snow and rapidly falling visibility. Wind gusts
greater than 35 mph.

IMPACT...Travel will become difficult and potentially dangerous

.SYNOPSIS...
Strengthening low pressure will continue to track to our northeast
today into tonight. High pressure builds to our west and south
Monday into Tuesday before shifting offshore into Wednesday. A weak
cold front may settle southward into our area Thursday, then a
stronger cold front and wave of low pressure arrive Friday into
Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1pm...Tracking some rain and snow showers/squalls to the
north and west which are gradually tracking southeastward with
time. Any shower/squall may cause a quick drop in visibility.
Otherwise, forecast remains on track and the previous discussion
is below:
A potent upper-level trough is forecast to slide across the
East today into tonight. This drives deepening surface low
pressure across eastern New England today, then closer to the
Canadian Maritimes by early Monday. Strong shortwave energy
dropping down across lower Michigan early this morning is
forecast to pivot across our area this afternoon and early
evening. Some lingering showers early this morning, then some
instability showers possible this afternoon and evening.
The above synoptic setup is a dynamic one which includes a
tightening pressure gradient. This coupled with strong flow and cold
air advection will result in deep mixing and therefore strong winds
developing today. Given the extent of the cold air aloft, the low to
mid level lapse rates are forecast to steepen quite a bit during
today. This will result in the maintenance of lower clouds (stratus
early this morning then stratocumulus), and if any clearing takes
place during this morning it is expected to fill in. Due to just
enough instability developing this afternoon, some snow/rain showers
will be possible across the region although the greatest chance
should be north and west of I-95. There is even the potential for a
heavier snow shower or squall especially in the Pocono region. Given
the steepening low to mid level rates and colder air aloft, there is
at least some potential for some graupel in any heavier shower that
is able to develop. Any snow accumulations should be limited given
the still milder boundary layer outside of the Poconos (also warmer
ground), however up to an inch of snow is possible mainly in parts
of the Poconos.
An increasingly windy day is expected which continues tonight as 45-
55 knots of flow at 850 mb (strongest tonight into Monday) within a
well mixed boundary layer translates into peak wind gusts in the 40-
50 mph range. The model point forecast soundings show efficient deep
mixing due to steep low-level lapse rates. The strongest winds today
may be across about the southern half of the area, then everywhere
tonight when the core of the colder air aloft swings through. Given
the very saturated ground, it may take less wind to down some trees
(although there are no leaves on the trees) and therefore simplified
the Wind Advisory and made it start for all areas early this
afternoon.
Despite the air temperatures today being near average, the
combination of strong winds (and falling dew points) will result in
apparent temperatures about 10-15 degrees below the actual air
temperatures (even colder tonight).

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
With strong and still strengthening low pressure to our northeast
and high pressure building in from the west, a strong pressure
gradient will continue over the region Monday. This gradient will
begin to relax some Monday night but should still be felt some into
Tuesday. Strong winds are expected again Monday, and with deep
mixing due to steep low-level lapse rates in place gusts of 40-50
mph are expected. It is noted that some guidance is stronger at the
top of the mixed layer Monday with 50-55 knots. That should not
fully mix down to the surface, and therefore kept the Wind Advisory
through the day Monday. The winds will start to diminish Monday
evening then continue into the overnight hours. Much drier air
arriving and with the addition of some subsidence is expected to
result in more sunshine.
As high pressure builds closer from the west and deep low pressure
moves even farther away, the pressure gradient will relax more
during Tuesday. While there will be a breeze still during the day
Tuesday, it will be much less compared to the previous two days. In
addition, no precipitation is expected and with the air mass
undergoing moderation the afternoon temperatures are forecast to
top out into the 50s to low 60s across the area.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Summary...Mild to warm across the area, although it should be cooler
along the coast. Next chance for showers is looking like Friday into
Saturday.
Synoptic Overview...Some mid level ridging slides across Wednesday
into Thursday. Low-level warm air advection will maintain a warmer
air mass across our region ahead of our next system that arrives
Friday into Saturday. There is still some potential that a weak wave
slides by to our north and settles a cold front into our area
Thursday into Friday. The main system however looks to arrive later
Friday into Saturday associated with a more pronounced upper-level
trough.
For Wednesday and Thursday...The pattern favors a warmer air mass to
be in place, although there will be much cooler temperatures along
the coast due to lighter flow and therefore a sea breeze. Despite
some ridging in place during this time frame, it may be flat enough
to allow some weak shortwave energy to track just to our north. This
could settle a cold front into our area later Thursday. While this
looks to be on the weak side due to the lack of more of a trough, it
could offer at least some cooling closer to the coast. Overall, a
cooler air mass will be in place along the coast due to a southeast
to south breeze off the chilly ocean waters. Both of these days
still look to be dry.
For Friday and Saturday...An upper-level trough is forecast to be
shifting out across the Plains with time. A potentially closed low
across the Southwest U.S. along with a closed low dropping
southeastward from central Canada may come together. This should
drive surface low pressure along a baroclinic zone and start to
arrive in our area later Friday before shifting offshore into
Saturday. This timing can certainly change though as it will depend
on the aforementioned systems interacting and then how they shift
eastward. Given the uncertainty with the timing, kept the PoPs once
again no higher than chance. Temperatures are forecast to be cooling
some mostly on Saturday as the system is currently forecast to be
shifting to our east.

.AVIATION /17Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Rest of Today...Primarily VFR, although a quick drop to MVFR is
possible near KRDG/KABE. Isolated to scattered rain/snow showers
this afternoon. Brief visibility restrictions are possible. W
winds around 15-25 kt with gusts up to 30-40 kt. High
confidence, lower confidence with regards to ceilings dropping.
Tonight...A rain/snow shower is possible early, but should
quickly diminish after 01Z. Otherwise, VFR expected with skies
clearing late. W-NW winds around 15-20 kt with gusts up to
30-35 kt. Moderate confidence.
Monday...VFR expected. Lingering morning clouds will give way to
SKC. W-NW winds around 20-30 kt with gusts up to 35-45 kt
possible. Moderate confidence.
Outlook...
Tuesday...VFR. West-northwest winds 10-20 knots. High confidence.
Wednesday and Thursday...VFR. Southwest winds 5-10 knots. High
confidence.

Gale Warning remains in effect for all our waters through tonight. A
west to west-northwest wind will increase through the day as deeper
mixing develops. A strong gale event is expected to unfold with wind
gusts peaking between 35-45 knots through tonight.
Outlook...
Monday...Gale force winds are expected, although these will subside
at night.
Tuesday through Thursday...The conditions should be below Small
Craft Advisory criteria.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The main change with a midday update we just made was to upgrade
Philadelphia and other adjacent counties to a Coastal Flood
Warning through early this evening as water levels here are
running higher than forecast leading up to this afternoon's high
tide. We now expect MODERATE levels of coastal flooding along
the tidal Delaware. Otherwise, high tide along the oceanfront
has passed but Coastal Flood Warnings and Advisories remain in
effect for NJ and DE ocean zones this afternoon due to back bay
flooding and flooding in tidal inlets.
Increasing offshore winds will reduce the coastal flood threat
after today's high tide cycle.
