.SYNOPSIS...
Strong low pressure will continue to move northward deeper into
eastern Canada through tonight. An arctic front will sweep across
our area Sunday, then high pressure will extend into our area Sunday
night into Monday. Low pressure is forecast to track from the
southeast states northeastward and off the Mid-Atlantic coast Monday
night and Tuesday. The center of high pressure slides to our south
later Wednesday into Thursday, then another storm may arrive Friday
into Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
With the passage of the cold front today, temperatures have begun
their tumble this afternoon while westerly winds have picked up with
gusts up to 35-45 mph. Windy conditions will persist for a few more
hours before slowly relaxing tonight, though higher elevations may
continue to see a breezy night with WSW winds around 15-20 mph.
Overnight lows will drop into the mid 20s to low 30s.

For Sunday, confidence continues to increase that much of the region
has the potential for snow squalls beginning around mid morning
through the early afternoon hours. A reinforcing arctic cold front
will sweep through the region will be supported by a robust mid
level trough and a powerful jet streak aloft, providing ample
baroclinic forcing across the region. This combined with a fairly
moistened low level profile through 700mb within the dendritic
growth layer, favorable low-level lapse rates, and around 30-80 J/kg
of CAPE, many signs continue to point towards an environment prime
for snow squall development. Blowing snow, reduced visibilities, and
the potential for a flash freeze are all possible along a line of
heavy snow showers along the cold front. Timing for this will begin
a few hours after sunrise for eastern PA before moving towards the I-
95 corridor by late morning/early afternoon. Highest confidence for
areas to see snow squalls will be across the elevated regions in
eastern PA, including the Poconos and Lehigh Valley, and northwest
NJ, where we have categorical PoPs (>75%). Further south and east,
confidence has increased (PoPs now >50%) that this line will reach
the I-95 corridor by late morning to early afternoon and cause
significant impacts to travel as the line of heavy, blowing snow
showers moves through. For extreme southern New Jersey and the
southern Delmarva, we could see a rain/snow mix by the time the line
arrives in the afternoon, but reduced visibilities are still a
concern. Temperatures may warm slightly during the morning (some
locations may reach the mid 30s to low 40s), but are expected to
tank at the onset of heavy snowfall and behind the arctic front.

While overall snow accumulations will generally be around an inch or
less, snow squalls cause dangerous travel conditions. During a snow
squall, the last place you want to be is on the road! The rapid
onset of heavy snowfall and strong winds will cause a sudden drop in
visibilities, making travel impossible. The heavy snowfall along with
an abrupt drop in temperatures could lead to a flash freeze, turning
roadways into ice. Delay travel if a snow squall warning is issued.
If you are caught on the road when a snow squall occurs, use extreme
caution, slow down, turn on your hazards, pull over safely to the
side of the road, and when safe, quickly exit your vehicle and move
as far from the road as possible.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Much colder with the potential for some light snow Monday night
and Tuesday.

A closed low centered near Hudson Bay Canada is forecast to amplify
southward through Tuesday night. Meanwhile, very cold surface high
pressure initially extends into our area but then retreats closer to
the Plains. A surface front is forecast to be draped well to our
south across Florida and into the northern Gulf of Mexico. It will
be cold during this time frame with high temperatures only into the
20s and 30s across the region. The winds do not look all that
strong, however enough of a breeze especially Tuesday and Tuesday
night to knock wind chill values down into the teens and single
digits.

As the aformentioned trough amplifies southward and eventually
eastward, the setup is there for overrunning of moisture up and over
the cold air mass. The upper-level energy is forecast to develop
surface low pressure across the Southeastern states near or along an
old surface front. The northward positioning of this low and also
the incoming energy from the upper-level trough will determine where
the snow occurs and how organized it is. The associated lift will be
above a much drier low-level air mass, initially, therefore the
associated light snow may remain aloft for a time. With time though
the lower levels are forecast to saturate enough to result in some
light snow. The forcing for ascent continues for a time Tuesday and
therefore some light snow, although this should be tapering off
especially during the second half of the day. The overall wave looks
to be weak/flat enough to keep snow amounts on the light side and
the current forecast has totals of 2 inches or less across the
region. The clouds should be on the increase during Monday as the
aformentioned system arrives from the southwest.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Summary...Cold with an opportunity for snow Friday into Saturday
with potentially a stronger winter storm.

Synoptic Overview...A closed low is forecast to remain centered near
Hudson Bay Canada into Wednesday, then it may begin to shift
eastward some for the second half of the week. The southern flank of
this closed low is forecast to amplify south and eastward into mid-
week, then stronger shortwave energy may significantly amplify it
across the eastern half of the nation during the end of the week.
This pattern results in cold air across our area, and we will have
to watch energy sliding near or to our south and east.

For Wednesday...The southern extension of the strong eastern
Canadian trough is forecast to be in place during this time frame.
The center of arctic high pressure slides across the southern Plains
to the lower Mississippi Valley, however it is forecast to extend
into our area and therefore result in a dry but very cold day. There
will be a tightened pressure gradient in place though and this will
maintain a noticeable breeze. This should also deliver the coldest
day of the week with the entire area struggling to reach freezing.
Wind chills are forecast to be in the teens to single digits, with
even some below zero readings in the Poconos at night.

For Thursday...As some additional energy rounds the base of the
large eastern Canadian upper-level trough, surface high pressure is
forecast to slide by to our south and southeast. This results in the
low-level flow backing more from the southwest with a bit of warm
air advection getting underway. The cold conditions continue,
although it should not be quite as harsh as Wednesday. The shortwave
trough embedded within the larger upper-level trough is forecast to
carry surface low pressure across the eastern Great Lakes region by
daybreak Friday. It is this evolution that becomes much more
uncertain into the next day or so. At this time, we carry a dry
forecast.

For Friday and Saturday...The model guidance is good agreement that
a strong upper-level trough will be shifting deeper into the eastern
states. There are some signals that a winter storm is possible,
however the placement and timing of the surface low and therefore
impacts will greatly depend on the placement/timing of the upper-
level trough. Some guidance has a much stronger lead shortwave
trough that pulls the surface low much closer to the Mid-Atlantic
coast and therefore a stronger winter storm. Some other guidance is
slower and or weaker with that lead shortwave trough and thus shoots
the surface low farther away from the coast leaving little in the
way of precipitation. The ensembles all show the upper-level trough,
however there are differences with its strength and timing. Given
the uncertainty, included low-end chance PoPs (30 percent) across
the region. It does look cold enough at nearly all areas for the
chance for mainly snow, with more cold air filtering in Saturday in
the wake of whatever storm occurs.

.AVIATION /21Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...

Rest of this afternoon...VFR with some SCT to BKN clouds at
times. West to southwest winds 20-25 kts with gusts around 30-40
kts. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...VFR with some lingering clouds possible. Southwest
winds gradually diminishing with gusts dropping off before 06Z,
but remaining sustained near 10-15 kts most of the night. High
confidence.

Sunday...VFR conditions will prevail. Confidence is increasing
that a line of snow showers or snow squalls will sweep quickly
across the region from around 15-19Z. This activity would be
accompanied by brief and rapid onset of MVFR or IFR, perhaps
even LIFR conditions lasting around 30 mins or so at most and
would be accompanied by briefly stronger winds with gusts near
45 kts possible. Have opted to include a PROB30 group for all
TAF sites to highlight this potential for now, although TEMPO or
prevailing groups for lower conditions will likely be needed in
a later update as confidence on timing and impacts increases.
Winds will start south to southwest 10-15 kts early with gusts
near 25 kts possible, then shifting west and increasing to 20-25
kts with gusts of 30-40 kts possible by 18Z. High confidence in
the overall pattern, but lower confidence in the exact details
of lower conditions in the snow showers and squalls.

Outlook...

Sunday night...VFR. West winds 10-15 knots with gusts up to 25
knots, diminishing to less than 10 knots. Moderate confidence.

Monday and Tuesday...VFR during the day with increasing clouds. A
period of sub-VFR conditions probable at night and Tuesday morning
with some snow. West to southwest winds 10 knots or less, becoming
north to northwest 10-15 knots Tuesday. Low confidence.

Wednesday and Thursday...VFR overall. Northwest to west winds 10-15
knots with gusts to around 20 knots, becoming southwest on Thursday
and diminishing some. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Gale Warnings remain in effect for the coastal waters through
Sunday. Strong westerly winds behind the cold front today will
continue to cause gale-force wind gusts over the waters through this
evening. Winds will fall below gale criteria overnight, but quickly
ramp back up after sunrise Sunday morning. As a result, Gales were
extended for the coastal waters through the period tomorrow and into
Sunday evening. Seas will remain around 6-10 feet.

The Gale Warning for the Delware Bay will likely be replaced with a
SCA tonight after it expires. Gales are possible again for the bay
Sunday afternoon, but confidence is lower at this time.

Outlook...

Sunday night...Gale force gusts lingering for a time in the evening
on the New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic coastal waters, otherwise a
period of Small Craft Advisory conditions.

Monday...The conditions are anticipated to be below Small Craft
Advisory criteria.

Tuesday and Wednesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions should
develop Tuesday night and continue Wednesday.

Thursday...The conditions overall may be below Small Craft Advisory
criteria.

.HYDROLOGY...
Multiple river forecast points on the Passaic River remain in
flood stage, with some spots at moderate or major flood stage.
Rain amounts overnight were between 0.50 and 1 inch, with a few
spots on the NJ coastal plain up to 1.25 inches. Normally this
wouldn't be enough to cause flooding concerns, but with the
ground already saturated and some rivers still in flood from the
last event, we are seeing rises on many of the rivers in our
area. Please refer to the latest Flood Warnings for more
information, and have a multiple ways to receive any further
flood warnings that come out tonight. Do not attempt to drive
through any flooded roadways.

What does MINOR, MODERATE and MAJOR mean?

MINOR FLOODING: Minimal to no property damage, but some public
threat can be expected (e.g. inundation of roads).

MODERATE FLOODING: Some inundation of structures and roads near
streams/rivers are expected. Evacuations of people and/or the
transfer of property to higher elevations can be anticipated.

MAJOR FLOODING: Extensive inundation of structures and roads.
Evacuations of people are on a larger scale. The transfer of
property to higher elevations is needed.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Widespread minor to moderate coastal flooding occurred with the
morning high tide along the Atlantic coast. Water levels are
receding there, and we should be able to expire most of the
advisories and warnings this afternoon. The exception will be
for Ocean County and Sussex County (DE), where the strong
southwest winds will keep water trapped along the back bays. The
flooding for these areas may last into tonight, which may prompt
an extension of the coastal flood headlines.

For portions of Upper Delaware Bay into the tidal Delaware
River, current observations remain on track to reach moderate to
near major flooding, so the Coastal Flood Warning remains in
effect for these areas. We have maintained the forecast to Major
flood stage at Burlington and the upper portions of the tidal
Delaware River. This means that extensive tidal inundation of
roads and structures is possible. Tidal flooding will likely
reoccur for the coming high tide cycles along the tidal Delaware
River. Based on what occurred earlier this past week, the high
tides will likely reach minor flood stage and may near moderate
flood stage at Philadelphia, and especially at Burlington.
Thus, additional headlines will probably be needed to cover
this.
