Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 227 PM EDT Mon Apr 1 2024 .SYNOPSIS... A weak area of low pressure will track out to sea by later this afternoon. Another low pressure system then tracks into the eastern Great Lakes area later Tuesday into Wednesday, however a new low develops near the Mid- Atlantic coast and strengthens Wednesday. This new low continues to strengthen as it moves away Thursday and Friday. High pressure should then start to build into our area later Saturday into Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... 1205 PM...Adjusted temperatures down a little in spots for this afternoon based on latest observations and trend but otherwise there were no major changes made to the near term forecast with the midday update. Rain north of a stalled frontal boundary is still ongoing across much of the area as of midday but will quickly be exiting the region over the next 1 to 3 hours as this first wave exits. However chances for some spotty showers and areas of drizzle will linger even after the rain ends so still not a very nice afternoon, with temps in the 40s to low 50s for most of it with the wet, dreary conditions. A bit of a lull continues this evening before next round of rain arrives late tonight with another, stronger wave of low pressure. It'll be more the reverse of today... dreary, perhaps drizzly evening followed by steady rain late at night. Lows mostly in the 40s. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... Summary...Rounds of rain and overall cool/chilly conditions continue. Strong shortwave energy diving southeastward from south-central Canada Tuesday combined with a strengthening upper-level jet is forecast to result in a strong upper-level trough into the Ohio Valley by early Wednesday. This trough looks to evolve into a deep closed low which then settles into the East Wednesday night. At the surface, strong low pressure initially tracks up the Ohio Valley and into the eastern Great Lakes region. As this occurs, the low is forecast to occlude leaving a warm front draped across the Mid- Atlantic region with a cold air damming signature noted to its north. This results in a secondary surface low developing in the vicinity of the Delmarva region Tuesday night or Wednesday. This low then strengthens as it tracks northeastward through Wednesday night. There appears to have been a shift in much of the guidance with the secondary low taking a more westward track and possibly developing a little later. The combination of sustained warm air advection aloft fed by a veering lower level flow and increased isentropic lift up and over a surface warm front will produce a rain shield Tuesday across the area. There may be a heavier burst in the morning with perhaps a lessening of the rain for a time Tuesday afternoon. The synoptic setup that is forecast continues to show a wedge of cool marine influenced air across much of our region as a chilly east to northeast breeze occurs off the coast. The model forecast soundings continue to show some increasing elevated instability spreading northward some later Tuesday afternoon and night. The magnitude of the instability looks sufficient for some lightning production, however most it not all of the convective elements would remain elevated. The thunderstorm coverage and intensity will depend on the placement of the warm front, especially regarding if some could become surface-based. As of now given the marine influence, the air mass at the surface looks to remain more stable especially given overrunning rain which tends to enhance the cool wedge during this time of the year. The severe thunderstorm threat is non- zero for about the southern half of the area (especially Delmarva into southern New Jersey), however it should be stressed that this will depend on the northward advancement or not of the warm sector. If some stronger storms even if elevated where to develop, some hail cannot be ruled out especially if there is sufficient instability above the freezing layer. The secondary low may not develop until Wednesday and this could keep the elevated instability in place longer. We may have to watch Delmarva into southern New Jersey as a more inland track of the developing secondary low may allow for a northward advection of the warm sector as the surface winds turn more from the southeast. If this were to occur, the duration looks to be limited given the surface low shifts northeastward. Otherwise, periods of rain may tend to evolve into a more showery scenario from the south as the elevated warm front is able to shift northward much more compared to the surface warm front. Once the secondary low develops and then becomes the primary one during the course of Wednesday, additional rain or showers is expected with perhaps even an uptick in coverage and intensity for a time. The development of the secondary low will also be key regarding the potential for wintry precipitation across the Pocono region Wednesday as the warm air advection is cut off and cooling takes place from the north. Some accumulating wet snow may occur across especially the higher elevations of the Poconos and far northwest New Jersey. The snow to liquid ratios however look to be poor given the marginally cold air. As the transition takes place, there could be some sleet or freezing rain before going to a wet snow. This evolution is of low confidence, however elevation looks to be key regarding the accumulating snow. An east to northeast wind is forecast to keep the marine influence locked in, with the possible exception for a brief time on Wednesday across Delmarva into southern New Jersey. The latter will depend on the location of the surface low as it develops. North of the surface low, an easterly jet is forecast to strengthen quite a bit and this will result in windy conditions mainly for the northern New Jersey coastal areas Tuesday night and Wednesday. Through Wednesday night, rainfall totals for the entire event look to be 1-3 inches with some locally higher amounts possible. This amount of rainfall however is spread out over a longer period of time, however it could result in some of our more sensitive rivers to go into minor flood stage. This will all depend on exactly where the heaviest rain falls and also if there are periods of higher rainfall rates realized (convective contribution). Given this longer duration rainfall and also uncertainty, opted to hold off on any flood watches. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Summary...Still unsettled Thursday with cool temperatures, then improvement into the weekend. Synoptic Overview...A significant closed low continues moving across the East, which is then forecast to gradually weaken and shift offshore to start the weekend. At the surface, strong low pressure is forecast to track away from our area Thursday and Friday. The lessening of the trough will result in surface high pressure building in later Saturday and Sunday. As we go through Thursday, the coastal low will track towards coastal southeast New England. The speed and track of this low will influence how long the precipitation lasts over our area and how much wintry precip occurs on its back side. Right now it looks like some snow across the southern Poconos and northwest New Jersey, especially over the higher elevations, and it's even possible this change over to rain/snow could expand farther south before precipitation winds down from southwest to northeast early Thursday. Some accumulating snow can't be ruled out through at least the I-80 corridor but confidence remains low on the details. Elsewhere, some instability rain showers will be around and these could continue into Friday as a surface trough swings through. We start to get into an overall drying trend especially later Friday. However, the upper-level low will only slowly move away to our east so this should keep it cool, breezy/windy and mostly cloudy. High pressure should eventually start building in later Saturday and Sunday with drier conditions and also some moderating temperatures. && .AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
