Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure approaches the region today and crosses the region
tonight. High pressure begins to build in towards the region
later Sunday and regains dominance over the region Monday night
through Thursday. The next low pressure system could influence
the area by next Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Quiet conditions overnight, though low clouds are now streaming
into the region.

The main story will be the storm system that will affect the
area later today through tonight. It is worth noting that
forecast models have generally trended stronger and wetter with
this system warranting issuance of a Flood Watch extending from
around metro Philly northward towards portions of northern NJ.
The system is developing near the Texas Gulf coast. Going
through tonight, this low will continue to take shape as it
moves east and northeast. It's actually a bit of a complex setup
as the system will be driven in part by a strong southern jet
while at the same time a northern stream trough will be diving
ESE towards the Great Lakes with an associated baroclinic zone
in the lower levels. The upshot is that by Saturday morning
there looks to be double-barreled low pressure setting up
extending from the Great Lakes southward towards the SE CONUS
with the northern low centered near Lake Huron and the southern
low near Alabama. Meanwhile across the mid Atlantic clouds will
lower and thicken by the late evening through the overnight and
it actually looks like we'll see a low level marine stratus deck
forming and moving inland across the forecast area by Saturday
morning. This should most likely preclude any fog development
with lows by morning generally expected to be in the upper 30s
to around 40 except low 30s over the Pocono Plateau.

Saturday is when things start to get more interesting. The
northern low should weaken over Ontario while the southern low
strengths while moving north and east and reaching Virginia by
evening. This will result in rain spreading into the area from
west to east and it looks like the start time should be a bit
sooner than previous forecasts with rain starting to develop
over Delmarva and portions of eastern PA by late morning and
spreading into the remainder of the forecast area through the
early afternoon. Also worth noting, while this looks to be rain
just about everywhere the exception will be over Pocono Plateau
where a mix with snow and sleet is likely for a time late
morning into the afternoon with profiles hovering near or just
above 0 C in the lower levels. Nothing more than a light coating
in spots here will occur, if that, before it becomes all rain
in the afternoon. Highs Saturday will range from the mid 50s
over southern DE and our adjacent eastern shore counties due the
approaching warm front from the south with upper 40s to low 50s
expected near the urban corridor and 40s north of here except
over the Pocono Plateau where it will probably remain in the 30s
through the day.

By late afternoon and especially Saturday evening expect the
rain to be heavy at times as the deepening coastal low tracks
northward right through the area. PWATs look to rise to the
range of 1.0 to 1.25 inches which is quite high for this time of
year and the deep layer lift will be quite strong as the
southern stream energy swings through with the upper trough
taking on a neutral to even slightly negative tilt by Sunday
morning. There also looks to be some elevated instability so
we've maintained the mention of thunder in the grids. The upshot
is again that the rain could fall heavy at times especially
Saturday evening...especially for areas near and north of the
urban corridor. Urban/small stream flooding will be possible by
this time with WPC continuing to highlight the area in a
MARGINAL risk for excessive rainfall. River flooding becomes
more likely by Sunday (details in hydro section below). The
other story will be increasing SE winds that generally look to
be 15 to 25 gusting upwards of 35 to 40 mph Saturday evening and
overnight...strongest near the coast. So all in all, a
wet/stormy setup. The good news is the system will be
progressive with the rain starting to wind down south to north
overnight Saturday night as the low lifts north of the area by
Sunday morning. The bad news though being that the 1-2 inches of
rainfall we're now generally expecting for most of our NJ and
PA zones will be falling in a period of roughly 12 hours or so.
One more thing worth mentioning, it's possible the rain could
wind down as a brief burst of wet snow Saturday night over the
Poconos but it doesn't look like there'd be any accumulation.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The period begins with strengthening surface low pressure
tracking north into New England and high pressure building in
from the Ohio Valley. The result will be a tight pressure
gradient and gusty winds. Some rain and snow showers are
possible across our northwestern zones. Temperatures will be in
the 40s to lower 50s.

Any remaining snow showers in the cyclonic flow will likely
come to an end Sunday night. Lows will be in the 20s and 30s. It
will remain brisk as winds remain gusty. With the gusty winds,
apparent temperatures will be running in the teens to lower 20s.

We will likely lose precipitation chances on Monday.
Temperatures will be comparable to Sunday. But once again the
wind will be the most impactful. Winds could actually increase
Sunday night and persist into Monday. Wind advisory criteria may
be met, especially at the higher elevations north and west.

Winds are expected to settle down Monday night. Temperatures
will range from the upper 20s to upper 30s across the forecast
area.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
If you like Spring, you'll like the mid- to late-week period.
But it will still chilly on the beaches.

For the Tuesday through Thursday period, the surface high will
slide by to the south and then off the coast. Surface winds will
either be from the southwest or the west with warm advection
aloft. This will help lead to a considerable warming trend.
Temperatures are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees warmer on
Tuesday compared to Monday with another 5 degrees or so warmer
Wednesday and another 5 degrees or so warmer on Thursday. This
should bring high temperatures to around 70 from Philly
southward, away from the coast at least, while the chilly ocean
waters will keep the beaches closer to 50.

Friday looks like another warm day, at the moment, with more 70
degree readings. I will also introduce some showers as the next
cold front approaches the region from the west.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of Tonight...MVFR CIGs starting to develop southern
terminals and will continue to overspread all TAF sites due to
low stratus. SE and E winds less than 10 kt throughout the
night. Moderate confidence

Saturday...MVFR, lowering to IFR by afternoon, then LIFR late
as rain develops. East to southeast winds increasing to 10 to 15
knots gusting upwards of 20 to 30 knots by late day. Moderate
confidence.

Saturday night...IFR to LIFR with rain, heavy at times through
the evening and then eventually wind down overnight. Southeast
winds 15 to 20 gusting 25 go 30 knots veering around to westerly
late at night. Conditions also improving to MVFR as this
occurs. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Sunday...Becoming VFR with strong W to NW winds gusting to 35
kts, possibly higher. High confidence.

Monday...VFR with strong W to NW winds gusting to 40 kts,
possibly higher. High confidence.

Tuesday and Wednesday...VFR with lighter west-northwest winds.
High confidence.

.MARINE...
Small craft advisory conditions, primarily for elevated seas
continues on the Atlantic coastal waters. Seas should begin to
diminish tonight, and we could see up to a 12 hour lull in SCA
conditions on the coastal waters from Sandy Hook to Little Egg
Inlet. Otherwise, should see seas hover around 5 feet.

SCA conditions aren't expected on the Delaware Bay overnight.

On all waters, low stratus, or even some fog could develop
overnight, especially close to the coast. At this point, it
appears as if the winds will stay elevated enough to limit
visibility restrictions, but will be watching trends closely.

For Saturday, east to southeast winds increase through the day
with seas coming up as well. Small Craft Advisory conditions
expected on all our coastal waters by 18z with Gales likely at
night.

Outlook...

Sunday-Monday...Gales likely.

Tuesday...SCA likely, especially the first half of the day.

Wednesday...Sub-SCA conditions expected.

.HYDROLOGY...
Another round of rain is expected late Saturday and Saturday
night. At the moment and in general, we're going to run with
0.50 to 1.00 inch across the southern half of the HSA and 1.00
to 2.00 inches across the northern half. With all the recent
rain we've received, creeks, streams, and rivers are running
high and are more prone to flooding.

This said, minor river flood is looking more likely across
portions of the Passaic and Raritan basins beginning on Sunday.
Smaller creeks and streams could overflow Saturday night. Low
lying and poor drainage flooding could also commence Saturday
night.

A Flood Watch has been issued for the urban corridor from
Philadelphia northward as well as portions of northern New
Jersey.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The trend of increasing onshore flow with the upcoming storm
has led to forecasts of higher tidal levels with this
afternoon's forecasts. Consequently, Coastal Flood Watches have
been issued for the upper most part of Delaware Bay and for the
tidal Delaware River. Coastal Flood Advisories have been issues
for the remaining waters of our CWA. These flags go into effect
Saturday morning and continue into Sunday.

The next high tide (this evening and overnight) will be the
lower of the two daily tides and presently we are not expecting
any significant issues with this tide. The fcst level at
Burlington NJ may breach minor levels, but there is some
uncertainty with that attm. No advisory will be in effect for
this small possibility.

The more important event begins Saturday morning with the
subsequent tides (three). Onshore flow will bring levels easily
to minor levels at most sites Saturday. The follwing tide
Saturday evening and into Sunday morning will have the greatest
possibility for reaching Moderate levels along the upper
Delaware Bay and the tidal Delaware River. The storm system has
trended a bit slower today, so with the possibility of the
enhanced tides reaching into Sunday, we went to three high tides
cycles with the flags for now. The winds will switch around to
offshore Sunday and hopefully the a trend back to lower levels
will arrive before the afternoon high tides at the upper
Delaware Bay and Delaware River.
