Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1015 AM EST Mon Mar 4 2024 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will remain in place across New England today. A weak low pressure system will track northward along the coast late tonight into Tuesday bringing another round of rain to the area. A stronger low pressure system will impact the area Wednesday through early Thursday bringing yet another round of rain. The pattern will remain unsettled into next weekend with another system impacting the region on Saturday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... Clouds favoring north NJ and along the Delaware River (mostly) this morning. An increase in high/mid level clouds will occur later this afternoon over Delmarva and south NJ as low pressure moves in from the South. We have only needed a few adjustments in the hourly grids with the update as overall, the previous fcst is working out well. Temperatures will remain very mild today with upper 50s and low 60s common across the region. Earliest arrival time of rainfall across DelMarVa should be around 6pm with the most likely time of rainfall beginning shortly before midnight. Further north and east those time range are delayed with rainfall not expected in Philly until 2-3am and not until 4-5am across the Lehigh Valley and central/northern NJ. Light steady rainfall should continue through the overnight and will end mid morning with the consensus of guidance ending rainfall between 7-9a across DelMarVa and closer to 10a-12pm Tuesday for the more northern locations. No significant impacts are anticipated other than to continue to prime the rivers ahead of another event later in the week. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... As the early week system departs by Tuesday night, we should get a roughly 18-24 hour break in precipitation ahead of the Wednesday system. A southern stream trough will lift northeast toward the East Coast Tuesday night into Wednesday, remaining in the vicinity of the East Coast into Thursday. Cyclogensis is anticipated to occur across the Southeast Tuesday night, with the surface low lifting northeast and reaching the Mid-Atlantic by Wednesday night then departing offshore into Thursday. Tuesday night should be largely dry, though some light rain may begin before daybreak in some spots before daybreak Wednesday. Rainfall will overspread the region from south to north during the late morning and afternoon Wednesday and depart late overnight. PWats near 1-1.5" could support some locally moderate to heavy rainfall rates at times. Some light rain may linger into Thursday morning, but the main show will be over by then. Storm total rainfall amounts with the Wednesday system are currently forecast to range from around 1-2" area wide, with the greatest amounts closer to the coast. Locally higher rainfall amounts are certainly possible. Given the antecedent rain events and soggy ground, this may result in some minor flooding of low lying and urban areas and could also result in some river flooding as well. As the low pressure strengthens and draws nearer to the area Wednesday night and Thursday, north to northeast winds will become a bit breezy. Sustained winds near 15-20 mph can be expected during this period with gusts near 30-35 mph possible. The lack of any cold advection between systems will keep temperatures above normal through Thursday with highs in the 50s to possibly near 60 degrees in spots on Wednesday, depending on how quickly the rain moves in. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... We should see another 24 hour break in rainfall from Thursday night through Friday ahead of the next system impacting the region by Saturday through at least Saturday night. Friday is shaping up to be a fairly decent day amid the barrage of rainy systems, with highs in the 50s and partly cloudy skies. This will be attributed to shortwave ridging passing across the region and surface high pressure briefly ridging down into the area from the northeast. Heading into the weekend, the unsettled pattern will continue as troughing amplifies across the Great Lakes. Another low pressure system is forecast to develop across the Midwest on Friday, pushing east and eventually impacting the Mid-Atlantic by Saturday. Guidance begins to diverge significantly on the ultimate outcome of this setup, so the details remain unclear. however, it does appear to be a wet period with temperatures returning closer to normal. && .AVIATION /15Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
