What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Mar 1, 1:02 PM EST, 1 hour 30 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Mar 1, 1:02 PM EST, 1 hour 30 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
102 PM EST Fri Mar 1 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered near the area early this morning will shift
offshore through today and tonight. A weak area of low pressure
skirts to our south and east bringing the return of some
precipitation tonight through Saturday. Very weak high pressure
briefly returns for Sunday and Monday but the pattern becomes
unsettled beyond this time with multiple areas of low pressure
likely moving up the coast.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
High pressure centered about 100 miles or so east of Atlantic
City will continue to drift out to sea. High clouds will
continue to spread into the region from the southwest.
Temperatures are already up in the 40s, so will bump high temps
up by 2-3 degrees throughout.

Otherwise, low pressure over/just offshore of the southeastern
CONUS this afternoon will begin to move to the northeast.
Precipitation from this system will begin to spread into our
region from the south/southwest late this evening into tonight.

Only notable forecast concern to address is what will happen
with precipitation onset for our more northern and northwestern
most areas tonight. Many models suggests some CAD may be in
place during onset of precipitation such that our northern and
northwestern most areas see some frozen ptypes. However, ongoing
warm air advection will likely erode any CAD in place such that
any frozen ptypes seen in the northern and northwestern most
areas only persists for a few initial hours during the tonight
period. No accumulations are really expected. At best, the
Poconos and perhaps northern Sussex County NJ could see glaze of
ice or trace of snow before rain and ongoing warm air advection
dominate.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Precipitation will continue through Saturday with periods of light
to moderate rain expected as a weak coastal low forms near eastern
Virginia then moves northward along the coast. Early in the day
there could still be some lingering areas of freezing rain over the
Pocono Plateau but otherwise it should be all rain. Highs will be
mainly in the 40s to low 50s except mid 50s over southern Delaware
and adjacent parts of the eastern MD shore.

Saturday's system looks to be pretty much an "all day rain" type of
event unfortunately with the latest trend being for the rain to wind
down a bit later...likely not until the evening. This will occur as
the weak coastal low continues to move northeast towards Cape Cod
while being driven by very diffuse energy aloft moving through the
long wave upper level ridge over the east. Total rain amounts by
this time should be around .50 to 1.0 inches near and south of the I-
95 corridor with .25 to .50 inches north of here...not enough to
cause any major hydro issues. The surface flow behind the low will
be quite weak though as the low fizzles to our east through
Sunday while we really don't get any type of surface high
building back in. The result of this will be that low level
moisture should remain trapped beneath an inversion keeping it
mostly cloudy right through Sunday and beyond. Along with the
low clouds patchy drizzle is likely for Saturday night in the
wake of the heavier rain from the day. Some fog will be possible
as well. Some of this could even linger into Sunday though not
confident on this so we keep the forecast dry at this time for
the day Sunday. Otherwise it will be a gray but mild day with
highs currently forecast to be in the upper 50s to low 60s. NBM
is even slightly warmer than this but keeping previous forecast
in place as I think the low clouds (which are not being handled
very well by the NBM) will be a limiting factor. In fact it
could even be a bit cooler than forecast.

Little change expected for Sunday night as it will be mostly
cloudy but mild. Some drizzle and fog could redevelop but not
confident enough at this point to put this in the forecast.
Expect overnight lows in the 40s.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The long term period looks to be overall gray and unsettled but
mild for this time of year.

Weak surface ridging may begin to build in from the north by Monday
but this should actually help turn the flow back to the E/SE helping
keep in the low clouds and mist. So expect another gray but mild day
with highs again in the 50s to low 60s...coolest near the coast and
over the southern Poconos and warmest near the I-95 corridor. There
could still even be some drizzle around...especially near the coast.

The forecast becomes a bit more uncertain by next Tuesday and beyond
but will remain on the whole unsettled. For Tuesday, another weak
low could form near the coast as more energy moves through in the SW
flow aloft. This will bring a return to "mentionable" POPs (20
percent) as some light rain or showers could develop. Beyond this
time, a more robust system looks to approach by late Wednesday into
next Thursday but how exactly this evolves meteorologically is
uncertain. The GFS keeps the system more strung out as a slow moving
cold front while the ECMWF and the GEM Global develop a coastal low
to our south and then bring it up the coast. Either way, a period of
steadier, heavier rain appears likely by late day Wednesday into
next Thursday. It stays mild though so wintry precip is not a
concern with this system.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...

Rest of this afternoon...VFR. SE winds 10 to 15 kt, becoming S.
High confidence.

Tonight...VFR initially, then a brief period of MVFR CIGs
before rapidly diminishing to IFR in RA/BR. SE winds 5-10 kts
backing E with time. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Saturday through Saturday night...Sub-VFR with periods of light to
moderate rain during the day. Rain begins to taper off into Saturday
night but patchy drizzle lingers. Good potential that most
sites will see IFR at least part of this period. E-SE winds
around 10-15 kt during the day becoming NW-N winds around 5 kt
at night. Moderate confidence.

Sunday through Sunday night...MVFR to low VFR likely due to
lingering low stratus. northerly winds around 5 to 10 knots for
Sunday veering to northeast around 5 knots for Sunday night. Low
confidence.

Monday through Monday night...Low stratus likely persists with MVFR
to low VFR cigs. East to southeast winds 5 to 10 knots. Low
confidence.

Tuesday...Sub-VFR probable with rain showers. E-SE winds around 10-
15 kt. Low confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Conditions across all zones are expected to be below SCA criteria
through Friday night.

Outlook...

Saturday through Saturday night...SCA conditions possible during the

becoming NW-N winds around 10-15 kt at night. Seas of 3-5 feet
building to 5-8 feet late.

Sunday through Sunday night...SCA conditions likely but mainly due
