.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will briefly build across the region today. A
quick moving low pressure system then crosses the region
tonight into Saturday, followed by high pressure building to our
south Sunday into Monday. A cold front may settle into our area
Monday into Tuesday, then high pressure arrives Wednesday. Low
pressure may then approach from the west during Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Minor updates to the forecast as of late morning...The Wind
Advisories across Carbon/Monroe Counties have been allowed to
expire at 10AM. Winds across the higher terrain have now
diminished below criteria, but a few gusts up to 40 mph are
expected to continue at times today. Otherwise, just made minor
adjustments to hourly temperature and dewpoint grids to reflect
current observations. Previous discussion remains below:
High pressure is beginning to build into the southern portion
of the area. Meanwhile, shower activity continues just to the
north and west of the region across north- central to northeast
Pennsylvania as a result of a combination of upslope flow along
the Appalachians and lake effect influence. Can't completely
rule out one or two of these showers sinking southeast and
grazing the southern Poconos or northwest New Jersey. However,
with dry air increase in the low-levels behind the front and
downsloping flow off the mountains, the probability of anything
meaningful falling remains low so PoPs remain less than 15
percent area wide.
A strong pressure gradient over the region will keep westerly
winds gusty through much of the morning. Winds will generally be
15-25 mph with gusts up to 30-40 mph. Winds will then begin to
diminish, particularly in the back half of the day as the
pressure gradient relaxes with high pressure continuing to push
through the southern half of the region. Otherwise, with clear
skies for much of the day until higher clouds move in with the
approach of the next system, temperatures will rise into the
lower 40s across much of the area.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure wave currently (as of early this morning) located
over the southern Plains will race eastward today and cross just
south of our region tonight. It will then move off the coast
Saturday with sprawling high pressure building in behind it for
Sunday.
The cold front which moved through early this morning will set
up an relatively cold antecedent air mass, providing the proper
set-up for a mostly snow event. Winds off the water may present
some mixing with rain issues along the immediate coast of
southern NJ and DE, where we have lower forecast snowfall, but
inland, all snow, with increasingly prodigious ratios as one
heads northward, approaching 20:1 in the Poconos. Thus, while
forecast precip will be maximized in the south, the "sweet
spot", as it were, where QPF and ratios maximize snowfall,
looks to be across the middle of the forecast area including
Philadelphia metro, where a general 2-5 inches of snow is likely
late tonight as the system crosses east. This aligns fairly well
with the best intersection of the left front exit region of the
upper jet and the best PVA ahead of the upper level shortwave
and vort max. There remains some exact questions on just how far
north and particularly northeast advisory level snowfall gets,
which is compounded by the advisory criteria being an inch
higher to the north of Philly metro. Thus, held advisories back
from the north-central and far north NJ while including the
Poconos, but the northern tier overall is borderline on meeting
criteria. The southern tier has the opposite problem, especially
southern DE, where mild air will limit ratios and present the
aforementioned mixing potential, though its more rain/snow vs
ice. One good thing with this system is that the low is fairly
weak, so winds look pretty light as the system moves through.
Temps will be in the 20s to near 30 for most of the region
tonight, near 20 in the Poconos and near freezing along the
immediate southern NJ/DE coast.
The surface low pulls out quickly on Saturday morning, but the
jet lingering nearby combined with differential advection
induced instability and some late-arriving PVA with upper
shortwave energy could keep some snow showers going much of the
day especially across northern areas. However, the real accums
should be long done by 10 AM. Saturday will otherwise turn
brisk, but temps look likely to rise above freezing for many
despite the chill as the clouds should break for some late day
sun, and that should allow for at least a little melting in
many areas.
High pressure and fresh snow should help temps drop fairly
efficiently on Saturday night as winds lighten up, so temps down
deep into the 20s and potentially upper teens look likely.
Sunshine will be more dominant Sunday and temps again rebound
above freezing, allowing a little more opportunity for some
melting.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Quiet pattern overall through the long term. Sprawling high
pressure initially of Canadian origin dominates Monday with
temps just beginning to moderate a little, with 40s in the
afternoon with some sun. After that, the high gradually shifts
offshore and weakens but still maintains enough dominance to
keep dry weather through Thursday, with temps warming a couple
degrees each day, with near 50 or low 50s for most by Thursday
afternoon, and lows warming to near freezing. Next system may
arrive Friday next week, but at this point it is likely rain.

The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...VFR. West to northwest winds 10-20 kts with gusts to 30
kts. A few gusts around 35 knots possible early this morning.
Winds decrease to around 5-10 kts after 21Z-22Z. High
confidence.
Tonight...Sub-VFR conditions expected with periods of light to
moderate snow. MVFR conditions develop from west to east likely
begin at KRDG/KABE around 02-05Z, reaching I-95 terminals
around 03-06Z, and then KMIV/KACY around 05-07Z. IFR conditions
become more likely after 06-08Z. Winds becoming light and
variable. Moderate confidence on overall pattern, lower
confidence on timing of restrictions.
Outlook...
Saturday...Sub-VFR mainly in the morning with VFR likely in the
afternoon for most. Winds west to northwest around 10 kts with a
few gusts up to 20 kts. Moderate confidence.
Sunday...VFR. Winds west to southwest 10-15 kts with gusts to 20
kts. High confidence.
Monday...VFR. Winds west to northwest around 10 kts. High
confidence.

.MARINE...
The Gale Warning from Sandy Hook to Cape May NJ remains in
effect until 1 PM this afternoon with winds gusting up to 35
kt. The Gale Warning from Cape May NJ to Fenwick Island
including the Delaware Bay has been allowed to expire and has
been replaced by a Small Craft Advisory until 1 PM this
afternoon. Gusts up to 30 kt are expected through this time.
Otherwise, gusts diminish to around 20-30 knots in the
afternoon and then 15-20 knots in the evening. Seas diminish to
2-4 feet by the evening. Winds continue to diminish overnight to
around 10 kts or less as seas decrease to 2 feet or less.
