.SYNOPSIS...
As a weak low pressure system tracks mostly to our north tonight,
a cold front crosses our area late tonight and early Friday morning.
High pressure arrives for the weekend before retreating northward
some as low pressure tracks well south and southeast of our area
Monday through Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of this afternoon, surface analysis depicts a high pressure
retreating southward into the Gulf of Mexico and low pressure
advancing southeastward across southwestern Quebec. A cold front
extends from this low pressure southwest across the Great Lakes
and Midwest. Another high pressure is centered over northern
Ontario, following the low pressure. Aloft, a weak ridge extends
from the southeastern US northeastward off the Atlantic coast,
with a shortwave extending from western Quebec southwest into
the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest. Another ridge dominates the
northern Plains. Satellite shows plenty of clouds across
northern areas of our region extending well northward into
southern Canada, while mostly clear skies dominate southern
parts of the forecast area and continue for some distance
southward down the Eastern Seaboard.
As the aforementioned surface front and upper trough approach,
we are already starting to see clouds build back across the
region, and this trend will continue into this evening.
Increasing upper divergence ahead of the trough coupled with
low-level convergence ahead of the approaching cold front likely
leads rain showers to break out across the region as we head
towards midnight, with fairly widespread showers as we approach
dawn. There could be a little snow in the Poconos late tonight
into Friday, but at this point accumulations look very minor and
spotty, as temps will struggle to drop much tonight as the
clouds and precip moves in. Most areas south of the Poconos will
bottom out in the upper 30s to low 40s overnight tonight.
Surface cold front passes during the morning hours on Friday,
resulting in decreased shower activity, but the upper trough
doesn't pass until afternoon, so shower chances look to only
slowly dwindle through the day. Additionally, the "push" of wind
behind this front doesn't look particularly strong, so
particularly the morning looks rather murky before some drier
air starts moving in during the afternoon. All-in-all, Friday
looks like a damp, dreary day, another of the plenty we've had
recently. After some sun (at least in the southern half of the
region) and temps near 50 today, Friday will also feel a little
chilly with temps mostly in the low to mid 40s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Not much happening in the short term part of the forecast. The upper
pattern favors high pressure to extend across the region and the dry
airmass in place across the Great Lakes and southern Canada advects
into the Middle Atlantic region. We have a dry forecast from Fri
night through Sunday with mostly sunny days and clear nights
expected. Temperatures will be a couple degrees above normal
Saturday then near normal Sunday.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The upper air pattern for Sunday night and into next week will feature
an unusually strong high across southern Canada and the Great Lakes.
This high slides in Quebec with a trailing ridge across the Plains
states and Great Lakes. This will limit the progression of weather
systems into our region. One system tries to undercut the ridge early
in the week and move off the Southeast coast. Earlier models were
hinting that it might move up the East coast then send some clouds
towards the area. The 12Z model runs seem to have backed away from
this, so the slight chc pops that were in some of the grids for Tue/Wed
were replaced with lower numbers.
The cool flow aloft and the prevailing surface/upper ridges will keep
temperatures cool next week with milder readings awaiting until after
Wed. Temperatures will mostly be near normal, or perhaps a few degrees
below. This means highs in the low/mid 40s for most spots and 30s
up north. Lows will mostly be in the 20s.

VFR conditions this evening will drop to IFR late tonight into
Friday morning as rain overspreads all terminals. Rain
diminishes early Friday but some showers may linger and
cigs/vsby will struggle to rise. SW winds 5-10 kts tonight
become NW on Friday 10-15 kts. High confidence overall but low
confidence on exact timing.
