.SYNOPSIS...
A slow moving front across the Mid-Atlantic will remain in place
through today. Several weak low pressure systems will travel along
it keeping unsettled conditions over the area. Weak high pressure
arrives later Friday and stays through Saturday. A coastal system
slides by Saturday night into Sunday night. High pressure arrives
for later Monday and remains into midweek. A weak clipper system may
clip part of the region during the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Initially foggy, damp, and dreary conditions this morning will abate
later today with temperatures warming well above normal in most
areas, though remaining under mostly cloudy skies.

Upper ridging will be located offshore through tonight with a
shortwave trough passing just north of our area and around the top
of the ridge early today. At the surface, weak low pressure
associated with the shortwave will lift just north of the area today
and shift offshore this evening. This low will lift a stalled
frontal boundary northeastward into southeastern Pennsylvania and
southern New Jersey into this afternoon.

As of 4 AM, the visibilities largely remain above dense fog
territory across much of the area with any dense fog mainly
localized in nature and confined to areas near the frontal boundary
in Delmarva and near the coasts. However, guidance remains
consistent with indications of decreasing visibility toward
daybreak, especially within the I-95 urban corridor, thus the Dense
Fog Advisory was extended through 10 AM. It was also expanded to
include portions of Delmarva and the southern Poconos, where
visibility has dropped early this morning. The Delmarva zones go
through 7 AM, as the warm front lifting north should improve
visibility there earlier. The foggy conditions across Pennsylvania
and New Jersey should scatter out by noon as drier air begins
filtering in from the west.

The round of rain that has been impacting portions of the area
through early this morning will exit by around daybreak or so,
although some drizzle and mist may linger through the remainder of
the morning. This will mainly affect our Pennsylvania and New Jersey
areas. PoPs quickly diminish after 7 AM to a completely dry forecast
by noon. Thereafter, the low clouds should scatter out and lift, but
skies should remain mostly cloudy in most areas. Portions of far
southern New Jersey and Delmarva well south of the frontal boundary
may experience more periods of sun than the forecast otherwise
suggests, but confidence in "mostly sunny" conditions is low.

That brings us to the high temperature forecast. A very challenging
one to say the least with a boom or bust setup rivaling that of
early spring in our region. The currently stalled frontal boundary
will lift north through this afternoon as the low pressure passes
just north of our area. A seasonable airmass with temperatures in
the 40s resides north of the boundary with well above normal
temperatures in the 60s to low 70s to the south. As is typical with
these setups, deterministic guidance varies widely in just how far
north the warm front will make it into the afternoon.

The NAM appears to be a bit of an outlier keeping the boundary
shunted the farthest southwest despite a westerly surface wind. The
latest hi-res and global guidance consensus now supports bringing
the front northeast into a corridor from Reading to the immediate
Philadelphia area to Long Beach Island. Southwest of this corridor,
the high temperature forecast was increased well into the 60s to low
70s for portions of Delmarva. Northwest of the corridor, forecast
highs are mainly in the upper 40s to 50s. Kept the Philly metro and
Reading areas in the upper 50s territory, however a farther
northeast push of the warm front will result in temperatures easily
surging into the low 60s for these areas.

For tonight, temperatures will remain unseasonably mild for most of
the area with lows mainly near 40 degrees (mid to upper 30s
near/north of I-78). Given the very wet ground, some areas of
radiation fog may develop overnight along with some lower stratus.
However, the forecast will remain dry.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The main story in the short term will be the coastal system
affecting the region Saturday Night into Monday, however it
looks at this time that this will be a mainly rain event, with
some snow possible (mainly in the higher elevations), though
significant (> 4 inch) accumulations look unlikely at this time
region-wide.

High pressure will pass to our north through the first half of
the day Saturday, helping us stay mostly dry for a brief period.
Afternoon high temperatures for Saturday look to still be above
normal in the upper 40s to low 50s under partly to mostly
cloudy skies.

Rain chances will begin to increase late afternoon and into the
evening Saturday as our next system develops across the southeastern
US and pushes a broad area of low pressure north and east across the
Mid Atlantic with a secondary low forming near the VA/NC border and
tracking offshore. This will bring a period of light to moderate
rainfall across most of the area Saturday night through Sunday.
Latest guidance points towards some potential for wintry weather in
the high elevations of northern NJ and the Poconos, but the current
low track is not favorable for sufficiently cold air to advect in
during the day to allow for robust snowfall. Forecast soundings show
a well-saturated vertical profile, but with much of the low-levels
hovering right around the freezing point at best across the Poconos
and higher terrain. As a result, the snow-liquid ratios will be
rather poor, resulting in a higher likelihood of a light rain/snow
wintry mix and leaving little snowfall accumulation to be expected
during the day. All other locations along I-80 south are forecasted
to remain all rain through Sunday. Afternoon high temperatures will
be in the low to upper 40s with low to mid 30s for the Poconos and
higher elevations of northern NJ.

Heading out of the weekend and into next week, models start off in
good general agreement with a surface low tracking east-
northeastward from the mid-Atlantic coast on Sunday to well
offshore, southeast and east of the 'benchmark' south of Cape Cod
Sunday night into Monday morning. The low looks relatively weak
initially as it tracks offshore, and only deepens to perhaps 990-995
mb as it pulls quickly away. The associated upper-level trough will
be attempting to deepen and amplify as it crosses the East Coast
Sunday night, but generally looks too progressive to result in a
stronger coastal storm closer to shore. This is in part due to
shortwaves approaching upstream, acting as 'kickers', and
effectively pushing our coastal low quickly out to sea before it has
a chance to turn up the coast and/or intensify. It is possible that
this model simulated evolution changes over the next few days as we
get closer to Sunday/Monday, but at this point there is very little
guidance to suggest otherwise.

What all this means for our sensible weather is likely some light
rain with some snow up around the Poconos or far northwest NJ Sunday
night, changing to snow from northwest to southeast as the
precipitation ends around daybreak Monday morning. Without cold air
in place to begin with, we will have to wait for the storm to
intensify and draw in colder air from the northwest for the
transition to snow to take place...but that air will also be
progressively drier. That pattern favors little more than a dusting
or maybe just a few wet flakes along the coastal plain of NJ, with
just rain farther south. Looking at some of the NBM snow
probabilities, they are not enthused for much snow. Probabilities of
snowfall greater than an inch are around 20-40% in the higher
elevations of Carbon/Monroe and northwestern NJ.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The long term period overall looks rather benign with temperatures
right around normal. A clipper system will try to move in during the
middle of next week, but guidance has been all over the place with
the track as it dives in from the Great Lakes. At most, any
rain/snow looks to be light if it even does clip our region, but
nothing looks impactful at this time.

Getting into the day by day forecast, a mid-level ridge will pass
overhead Monday Night into Tuesday. An area of high pressure will
nudge in from the north, moving southeastward off the New England
coast by Tuesday Night  The result will be quiet weather and
temperatures Monday and Tuesday Night in the mid to upper 20s, with
low 30s in the usual warmer spots. Highs Tuesday will generally be
in the low to mid 40s with some peeks of sun.

A trough digs down from the Upper Midwest Tuesday Night, with a weak
low diving southeast towards the Piedmont region. Both the 00z
GFS/ECMWF take these features south of the region with the 00z GEM
taking a more northward track, which would bring some precip to the
region. Kept mentionable PoPs out for now for the Tuesday
Night/Wednesday period, but it is not out of the question for some
light rain/snow showers. However, nothing looks overly impactful at
this time. As the weak surface low moves off the coast, most of the
guidance takes it harmlessly offshore while a few ensemble members
bring it up the coast. The likelihood of this happening remains low
however and the mid to late next week period should be dry.
Temperatures will hover around normal for Wednesday/Thursday (low to
mid 40s).

.AVIATION /10Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE,
KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...

Through 15Z...Prevailing IFR and LIFR conditions in fog, mist,
drizzle, and periods of rain. Visibility is anticipated to lower to
LIFR or VLIFR toward 12Z at some terminals. Easterly winds 5-10 kts.
Moderate confidence overall.

Rest of Today...Generally prevailing IFR conditions at 15Z with
improvement to MVFR forecast for most terminals toward 18Z. Some
brief improvement to VFR is possible after 18Z at RDG/ILG/MIV/ACY.
Initially variable winds will settle out of the west after 18Z near
5-10 kts. Moderate confidence overall, but lower confidence on exact
timing of improving conditions.

Tonight...MVFR to IFR conditions likely with areas of fog
development and low stratus anticipated. Winds favoring a northwest
direction 5 kts or less. Moderate confidence overall, low confidence
in details.

Outlook...

Saturday through Saturday Night...VFR to start but conditions
lowering to MVFR/IFR with rain moving in by the afternoon,
continuing into the evening. Northerly winds through Saturday will
become more east/northeasterly on Saturday Night, around 5-10 kt.
Moderate confidence.

Sunday through Sunday Night...MVFR/IFR conditions likely with rain
and perhaps some snow mixed in on Sunday Night. East/Northeast winds
around 10-20 kt with gusts around 20-25 kt. Moderate confidence.

Monday through Monday Night...Sub-VFR conditions to start with
periods of rain/snow likely. Conditions should lift back to VFR
later in the day as precipitation moves out. Northerly winds around
10 kt decreasing to 5-10 kt overnight. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday...VFR. South/Southeast winds around 5-10 kt. Moderate
confidence.

.MARINE...
The Marine Dense Fog Advisory will continue through this morning
with low visibilities (1 NM or less, locally 1/4 NM or less) as mild
and humid air moves over the colder waters. North of Manasquan, seas
may near 5 feet for a time this morning with wind gusts near 25 kts
possible.

Periods of rain, drizzle, and fog will persist through much of this
morning before diminishing. Southwest winds 10-15 kts shifting west
to northwest near 5-10 kts later today and tonight.

Outlook...

Saturday through Saturday Night...No marine headlines expected.
North/Northwest winds during the day on Saturday around 10 kt will
become East/Northeasterly around 10-15 kt on Saturday Night. Seas 2
to 4 feet.

Sunday through Sunday Night...SCA conditions expected with gales
possible. East/Northeast winds around 20-30 kt with gusts nearing
gale force. Seas 4 to 8 feet.

Monday...SCA conditions expected. North/northeast winds around 20-25
kt and gusts up to 30 kt. Seas 4 to 8 feet.

Monday Night...SCA conditions expected. North/northeast winds around
10-15 kt and seas 4 to 7 feet.

Tuesday...SCA conditions possible. North/Northeast winds in the
morning will become more south/southeasterly, hovering around 10 kt.
Seas 4 to 7 feet.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A coastal storm will slide up the coast Saturday Night into
Monday bringing a period of onshore east/northeast flow. Water
will begin to pile up on Saturday Night, with minor coastal
flooding possible with the daytime high tide on Sunday along
the Atlantic coast and within the Delaware Bay. The back bays in
Ocean County and Sussex County, DE could see minor tidal
flooding with the daytime high tide on Monday.

At this time, coastal flooding is not expected within the tidal
Delaware River or Chesapeake Bay.

.CLIMATE...
Near record breaking mild low temperatures are forecast through
today. Record warmest low temperatures for January 25th were
set at three sites (55N, ACY, and MPO), with one site (GED)
tying its record warmest low. Some record warm low temperatures
may be in jeopardy for today, along with the record high
temperatures at the Atlantic City Marina and Georgetown.
