Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1251 PM EDT Tue Apr 9 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered to our south will remain there through
today. A weak system moves through tonight and Wednesday with a
front draped across our region. A strong cold front crosses our
area Thursday night into early Friday. High pressure then
builds to our south later Saturday through Sunday, however a
weak cold front may move through later Sunday into Monday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Surface high pressure centered over the southeastern US will
allow for warm air to surge across most of the region today.
Temperatures have already risen well into the low to mid 70s in
many area as of 1 PM. Along with a decent amount of filtered
sunshine, we can expect widespread afternoon highs well into the
mid to upper 70s. Sea/bay/river breezes will keep some coastal
locations cooler with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Cirrus
clouds will increase through the day as a stationary boundary
gradually inches closer to the region ahead of our next system
tonight.
An occluding low over Southern Ontario will help increase S to SW
flow across the region as the weak stationary lingers loosely across
the Mid-Atlantic. Moisture advection increases tonight as a
result, helping form an area of showers that will move into the
region this evening across Delmarva and after midnight elsewhere.
At the moment, best chance for showers will remain across
eastern Pennsylvania. A few rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled
out either as showers move in overnight. With warm air advection
and clouds in place, temperatures will only cool off into the
upper 40s to mid 50s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Strengthening surface low pressure is forecast to be centered
over/near eastern TX Wednesday. With time, this low pressure system
and its associated fronts will strengthen while the low moves
northeastwards through the Mississippi River Valley then up to the
Great Lakes region. By the end of the Thursday night period, this
low pressure system will look to be centered over the Great Lakes
region as a fairly strong cyclone (i.e., sub-990 hPa) while
beginning to occlude. This surface cyclone, its associated fronts and
impacts will be the focus of the short term. While the cyclone it
itself should remain centered to our west through its life cycle, the
region will be impacted by its pressure field and frontal
boundaries.
The region will already remain unsettled Wednesday into the start of
Wednesday night as a weaker system continues to propagate through
and impact the region. During the Wednesday night time frame, strong
warm air advection will begin as the main warm front lifts
northwards and looks to pass through late Wednesday night or early
Thursday. Thereafter, the region looks to remain in the warm sector
for much of Thursday into Thursday night as the strong cold front
approaches with time. Strong cold front looks to begin to cross
through late Thursday night, perhaps not finishing crossing through
until Friday morning.
The weaker system Wednesday into the start of Wednesday night should
not bring much in the way of impacts; just a chance of some light
but fairly widespread rain showers. With the main warm front
approach and lift through, more widespread light to moderate rain
should be anticipated Wednesday night and into Thursday. However,
rainfall amounts from this should not amount to much, maybe around
0.25 inches at best. Rain will increase in intensity and coverage
from the west Thursday afternoon into Thursday night as the cold
front approaches. We will need to continue to watch this cold front
progression as we go further in time; the later Thursday into Friday
time frame will be the main concern of the forecast. Rainfall wise,
an additional 0.5-1.5 inches of rain could fall Thursday afternoon
through Thursday night. There is a chance for some embedded
thunderstorms and quick downpours in some locations from this rain,
leading to flooding concerns especially for poor drainage and urban
areas. Forecast PW values remain relatively high for the time of
year. WPC maintains our more northwestern and west areas in a SLIGHT
risk for excessive rainfall with the rest of the region in a
MARGINAL risk. Winds will pick up during the day Thursday and
increase with time. Winds are expected to peak Thursday night,
diminishing some Friday but remaining strong overall. 40-50 mph wind
gusts are possible Thursday night.
&&
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Strong low pressure centered over or just north of the Great Lakes
region Friday will continue to push to the northeast and occlude with
time. As this occurs, surface high pressure will build to our south
moving eastward with time. This surface high pressure will look to
shift offshore of the southeastern CONUS around the time frame of
Sunday, which may invite some weak disturbances to move through our
region. A weak warm front may move through Sunday with a weak cold
front for Monday before surface high pressure possibly builds back
in.
Overall, the region should remain unsettled Friday into Friday night
with some rain showers and instability present. Most of guidance
continues to suggest a secondary cold associated with the strong low
pressure to our northwest will cross through Friday/Friday night.
Things could even remain slightly unsettled into Saturday with some
shortwave energy present despite the region feeling the influence of
surface high pressure to the south. Surface high pressure should win
out for Saturday night though before it shifts too far offshore of
the southeastern CONUS Sunday. Unsettled weather could return Sunday
and Monday with the weak system and associated boundaries.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With the new moon occurring earlier Monday afternoon, the
previous high tide cycle is expected to be the overall peak of
coastal flooding for many locations. However, as we head into
Tuesday and Wednesday, lingering astronomically driven coastal
flooding is possible.
Moderate tidal flooding has not occurred along the upper tidal
Delaware River with the ongoing high tide cycle. However,
guidance continues to suggest moderate tidal flooding will occur
with the next overnight high tide cycle along the upper tidal
Delaware River. As a result of this, the Coastal Flood Warning
was extended earlier to cover Tuesday night's overnight high
tide cycle. Given what occurred with the current high tide
cycle, confidence is not firm that moderate coastal flooding
will be witnessed for the next overnight high tide cycle. The
Coastal Flood Warning may be replaced with a Coastal Flood
Advisory later, especially if guidance trends down.
Minor coastal flooding is still expected with the next few high
tide cycles along the Altantic oceanfront, Delaware Bay, and
lower tidal Delaware River. Extended all Coastal Flood
Advisories earlier 24 hours. Some widespread minor coastal
flooding is anticipated for some sites with the evening high
tide cycle. Other sites may only see some spotty minor with this
evenings high tide. For the most part, minor coastal flooding,
even spotty minor, is not anticipated for this upcoming mornings
high tide cycle, though a site or two may touch spotty minor.
We do not expect any tidal flooding for our Chesapeake Bay
sites.
