Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1252 PM EST Tue Mar 5 2024 .SYNOPSIS... A weak low pressure system will continue to track northward through the region today. A stronger low pressure system will impact the area Wednesday through early Thursday bringing yet another round of rain. High pressure builds in on Friday before another low pressure system approaches the region Saturday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... The center of the weakening low pressure is over northern Delmarva and southeast New Jersey. Rain bands associated with this low will continue to lift north through southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and rain tapers off from south to north through this afternoon. Areas of fog and drizzle will prevail in its wake. Event total rainfall amounts should be near a half inch in most areas, but locally up to 0.75" is possible in some spots. Highs today will be mainly in the low to mid 50s. Breezy east to northeast winds this morning will diminish and become variable with the surface low in the vicinity. Winds may settle out of the southwest in some areas later in the day near 5-10 mph, then become light from the south to southeast overnight. Skies may scatter out a bit into this evening, but mostly cloudy skies and some fog development are forecast across the entire area (especially near the coasts). As today's system departs into tonight, we should get a roughly 18-24 hour break in precipitation ahead of the Wednesday system and we've maintained a largely dry forecast for tonight with lows in the 40s. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... Attention turns to the next system bringing widespread rain chances to the region. This system looks to bring widespread rain amounts of 0.5 to 2 inches to the region, primarily Wednesday into Wednesday evening, though light rain may linger into the day on Thursday. With the latest guidance, there appears to be a trend to slightly further east with rain amounts. If this trend continues, it will be good news so far as limiting the flooding threat across our region (at least with this round). Primary concern for the flooding risk at this point is in coastal areas, especially around the times of high tide as the tide coming in could exacerbate any freshwater drainage. That being said, will watch to see if this trend in the guidance continues and what impact that may have with subsequent river model guidance. At this point though, confidence isn't high enough to issue a flood watch. As far as other hazards, latest model soundings don't depict hardly any instability (surface based or elevated). Consequently, left out any mention of thunder from the forecast. This should also help to keep rain rates lower, and thus also somewhat limit the flood risk. One aspect that seems to have a lot of differences between models and ensemble member is how quickly the rain will move out of the region. Some guidance has a deeper and sharper mid and upper level trough that trails behind the surface low. Consequently, keeps light rain through the day on Thursday. This is in stark contrast to other guidance, which has a weaker trough and depicts the rain moving out on Wednesday night. Regardless, even if rain lingers, rain rates and amounts for the late Wednesday night into Thursday period would be very light and thus not a significant impact on the flooding risk. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... We'll start this period with dry conditions before the next low pressure system moves in on Saturday, likely to bring another round of widespread rain. Friday is shaping up to be a fairly decent day amid the barrage of rainy systems, with highs mostly in the 50s and partly cloudy skies. This will be attributed to shortwave ridging passing across the region and surface high pressure briefly ridging down into the area from the northeast. For the weekend time period, a surface low is expected to develop in response to a deep mid an upper level trough sliding over the central U.S.. As mentioned by the previous shift, there remain some big differences between guidance in details of this system. Including most notably rain amounts and rain rates, which of course means the flood risk is uncertain at this time. That being said, soils across the region should be close to saturated by the time this system arrives thanks to the rain earlier in the week. Consequently, we are in a marginal (1 out of 4) risk for excessive rain/flooding in the Saturday time period. One area where there appears to be less disagreement is in temperatures and precipitation type. This looks predominantly a mild system, with our region staying mostly in the warm sector until Sunday when most of the precipitation should be moving out. As a result, precipitation should be predominantly rain. The one possible exception is if precip lingers a bit later on Sunday in the higher terrain of the Poconos and NW NJ, there could be some wintry precip mixing in. Dry conditions are likely for Monday, but cold air advection will mean Monday could be the coldest day of the next 7 days. && .AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Rest of today...IFR/LIFR conditions in RA/DZ/BR. E winds generally around 10 kt with gusts up to 20 kt, becoming NW, then SW 5 to 10 kt as low pressure lifts north through the region. Winds will otherwise become LGT/VRB. Moderate confidence overall. Tonight...Some improvement in conditions is possible early with low ceilings scattering out a bit, however IFR ceilings and some fog development are currently anticipated much of the night. Winds 5 kts or less favoring a south to southeast direction. Low confidence. Outlook... Wednesday...Prolonged MVFR or IFR conditions possible with rain and low ceilings.
