Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA 1140 AM EST Thu Jan 11 2024 .SYNOPSIS... A weak system moving to the northwest of the area will bring the risk for scattered rain or snow showers today, mainly across the northern half of the region. A much larger system will bring rain, snow and wind Friday and Saturday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/... KEY MESSAGES: - Light snow or rain showers possible today across northern half of forecast area. Light accumulations. ----------------------------------------------------------------- A shortwave trough will continue to swing through the area through midday. Any precipitation that accompanies this wave will be light and confined mainly to the northern half of the forecast area. NBM probabilities are low for measurable precipitation with the wave, coming in around 30 to 40% during the morning hours. Any precipitation that falls this morning will be in the form of light snow showers. Again, NBM probabilities remain low for >0.1 inches mainly 20 to 30% with some higher numbers in the I-80 corridor of 50 to 60% So any mention of accumulations will be focused across the far north and even this will be light. With light snow mainly in the north, no impacts are expected across the area. Adjusted temperatures up a tad to address the rare sunshine today. Otherwise, the rest of the forecast is good to go for the rest of the day. The shortwave will exit quickly this afternoon and a weak surface low will cross the northern Great Lakes behind it. The best forcing south of the low will be over the I-80 corridor and this area will again become the focus for additional snow showers this afternoon. Forecast soundings are indicate that rain drops mixing in with the snow showers is not completely out of the question this afternoon and the NBM PType probabilities are showing a small chance of this as well. NBM probabilities for >0.1 inches this afternoon lower to around 30 to 40% focused north of I-80. With the passage of the second shortwave trough this afternoon, a period of cold air advection is anticipated. This will keep the stratocu in place. Today's highs will be very similar to those we saw on Wednesday. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY/... KEY MESSAGES: - An impactful system Friday into Saturday will bring additional winter, wind, and flooding concerns. ----------------------------------------------------------------- A weak surface high will cross the area tonight and warm air advection will ensue ahead of the next larger system. Should see skies clear from southwest to northeast tonight as the warmer air spreads across the region. Another large and energetic system will approach the region from the west on Friday. Still seeing some timing issues on when the rain from the storm will begin to impact the region. Latest NBM probs hold the leading edge of the rain shield off until early afternoon in Ohio, reaching PA by late in the afternoon or early evening. Probs are approaching 100% for the entire region by 00Z Saturday. With the slower onset of precipitation Friday, the threat for mixed precipitation in the far north and ridges is greatly reduced. As the system moves across the upper Midwest on Friday, winds aloft will increase and the surface pressure gradient will rapidly tighten. The threat for strong wind gusts will ramp up Friday morning and through the afternoon. NBM probabilities of gusts >50mph increase to over 80% Friday afternoon in the ridges. Further west in the lower elevations not seeing as high of probabilities, but they will increase over the rest of W PA as the afternoon progresses to 30 to 40%. So the biggest concern at this time for Friday is the wind threat. A high wind watch may be needed. As far as rainfall on Friday, it looks manageable. Latest NBM mean forecast shows about 0.20 to 0.30 Friday afternoon/evening. When looking closer at the probabilities for these numbers the highest are over ohio about 80 to 90%, but fall off over the rest of the region to 40 to 50%. With the strong warm air advection ahead of the system Friday, temperatures should rise 5 to 10 degrees above normal. The deepening low will remain north and west of the region Friday night and Saturday. Rainfall will continue Friday night, but should rapidly taper off as the night progresses as a large upper level dry slot will spread across the region. Strong cold air advection will begin late Friday night as arctic air wraps around the southern flank of the upper low. Cold air advection snow showers are possible late Friday night and through the day on Saturday. Lake enhanced and upslope snow showers will not be a concern on Saturday as winds will remain out of the southwest. So the cold air will actually be coming into the area from the west-southwest rather than from the northwest. The biggest concern Friday night and Saturday remain the threat for strong wind gusts. The threat for more widespread strong gusts is higher late Friday night and through the day on Saturday due to the cold air advection. A large chunk of the region will see 60-70% probabilities of 50mph or higher late Friday night and Saturday. Wind headlines look like a good possibility through this period as well. Falling temperatures are anticipated all day Saturday. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... KEY MESSAGES: - Cold air returns to end the forecast period. ___________________________________________________________ On the back side of this disturbance, an intrusion of Arctic air is more likely. Low temperatures behind the cold front are forecast in the teens Saturday and Sunday night, potentially dipping into the single digits come Tuesday morning. Additional snow chances will approach from the south Monday into Tuesday, but impacts from this storm will depend on track and intensity: both of which are highly uncertain at this time. NBM high temperatures next Tuesday range from as low as the single digits on the low end (10th percentile) to the upper 20s and lower 30s on the high end (90th percentile). Considerable model spread in precipitation and temperature is related to uncertainty in the position and amplitude of an eastern trough. Nonetheless, the region is favored to remain below average through day seven. CPC outlooks show this cold pattern may persist through the mid-to- late January. && .AVIATION /16Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Scattered light snow showers linger across the northern half of the area today. Currently seeing MVFR ceilings at all terminals, per latest obs. Areas north of I-80 can expect to stay socked in under MVFR cigs (locally IFR at times) throughout the TAF period. Farther south, at terminals along/south of I-70, some minor improvement and a few breaks in the clouds is possible during mid-morning hours before filling back in during the afternoon. Additional clearing and improvement to VFR is expected for a greater percentage of the area, generally south of I-80, after 03Z tonight. Overcast mid and high clouds overspread the area towards the tail end of the TAF period as the next weather system approaches. Southwest winds have relaxed some overnight, but are expected to become breezy again late this morning through this afternoon, with gusts to around 25 knots possible at most terminals. Winds then diminish again tonight and shift to easterly by daybreak on Friday. .OUTLOOK... Strong low pressure will once again move across the area Friday through the weekend, bringing rain and restrictions to the region during that time. Strong wind gusts and a period of LLWS are also expected.
