.SYNOPSIS...
Drier conditions return today. Snow will return to the Cascades
during the day Saturday and spread eastward Saturday night and
Sunday. Heavy snow accumulations are expected on the mountain
passes. The weather pattern for next week is trending wetter with
potential for several rounds of precipitation.

.DISCUSSION...
...HEAVY SNOW ON MOUNTAIN PASSES THIS WEEKEND. FIRST LOWLAND SNOW
POSSIBLE FOR SOME AREAS...

Today and tonight: The remnants of our resident upper-level
trough will track west to east through the region today. A few
light showers will be found across the mountains of NE WA and N ID
with minimal QPF. Areas of stratus has been developing through
the night and will continue to expand across much of SE WA and the
lower ID Panhandle. Weak ascent through this moisture will result
in areas of drizzle or light rain at times with most areas
receiving less than a 0.01". The most favored areas for showers
and light QPF will be in the Blue Mountains, Camas Prairie, and
Central Panhandle Mountains courtesy of a light upsloping
northwest flow. These areas will carry the highest probabilities
for measurable QPF of a few hundredths to up to a tenth. Dry
conditions and increasing sunshine will greet folks in Central WA
as shortwave ridging noses inland. The shortwave ridge will
continue to progress eastward overnight with clearing skies and
light winds. Temperatures will cool into the 20s with areas of
fog, some locally dense heading into Saturday morning. /sb

Saturday to Monday: Overall, there were not many changes with the
evolution of the winter storm expected to impact the Inland
Northwest this weekend with this forecast package.

Mountains: A significant winter storm is expected to bring 1 to 3
feet of snow to the Cascade passes starting Saturday afternoon.
Overnight into Sunday, warm air advection will briefly shift
precipitation to rain at Stevens Pass, but a strong frontal passage
will return snow by early Sunday afternoon. A Winter Storm Watch has
not been issued for Lookout Pass (Idaho/Montana border) as snowfall
rates are projected to remain low enough to avoid major travel
disruptions.

Following the fronts passage on Sunday, a Puget Sound Convergence
Zone is likely to form, persisting into Monday morning. At Stevens
Pass, gusty post-frontal winds combined with moderate to heavy snow
could result in localized blizzard conditions Sunday evening (20%
chance of wind gusts exceeding 35 mph). Although the surrounding
mountain peaks provide partial shelter, challenging travel is still
anticipated Sunday evening. Mountain snow showers will continue
through Monday due to moist, unstable westerly flow.

Lowlands: Lowland areas are likely to see their first snowfall
Saturday evening and overnight. Light to moderate precipitation will
spread across the Inland Northwest after dark, initially falling as
snow above 1500 feet. However, strong warm air advection will raise
snow levels by Sunday morning, turning areas below 3000 feet to
rain. The most pronounced snowfall gradient will occur between
Spokane and the Newport area, where warmer air will take longer to
arrive. In Spokane, snow is expected to accumulate only on grassy
surfaces, with roads staying too warm according to the METRo model.
Probabilities for 2 inches or more of snow are highest north of
Spokane (Spokane: 0%, Sandpoint: 15%, Deer Park: 15%, Republic: 30%,
Newport: 40%, Metaline: 75%).

Rain and snow showers are expected to persist Monday across eastern
Washington and north Idaho, supported by moist, unstable flow within
the cold upper-level trough. /DB

Tuesday through Friday: There have been significant changes with
the ensemble model packages regarding the forecast for next week.
For the last few days, 80% of the guidance was supporting a strong
high amplitude ridge with stable weather conditions, light winds,
and potential for air stagnation. The last few runs have started
to migrate toward a much different direction featuring a low
amplitude ridge and potential for several low pressure system to
bring rounds of precipitation, some which could fall as lowland
snow, especially with the first one Tuesday night into Wednesday.
The only confidence for a dry day comes on Tuesday as one system
is departing and another approaching the coast. How the next 3-5
days plays out carries moderate uncertainty. We have seen a
drastic shift in the medium range ensemble solutions toward a wet
and unsettled weather pattern! To give some perspective, let's
examine the 100 member ensemble for WED (Nov 20). 24 hours ago,
80% of the members supported a high amplitude; 12 hours ago this
decreased to 30%; 3 hours ago (the most recent run), this
decreased to 8%.

So now the question is, how flat and displaced east will the ridge
setup. Yes, it is still present but does not have a lot of
support to amplify into BC as advertised 24 hours ago. Meanwhile,
a healthy plume of subtropical moisture riding up its western
flank will now have the opportunity to spill inland bringing
periods of precipitation, potentially enhanced with the passage of
several low pressure systems. More and more individual members
are starting to converge toward a light to moderate snow event for
Tuesday night into Wednesday with the latest NBM probs for 3"
between 20-50% across the Upper Basin and northern valleys for any
elevations above 1500 feet. The pattern is right for snow in the
East Slopes (no rain shadow) but a lot will depend how cold the
air mass will become in the wake of Monday's weather system to
really fine tune those snow levels. Stay tuned, a lot could change
between now and then but start to prepare mentally for
potentially unsettled weather pattern next week. /sb

.AVIATION...
18Z TAFS: Mixing has allowed fog develop over GEG-SFF-COE and
northern valleys. MVFR conditions are expected at KPUW and KLWS
into the afternoon as light northwesterly flow in the boundary
layer should pool moisture into these terminals. Expecting a
similar situation leading up to 12z tomorrow where not much fog
forms but the boundary layer moisture is modeled to deepen ahead
of cirrus cloud cover for KGEG-KSFF.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS:
Confidence is low with the fog and low stratus forecast at TAFs
sites this morning and later tonight. Model guidance is sporadic
with coverage of low cloud cover and if this will result in low
stratus or fog.
