.SYNOPSIS...
A vigorous storm system on Monday will bring locally heavy snow
accumulations to the mountains of north Idaho and to the Cascades.
Damaging wind gusts will be possible for portions of Central
Washington with breezy to windy conditions elsewhere. A drier
more stable weather pattern is expected Wednesday through Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Monday Night: A weak short wave passing through
today combined with low level upslope west to northwest flow will
generate showers mainly along the Cascade crest ID Panhandle, and
SE Washington. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place through
10 AM for Stevens and Lookout Passes. An abundance of boundary
layer moisture left in the wake of yesterday's rain will lead to a
continued increase in fog and stratus over NE Washington into the
ID Panhandle this morning. Tonight a brief break arrives ahead of
a vigorous low pressure system.
A low pressure system rapidly intensifies to near 988 mb near the
Central BC coast Monday morning, sending a frontal boundary across
the region from west to east on Monday. Precipitation onset is
shown by the models to begin near or just after sunrise for the
East Slopes of the Cascades into the northern valleys. With low
temperatures dropping to near freezing tonight, some areas may
begin with snow. Currently stratus is favored tonight for the
valleys of NE WA/N Idaho which may keep lows in the mid 30s,
while the Methow Valley and Republic area stand a better chance to
drop to freezing with precipitation starting as snow Monday
morning. But with the deep low tracking into British Columbia this
will induce southerly winds which should keep the threat of lower
elevation snow short lived as snow levels rise with valley
accumulations less than 1 inch. Following the quick moving frontal
passage, unstable northwest flow develops favoring snow persisting
in the mountains along the Cascade crest and Idaho Panhandle. A
Winter Storm Watch remains in place for Washington, Stevens, and
Lookout Passes with heavy snow amounts possible.
The other story will be the winds. Following the frontal passage,
850mb winds ramp up significantly over Central WA. The GFS and
ECMWF indicate 850mb winds increasing to 50-65 kts from Chelan
county onto the Waterville Plateau down into the Moses Lake area.
The big question is how much of these winds will mix to the
surface? With afternoon sunbreaks, and several of the high res
models showing pockets of these higher gusts mixing down, there is
concern for at least isolated damaging wind gusts of 50-65 MPH. A
High Wind Watch has been issued. JW
Tuesday through Sunday: A cooling trend through Wednesday is
expected as decent northerly flow pattern will push cold airmass
over the region. It is being supported by a strengthening ridge
pattern along the coast. Any precip activity will decrease through
Tuesday. Overnight lows for Tuesday into Wednesday will be the
coldest. Areas of the northern valleys could see temperatures into
the mid teens. The rest of the region will be in the 20s.
Temperatures will begin to moderate through the rest of the period.
Highs will be in the 40s to low 50s. Overnight lows will be in the
20s to low 30s. Models are bringing a system through the region over
the weekend. The trends are showing a poorly organized system than
the early week one. It is showing mainly mountain showers with
little over the Basin. /JDC

.AVIATION...
12Z TAFS: Recent rainfall has left a moist boundary layer with
low clouds covering NE Washington into the ID Panhandle. For KGEG
nearby web cams show fog in close proximity. Light upslope
boundary layer southwest winds is expected to result in VLIFR
conditions moving into KGEG between 12-13z. Elsewhere over NE WA/N
Idaho a mix of IFR/MVFR stratus has been observed and expected to
continue through the morning. A weak wave passing through today
will bring a chance of showers mainly to SE Washington into the ID
Panhandle. VFR conditions look to prevail in the lee of the
Cascades including at KEAT- KEPH- KMWH.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS:
There is high confidence of stratus bringing MVFR and IFR
conditions to NE Washington and the ID Panhandle through the
morning with gradual lifting into the afternoon. There is lower
confidence with precise ceilings and visibility this morning at
KGEG/KSFF due to a mix of fog and stratus layers in the area. But
with area web cams just south of KGEG indicating fog along with a
light southwest wind, the 12z TAF forecast went towards the
pessimistic side. JW
