Temperatures Saturday will remain mild with highs in the 40s and
low 50s. Clouds will increase Saturday as chances for light rain
and snow develop over the Cascades and mountains of north Idaho.
The passage of a strong cold front late in the day Sunday will
produce wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph in central and eastern
Washington and heavy snow for the Cascades and mountains of north
Idaho. More heavy mountain snow will likely occur Tuesday night
through Thursday.

Saturday and Saturday night: Atmospheric moisture being transported
into the region under persistent northwest flow aloft will litter
skies with mid and high level clouds today but deliver little in
the way of precipitation. The northern Cascades and Idaho
Panhandle will have the greatest probabilities to intercept this
higher moisture and squeeze out a few hundredths with QPF amounts
expected to be near a tenth of an inch or less. Snow levels will
be around 4000 feet. Temperatures will be similar to Friday
peaking in the 40s and 50s across most communities. There will be
a noticeably uptick in winds compared to Friday as the cross-cwa
pressure gradient tightens. West and southwest winds with speeds
of 10-18 mph will gusts 20-30 mph across the Basin, Palouse, West
Plains, and over exposed ridgetops. Locally stronger winds will be
found on the Waterville Plateau where gusts of 35 mph will
common. The good news, we are experiencing little in the way of
fog this morning due to the combination of high clouds and
steadier winds.

Sunday - Monday: The weather will become a bit more energetic during
this period as the ridge of high pressure retrogrades into the E
Pacific and a robust upper-level trough swings into the Pac NW.
This will usher strong cold front through the Inland Northwest
bringing periods of snow, strong winds, and 10 to 15 degree drop
in temperatures. There is good agreement amongst the short-range
models for the pattern change leading to moderate to high
confidence. As the trough settles in Monday, the air mass will
become much colder and unstable. Embedded vorticity lobes will
provide forcing for clusters of snow showers outside
orographically forced regions. It will be tough to accumulate
lowland snow during the daytime but localized burst of moderate
snow or graupel could create short-lived travel impacts. Any
showers Monday night could create additional slick travel concerns
in the lower elevations.

Impacts: Those looking to travel across the Cascade mountain passes
and Lookout Pass into Montana should be prepared for winter
travel. Snowfall rates in the Cascades have a 90-100% chance to
reach 1"/hour rates Sunday morning and afternoon. This will come
with wind gusts near 35 mph potentially creating whiteout
conditions at times. Those traveling across the Cascades should be
prepared for potential delays, stay up to date on conditions, and
check those winter weather survival kits before heading out.
Lookout Pass carries a 60-70% for snowfall rates reaching 1"/hour
mainly Sunday afternoon and evening. While snow amounts are not as
impressive as the Cascades, these rates could create significant
impacts to travel and potential delays. The magnitude of the
incoming winds suggest potential for isolated to power outages and
tree damage. Grounds are quite saturated from the recent mild
weather which could tip the scale toward local scattered tree
damage vs isolated though this comes with low confidence. The
winds will create challenging cross winds along north to south
oriented highways/sections of I-90, and make for dangerous
conditions on area lakes.

Wind: The strongest winds will arrive Sunday afternoon and continue
into early Monday morning. Initial winds will pickup ahead of the
cold front with a general south to southwest direction. By 1PM
Sunday, sustained winds will be on the order of 15-25 mph with
local areas closing in on 30 mph. Gusts will be varying from 30-40
mph. Winds will continue to pickup by 4-5PM and remain strong
through the evening as the cold front presses through from
northwest to southeast. This will bring our most opportune time
for wind gusts 40-50 mph. Strong cold air advection behind the
cold front will keep winds strong into Monday morning but speeds
will slowly come down and the gust potential will fall closer to
30 mph.

Snow: The period of snow that will be most impactful will be Sunday
morning and afternoon when snowfall rates will be near 1"hour or
more. Snow rates will come down Sunday night and Monday in the
Cascades but snow showers will continue. In the Idaho Panhandle,
snowfall rates will be highest late Sunday afternoon through early
Monday morning. Current forecast calls for 1-2 feet of snow at
Stevens Pass and around 1 foot at Lookout Pass. NBM gives Stevens
Pass a 100% for a foot and Lookout Pass a 40% chance. Snow showers
will expand into all elevations on Monday with low probabilities
for accumulations yet the pattern is more chaotic and driven by
clusters of showers with lower confidence for amounts for any
particular area. /sb

Tuesday through Friday...An active pattern continues into the middle
and end of next week with mountain snow, sloppy lower elevation snow
and windy Basin. The pressure gradient loosens slightly as the
trough begins to flatten out into a more zonal flow. Winds will
increase throughout the day, with gusts of 30 to 35 mph in the
Columbia Basin, Spokane/CDA, and Palouse/LC Valley as the pressure
gradient begins to tighten again. High temperatures will also be the
coolest Tuesday, with highs 5 to 10 degrees below normal (back into
the mid to upper 30s). Snow will increase in intensity in the
Cascades Tuesday afternoon, spreading east overnight. The lower
elevations could see sloppy light snow accumulations as temperatures
drop overnight below freezing. Snow totals overnight near Spokane
will be a trace to half an inch, increasing towards CDA where 2 to 3
inches is expected. The colder valleys to the north could also see 2
to 4 inches, with localized higher amounts. Stevens Pass will also
see an additional 18 to 24 inches with this system between Tuesday
and Tuesday night, with over an inch an hour expected at times.
Lookout won't see quite as much with this system but will still see
an additional 8 to 12 inches.

While the flow continues to flatten starting Wednesday, the pressure
gradient tightens yet again as another trough drops down the
Canadian coast, which also positions the jet stream directly above
the PacNW. The combination of these two will create not one but two
blustery days (Wed and Thur). These winds are currently forecasted
in the 45 to 50 mph, with a stray gust to 55 mph not out of the
question from daytime Wednesday through Thursday night. This is an
increase from the the forecast 24 hours ago as models continue trend
stronger. Moisture continues to flow over the PacNW through this
period, with additional heavy snowfall over the higher terrain.
Between Wednesday and Friday, the snow will be measured in feet, not
inches with Stevens Pass seeing near 2 feet and Lookout forecasted
between 1 and 2 feet. Skiers and snowboarders will love the
additional mountain snow as the season will continue on a little
longer. Temperatures will slowly trend back towards normal with the
zonal flow with highs in the lower elevations in the low 40s. The
lower elevations because of this will mainly see rain with a
possible rain/snow mix overnight. Best to keep an eye on your
forecast for Wed through Fri with the strong winds and heavy
mountain snow expected. /KM

12Z TAFS: High level clouds are spreading into the region from
the northwest ahead of an approaching weather system. Light
precipitation has fallen from this deck around Deer Park and
Sandpoint and will be possible around Coeur D Alene, Kellogg,
and St Maries through 15z. A ragged stratus deck around 2500 ft
has been evident on satellite in N Idaho and mainly found between
KCOE-KSZT. It is not out of the question for patchy fog or stratus
to develop as the band of high clouds shifts east. Fog would be
more favored in the sheltered Methow Valley and stratus for Deer
Park to Spokane yet this comes with low confidence. Otherwise,
look for VFR skies under mid and high clouds. Be cautious of
increasing southwest winds today gusting around 20-25 mph across
the Columbia Basin and Palouse impacting Coeur D Alene, Spokane,
Davenport, Ritzville, and Pullman. Winds decrease 00-03Z then
pickup again after 08z as a robust system approaches.

Heads up, strong winds expected Sunday, especially Sunday
afternoon into Sunday night with a potent cold front. Periods of
low-level wind shear possible before winds surface. Areas of heavy
snow to impact the Cascade Crest and Idaho Panhandle around
Mullan. /sb

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Confidence in the
forecast for stratus/fog not happening is moderate given the
persistent wave clouds in place. If these clouds persist, VFR
skies are likely to persist. If these clouds break, a few hours of
stratus or patchy fog will be possible with a 10-15% chance of
occurring.
