Temperatures will remain extremely cold at the start of the week,
before gradually increasing through middle to late week. A
winter storm Tuesday night into Wednesday is forecasted to bring
heavy snow over a significant portion of the Inland Northwest.
More winter weather, with the potential for a wintry mix, is
possible later in the week.

.DISCUSSION...

...STRONG WINTER STORM LOOKS TO BRING MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW
ACROSS MUCH OF THE INLAND NORTHWEST ON WEDNESDAY...

A dynamic weather system will bring widespread moderate to heavy
snow over the region Tuesday Night into Wednesday. Prior to that
very cold temperatures will continue with widespread single digit
lows both above and below zero tonight with high temperatures
"warming" into the teens on Tuesday.

A low pressure system dropping down the British Columbia coast
will combine with an influx of pacific moisture from the west
producing widespread snow starting in Central Washington Tuesday
evening (after 7 PM) before spreading into Eastern Washington and
North Idaho during the late evening and overnight hours. Deep
isentropic ascent as an initial warm front moves through will
produce widespread snow Tuesday Night into Wednesday morning. Then
as the upper low dropping down off the BC coast swings into
southern BC and northern Washington Wednesday afternoon into the
evening a resurgence of moderate to heavy snow will encompass the
region. Not much, if any break, is expected between the two rounds
of snow. By the time all is said and done moderate to heavy snow
will accumulate with the Wednesday morning and evening commute
impacted. Given the cold temperatures, this will be the dry and
fluffy snow type, except a period of wet snow is possible on the
Palouse as a more pronounced warm sector moves into the area late
Tuesday afternoon and evening. The warm sector may even be
efficient enough to change snow to rain in the Lewiston-Clarkston
Valley, while other areas are expected to remain well cold enough
for snow. There is some uncertainty to this warm sector, but the
majority of the model solutions favor a colder scenario. And given
how cold the air mass is starting off, the colder scenario is
preferred keeping the Palouse as all snow. Thus the forecast
favors a higher end scenario to the snowfall forecast for the
Pullman and Moscow areas.

Current NBM snow probabilities for 4PM Tuesday through 4AM Thursday:

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories have been
issued across the region. /JW

Thursday to Monday: The Inland NW will remain active throughout
this period, while below normal temperatures at the start of the
period gradually warm to near or slightly above normal Saturday
into early next week. Thursday a weak warm front lifts into the
region as 500 mb ridge builds over the region, while weak impulses
ride into the region between Thursday and Friday before a more
robust wave pushes in Saturday. This will bring periodic
precipitation to the region. Timing could change as we get closer.
With that said, Thursday the highest precipitation potential sits
over the Cascades to southeast WA and lower ID. Thursday night
into Friday morning modest precipitation chance expand throughout
the region, with the higher risk briefly retreating to the
mountain zones Friday evening, before expanding throughout the
region overnight into Saturday morning. Initially on Thursday
temperatures are expected to be cold enough to support all snow,
except over parts of southeast WA and lower ID such as the
southern Palouse and L-C Valley. A mix of rain, snow and freezing
rain will be possible. Some light to moderate snow will remain
possible in the lowlands at around 0.5 to 3 inches, with the lower
amount of that range toward the the lee of the Cascades. Some
moderate to heavy snow will still be possible around the mountain
passes, including Stevens and where another foot of snow is
possible and Lookout and Fourth of July Pass where 3-5 inches is
possible. Precise numbers may change but this is what we are
looking at right now. Any ice from freezing rain is expected to be
light.

As we head into Thursday night and Friday models suggest that
milder air start to nudge north, at least aloft. This means some
freezing rain threat start to expand north into the Upper Columbia
Basin and Spokane area. Then as we head into Friday night and
Saturday that freezing rain/snow/rain mix lays over the Columbia
Basin and around the northern valleys too. By Saturday afternoon
that freezing rain threat becomes localized to the more sheltered
valleys across the Cascades and northern mountains. Confidence in
the details of this is still not high. Ensembles show the
probability of measurable ice (>=0.01 inch) at 10% Thursday and
10-50% for Thursday night through Saturday. But any ice can be
impactful so this will be monitored for sure. Snow amounts around
Friday look light in the lowlands at 0.5 to 2 inches, with that 2
inch amount toward the northeast WA and north ID mountain valleys.
The Cascades could see around 3 to 6 inches.

Then as we head into Sunday and Monday the Pacific remains open,
with continued systems moving into the region. This will continue
to provide the potential for precipitation going into early next
week at least. Overall by this time we will be milder. There will
still be the potential for some pockets of freezing rain early
Sunday in the sheltered valleys around the Cascades and western
basin. Yet we will be moving into a more mountain snow and lowland

18Z TAFS: A ridge of high pressure will remain over the Inland
Northwest through Tuesday with a dry air mass in place keeping
conditions generally VFR. The one exception will be for some
stubborn MVFR low stratus around the Pullman/Moscow Airport (KPUW)
and Lewiston Airport (KLWS), and also airports near water bodies
(e.g. Coeur d'Alene Airport, KCOE). Ceilings may temporarily drop
down to between 1-3 kft agl. Winds remaining light through
Tuesday. A significant winter storm will arrive Tuesday night with
much of the region receiving moderate to heavy snowfall.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: High confidence in
VFR conditions for a majority of the forecast area. Low confidence
