.A powerful winter storm will impact much of the region on Thursday 
into early Friday. This storm will deliver widespread snow which 
will be heavy over the Cascades and portions of southeast Washington 
and north-central Idaho. The snow will generally taper off Friday

.SYNOPSIS...
A round of snow will track across far southeast Washington and
the Lewiston area this morning. The weather pattern will then
turn much colder on Thursday into early next week with an Arctic
front. This will bring the potential for heavy snow, blowing snow,
and snow squalls the region Thursday into Thursday night. Bitterly
cold wind chills with northerly winds Friday through Saturday.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION ISSUED ON JANUARY 10TH AT 428AM:

...POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY SNOW, BLOWING SNOW, SNOW SQUALLS ALONG AN
ARCTIC BOUNDARY THURSDAY INTO THURSDAY NIGHT FOLLOWED BY BITTERLY
COLD AIR...

Today into Tonight: A quick hitting low pressure system will skirt
along the Washington/Oregon border this morning delivering light
snow to extreme southeastern Washington, Lewiston/Clarkston Valley
and on the Camas Prairie. Snow accumulations will generally range
from 1 to 3 inches with the Camas Prairie potentially picking up
local accumulations up to 4 to 5 inches. Snow is expected to fall
during the morning commute with slippery conditions expected. The
06Z NAM has the band forming a little bit further north between
Lewiston-Clarkston and Pullman-Moscow. This solution is more of an
outlier and will keep the focus of the Winter Weather Advisories
south of Pullman-Moscow; however, 1 to 2 inches for this area can be
expected here this morning. Shortwave ridging of higher pressure
moves over the region for Wednesday night with only some lingering
snow showers continuing at the Cascade crest and over the Idaho
Panhandle. This will be a little break before the potential for high
impact winter weather returns Thursday. The Blizzard Warnings for
the Cascade crest and Northeast Blue Mountains will continue for the
rest of the morning as well. Winds have decreased substantially, but
are still breezy. This is in addition to additional snow that is
expected for the rest of this morning as well.

Thursday through Friday: A well advertised Arctic front will push
down out of western Canada across the Inland Northwest on Thursday.
The west to northwest flow along the front will focus precipitation
along the Cascade crest, into the Central Panhandle Mountains, and
extend out across the Palouse to the Camas Prairie. Very cold
temperatures and steep lapse rates that come with the Arctic will
result in higher snow ratios (18/1 and higher) and bring stiff
winds. Winds ahead of the front will be westerly across the Columbia
Basin and into the Palouse region to the Camas Prairie. Expect snow
to come down heavy and blow around. Winds don't appear to be strong
enough to necessitate a blizzard warning, but could be blizzard like
at times. Steeper lapse rates will increase the potential for snow
squalls. These snow squalls could spawn anywhere from extreme
eastern Washington to the Idaho Panhandle. Winter storm watches are
in effect for southeast Washington into the southern to central
Idaho Panhandle. A winter storm watch has also been added for
western Chelan County (Stevens Pass). These areas will see the
potential for 7 to 10 inches of new snow beginning Thursday morning
and continuing into Friday morning. The higher terrain within these
watches will see the potential for greater than a foot of new
snowfall. Total accumulations into the Columbia Basin, Northeast
Washington and into North Idaho will be more in the range of 2 to 5
inches. These areas will likely need advisories and the prospect of
blowing snow with the winds, particularly down the Purcell Trench,
will make for hazardous travel. This will be a very complex winter
weather scenario. Once the snow starts to wind down, northerly winds
will kick up through Friday. Winds will be bitterly cold with wind
chills that look to dip down to between 20 to 30 below zero for much
of the northern half of the forecast area. /SVH

Friday night through Tuesday: Bitterly cold and unsettled conditions
are anticipated through much of the extended forecast. Below zero
minimum temps are expected for many locations each morning through
Monday, especially north of I-90. Saturday is looking like the
coldest morning for most places. Chances for snow are forecast most
days, particularly across the mountains. That said, the best chances
for accumulating snowfall are currently looking to occur from a
Friday night through Saturday time-frame. Amounts are expected to
range from 1 to 4 inches (with locally higher amounts) for the
lowlands, with greater amounts across the higher terrain. Confidence
in snow totals is still rather low at this time. /KD

.AVIATION...

18Z TAFS: This is a tough forecast in the short term as a couple
weak weather disturbances will bring potential snow to the eastern
TAFs through 20-21z or so. The first system is a narrow band of
snow with brief but locally heavy snow rates impacting KGEG-KSFF.
Accumulations should be less than a half inch if any. This
should move rapidly ESE and then the threat will diminish
significantly with residual MVFR cigs. The other system is over SE
WA and looks much less impressive on radar and satellite with
only sporadic showers. The threat for heavy snow with this looks
much less impressive, however MVFR/IFR cigs will likely continue
at KPUW with a lesser chance at KLWS. Farther west there is no
immediate threat of snow, and VFR conditions are expected to
prevail through the day at KEAT and eventually at KMWH once patchy
IFR fog breaks up this afternoon. The lull in the action at all
sites will be brief as an arctic cold front moves into the region
overnight. This should occur at the eastern TAF sites around 12z
with snow expected and IFR conditions. It should be of the
light/fluffy variety due to the cold air. Once the cold front
moves through after the TAF period the moderate S-SW winds will
turn to the NE. For EAT and MWH the snow and wind shift will
await until after 18z Thu.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Moderate
confidence on snow at KPUW, KGEG, KSFF, KCOE, KPUW, and KLWS
through the short term and moderate to high overnight. Low
confidence for how long the fog will persist at KMWH.
