Shower activity has diminished greatly over the last couple
hours, although there are still some quick hits of light rain left
on the radar. The big forecast question tonight is what to do
with the High Wind Watch from late Friday-Saturday. Do we convert
it to a Wind Advisory or a High Wind Warning. The guidance is very
conflicting regarding surface winds. The NBM has peak gusts
around 40 kt, while the WRF, NAM and HRRR are all showing at least
50 kts gusts along the coast Saturday morning. The global models
are much weaker, but the GFS does have 500 mb wind reaching up to 100
knots in the middle of the trough. The old thumb rule is surface
winds will be as much as 50% of 500 mb winds. That rule only
really applies in the cold air mass, where convection can mix the
winds down. The strongest winds in this case are southerlies
ahead of frontal passage, so we're certainly not expected
sustained winds to reach 50 knots at the surface. Regardless, it
does seem like the global models are under-doing the wind
forecast and they are dragging down the NBM. Two shifts overlap
during the next hour, and we will put our combined heads together
to generate the best possible wind forecast to base the warning
decision on.

Light showers on the backside of the upper low exiting to our east
will continue through the remainder of this afternoon and evening
with diminishing chances the farther south you go from the North Bay
down into the Central Coast. A quasi-warm front/stationary front in
vicinity of North Bay will keep scattered rain chances in the
forecast across Sonoma and Napa County today and tomorrow out ahead
of the next round of more moderate widespread rainfall setting in
late Friday through Saturday. The position of the aforementioned
rain activity across the North Bay wrt the stationary front will be
watched closely as any shift south could result in more rainfall
than currently forecasted, which would lead to increased flooding
concerns for that area. Farther south into the Bay Area, East Bay
and rest of the Central Coast will be much less impacted by any
shower activity for the remainder of tonight and tomorrow.

The forecast for the onset of steady, moderate (occasionally heavy)
rainfall Friday night and Saturday across the North Bay remains on
track. A potent storm system across the Pacific Northwest will
result in a broadening and deepening trough across our latitude. A
jet streak with +100kt winds at H30 will round the base of the
trough to our west during the day tomorrow, and reach our area by
tomorrow evening. Strong gusty south winds, especially along our
coastal areas have necessitated a High Wind Watch for strong wind
gusts up to 60 MPH for low lying areas, and 70 MPH or higher for
higher elevated areas above 900ft for Friday night through Saturday
afternoon. The North Bay continues to be the area most impacted by
increasing rainfall amounts, with their coastal ranges expecting
another 3-5" of rain for this next round. Lower lying areas and
interior valleys will see slightly lesser amounts, with the entirety
of the North Bay in a Flood Watch from Friday afternoon through
Saturday afternoon, and highlighted by the WPC in an Excessive Rain
Outlook for that same time period.
There is also a window for a slight chance (~10%) of thunderstorms,
primarily from the North Bay coastal areas south to the Santa Cruz
coast, early Saturday morning. The primary driver for the
thunderstorm chances is the cooler air aloft swinging through our
region along and behind the strong trough axis pivoting onshore
around 5-6am Saturday. The best chances for thunderstorms remain
over the coastal waters and the immediate coastline, but would
result in locally heavy rainfall rates and strong wind gusts. The
SPC does have this area highlighted for general thunderstorms as
well. A sting jet like feature (winds unlikely to meet accepted
criteria of 100kt @ ~H85) will produce the strongest wind gusts
Saturday morning into the afternoon when H50 winds increase to
+100kts and spread over our area. This is a dynamic storm system,
that is further complicated by the timing of a king tide this
weekend, adding to coastal flooding concerns and high surf and
subsequent beach hazards. Fortunately, this system is more
progressive than the last AR event, or there would be worse and
more wide ranging problems.
Sunday is mostly dry across our area, however another progressive
trough is expected to arrive Monday with another round of increasing
rain chances. Ridging begins to set in for the middle of next week,
when warmer and drier conditions will be welcomed.

area this evening. Surface observations indicate VFR-MVFR and a
few areas IFR. Cold air advection aloft and showers gradually ending
tonight and early Friday, a brief break then warm air advection aloft
results in periodic stratiform rain developing over the Bay Area
Friday, rain and wind spreading southeastward later Friday and Friday
night.
Vicinity of SFO...VFR-MVFR tonight with an isolated residual shower
still possible, but KMUX radar shows the showers are mainly to the

ending late tonight and Friday morning. Winds becoming light and
variable tonight, then southeast and increasing to 5 to 7 knots except

Some isolated light showers over the waters will continue through
the night before another rain band moves over the area on Friday.
Breezy winds and higher wave heights will keep hazardous
conditions for smaller craft for the remainder of the day. Winds
diminish overnight but gale force winds start to build by Friday
afternoon as a stronger storm system moves into our area. This
will bring another round of higher waves and rain into the
weekend. Occasional storm force gusts up to 50 kt will be
possible Saturday afternoon. Dry weather returns for Sunday then
another low brings rain to the coastal waters and bays Monday.

Previous forecast generally still on track. Still expecting a
larger swell well offshore currently to enter the northern waters
this afternoon. People should use caution if they venture to the
beaches/coastline/bay shoreline through the upcoming weekend.
Previous details: There will be multiple hazards across the Bays,
Pacific Ocean, and their associated beaches as three storm
systems take aim at the West Coast and King Tides return. A
Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued from 6 AM Thursday through
1 PM Monday along the bayshore of the San Francisco Bay and San
Pablo Bay with the highest tides: 6.74 ft at 8:12 am Thursday,
6.98 ft at 8:54 am Friday, 7.07 ft at 9:37 am Saturday, 7.02 ft at
10:22 am Sunday, and 6.82 ft at 11:08 am Monday. These very high
tides in tandem with long period northwesterly swell will allow
for large sets of waves to run a lot farther up the beaches. A
High Surf Advisory has been issued for 1 PM Thursday through 4 AM
Friday for all west and northwest facing beaches for breaking
waves of 18-22 feet. Other impacts will be rip current risk,
longshore current risk, gale-force gusts, slight thunderstorm
chances, and widespread rainfall. There are going to be poor
conditions everywhere, especially on the water or at the beach.
