Scattered showers continue into Saturday. Another storm system
takes aim on the region late Saturday night into Monday with
another round of heavy rain and gusty winds possible. Keep up with
forecast changes.

Proverbial calm before the storm. While shower activity has
diminished since this afternoon there are still showers move
through the region. Still no lightning, but heavy rain and small
hail are possible. In the near term, no update is needed as
forecast is on track.
All focus turns toward the developing pattern over the next 12-24
hours. Initially look at some of the 00Z model guidance - still on
track to see rapidly developing cyclogenesis off the coast over
the weekend. Wind, heavy rain, and thunderstorms will be the main
impacts. For a deeper dive read below...
That being said, early Saturday would be great time to make any
last preparations. Clean your gutters/street drains, prepare for
power outages, and have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Longwave pattern over the West Coast shows an upper level low
off the PacNW Coast pinwheeling southward and moist, fast, zonal
flow over California. This combination, in conjunction with
colder air aloft, has led to another active day across the Bay
Area and Central Coast. Latest NUCAPS soundings confirm weak
instability as observations over the coastal show small surface
CAPE. Simply put, convective environment continues. Afternoon
radar imagery continues to show scattered showers moving west to
east. While cold enough aloft to support small hail, convection
isn't deep enough for lightning. Stronger showers will also be
capable of producing brief heavy rain. Given the cold air aloft
snow level remain low (3-4k feet). Therefore, any passing shower
over higher terrain could also produce snow with minor
accumulations. This regime is forecast to persist into through at
least early Saturday.
The second half of Saturday is when the magic happens. The
pinwheeling upper low continues to drift southward along CA
Coast as the upper flow over the EPac begins to amplify (less
zonal). The amplifying upper level flow and the placement of the
jet will promote cyclogenesis well offshore. By Saturday
afternoon/evening the surface pattern off the CA Coast will looks
rather interesting with one deepening low pressure approaching
from the north and a second developing low inching its way closer
to the Central Coast. At this point, heavy rain will begin to
develop over the coastal water as the father west low pressure
moves eastward.

Thanks to upper level jet support expect rapid intensification of
the surface low pressure (southern/farther west low pressure)
from Saturday night through early Sunday morning. In fact, some of
the models have the low "bombing" out to below 990mb. If this
would actually occur it would meet criteria for a "bomb cyclone".
Regardless, pretty impressive drop in surface pressure. The
rapidly deepening low will do two things: usher in damaging wind
and advect sub-tropical moisture toward the coast.
The wind:southerly wind will increase initially over the coastal
waters before spreading over land by Sunday morning. The pattern
still has the earmarks of a "sting jet" with narrow jet of 70-80kt
at 925mb taking aim at the Big Sur Coast/Monterey Peninsula. If
anything recent model guidance has doubled down of wind
potential. Pretty good confidence on strong winds occuring as
recent ECMWF EFI highlights the Central Coast with a shift of
tails of 1. In other words, not only are winds very anomalous for
this time of year, but many of the ensemble members are on the
upper end (KMRY has a few members showing 65-75kt). Winds finally
ease through the day Monday. Needless to say, given saturated
soils do expect trees and power lines to come down. As a result,
High Wind Warning remains for all of the Central Coast/SF
Peninsula Coast/East Bay Hills with Wind Advisory elsewhere. One
other note about the strong wind...it will generate some decent
shear over the waters and possibly inland. SPC does mention a low
end chance for tornadoes, but it's still day 3 and it is very low
confidence at this point. Stay tuned...
The rain: Latest AR guidance shows the deepening low tapping into
anomalously high PWATs to the south. This moisture plume gets
aimed at the Central Coast. While there is lower uncertainty on
exact placement of said plume, confidence has increased from
yesterday that Santa Cruz southward will get the main push. That's
not to say the North Bay will go completely unscathed, but the
bulk will be focused farther south. Additionally, IVT and IWV
values are forecast to reach the moderate to strong category -
this would be the strongest of the season. This confidence is
further confirmed by the recent Excessive Rainfall Outlook from
WPC showing moderate risk for the Central Coast. All that being
said, rain will overspread the region Saturday night into Sunday
and peak Sunday and Sunday night. Rainfall amounts: most inland
areas will be 1-3", mts 2-4", and coastal mts 6-8". Given the
stronger winds some shadowing will be possible. A Flood Watch
remains for the forecast area and a Flash Flood Watch for the
River Fire Burn Area. Given the recent rains and predicted rain
larger rivers will have to be monitored for potential flooding.
Lastly, our colleagues at the USGS have stated the near surface
soil is saturated and given the forecast shallow landslides are
possible.
Conditions finally improve late Monday into Tuesday, but showers
remain.

(06Z TAFS)

VFR with few mid clouds carrying some light showers near the
terminals. Expect occasional light showers through most of the
TAF period until Saturday night where heavier rain bands are
expected to move over the terminals, which will bring MVFR
ceilings near SF Bay terminals. KSTS may experience IFR conditions
early Saturday morning with some models hinting of LIFR
visibilities, but low confidence to include in TAFs. Otherwise,
expect VFR through the TAF period for the remaining terminals.
Winds will shift S/SE and will become strong with chances of gust
up to 30 knots near the passes and deltas, Saturday night as the
front moves over the region.
Vicinity of SFO...VFR continues to prevail through most of the TAF
period until the heavier rain bands move over the terminal Saturday
night, creating MVFR conditions. S/SW winds will shift more S/SE by
Saturday night and become strong and gusty as the storm moves closer
to the terminal.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR with light showers over KMRY. Light
S/SE winds will start to increase Saturday afternoon into the
evening becoming breezy with chances of gusty winds up to 25 knots
near KSNS.

Elevated seas of 13-15 feet waves continue into the weekend but
the moderate period northwest swell will slowly diminish Saturday
night, reducing wave heights temporarily. An area of low pressure
is expected to quickly develop and strengthen across the waters,
moving eastward into the Central Coast waters. This will result in
very hazardous marine conditions on Sunday with storm force gusts
likely near the coast south of Pigeon Point. Possible rain
showers across the waters this weekend as the storm system
approaches the Central California. A large southerly swell will
quickly propagate across the waters Sunday and Monday with the
passage of this storm system brining elevated seas of 16-21 feet
waves.
