slider weather pattern.

An inside slider event is well underway as an upper-level trough
digs into the Great Basin. The ramifications of this pattern are
already being observed across the region with relative humidity 50-
70% drier than 24 hours ago and higher elevations recording wind
gusts to 50 mph with Mt. St Helena gusting as high as 75 mph.
Fire weather concerns will only increase throughout this event due
to the compounding effects of the antecedent conditions and a
backdoor cold front ushering in much drier air through the day
today. Winds will veer to become northeasterly/offshore through
the morning as the upper-level trough digs south and becomes a
cutoff low in the Desert Southwest. Winds largely on the order of
25-35 mph can be expected with gusts to 50 mph. Highest terrain,
ridgetops, gaps, and passes will be favored with isolated gusts up
to 65 mph. Every effort should be made to prevent a wildfire
spark always, but especially over the next two days.

The offshore pressure gradient will weaken and begin to reverse
Saturday night, restoring order and onshore flow to the region. The
return of onshore flow will help moderate temperatures, reestablish
the marine layer, and ease fire weather concerns going into next
week. The start of next week looks to be relatively quiet with a
stable zonal flow pattern dominating the Contiguous United States.

VFR across the board with hardly a cloud in the sky. While these
conditions will persist beyond the TAF period, strong northerly
winds will bring issues. All terminals have wind directions
between 340 and 360, and will continue to veer to N and NNE over
the TAF period. These strong winds from a non-standard direction
will bring cross-winds and low level wind shear to most stations.
Vicinity of SFO...High confidence VFR through the TAF period.
Surface winds have not strengthened as expected, and it's looking
unlikely that the Airport Weather Warning (gusts above 35 knots)
will actually verify. The 340 direction is creating a cross-wind
component at the 28 runways, but fortunately the lower wind
speeds are limiting this impact. Northerly winds should persist
through the night before backing to a NW direction Friday
afternoon. Despite this decrease in cross-winds, stronger winds
aloft will continue to be NNE, creating favorable conditions for
low-level wind shear.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR through the TAF period. Surface winds
have decreased drastically this evening as the boundary layer
becomes decoupled from the strong upper level flow. This means
there are likely pockets of dangerous low-level wind shear,
especially for smaller aircraft. As surface winds increase after
sunrise, the threat for LLWS will decrease.

Gale force winds continue into early Friday morning with wind
waves reaching 12-14 feet. Winds reduce slightly into Friday
afternoon but remain hazardous for small craft. Gale force gusts
build again into Friday night into early Saturday. Winds decrease
back to a moderate breeze by Saturday, allowing rough seas to
abate through the weekend.

Morning update...just completed coordination calls with fire
partners. No real change with ongoing Red Flag Warnings valid 11
PM Thursday until 5 PM Saturday for all Bay Area and Central Coast
zones, except for the coasts of Marin, Monterey, and Sonoma
Counties. Strong winds will develop Thursday, fortunately the
northwesterly direction will help to keep daytime relative
humidity in the 20-40% range. Fire weather conditions will
deteriorate Thursday night as a deep upper-level low drops into
the Great Basin, creating an offshore gradient that will promote
northeasterly/offshore winds that will result in rapid drying and
compressional warming with daytime relative humidity on Friday and
Saturday as low as 10-20%. The windiest timeframes will be
Thursday night into Friday morning and Friday night into Saturday
morning with winds largely on the order of 25-35 mph, gusts to 50
mph with isolated gusts up to 65 mph along the highest terrain and
ridgetops and through gaps and passes. While fuels are near
average for this time of year, they are forecast to dry out
through this inside slider event.
FUELS info: the impacts from the last heatwave definitely have
eased, but this round of offshore flow will cause a response
easily in the grasses/finer/10 hour fuels. Response to 100 hour
fuels will be noticed, but values will not reach critical levels.
Energy Release Component (ERCs) values increase as well across the
fire district, but fall short of record values.
Putting this all into perspective - the offshore flow is a
moderate event, but a few fires are possible with marginal fuels
and decent fire weather ingredients.
