.SYNOPSIS...

Active weather is in store beginning Friday as a series of
shortwaves move through the region, bringing multiple pulses of
rain to the Bay Area and Central Coast. The first being Friday
late afternoon through Friday night, then again Saturday morning
through evening, then again Sunday afternoon into Monday morning
(*timing could change). Chance for thunderstorms also exists
Sunday into Monday. Given saturated soils, there's a higher chance
for minor flooding and shallow landslides compared to other
storms we've seen thus far this winter. Dry weather is expected to
return after midweek lasting through the end of January.

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Friday)

500 mb ridge of high pressure is currently centered over the
Sierra/Great Basin region. This has resulted in dry, fairly benign
weather across the forecast area today. In addition, high clouds
are building in ahead of the next weather system, capping high
temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Rain is still on track to begin on Friday. Hi-res guidance shows
light showers could begin as early as Friday morning but the main
rain band associated with the approaching surface low will arrive
Friday late afternoon and evening. See below for more details on
the upcoming rain.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through next Wednesday)

Rain will start to taper off Friday night, but another pulse of
energy moves through early Saturday morning, bringing additional
rainfall lingering through Saturday morning. Combining Friday and
Saturday rain, 2-3" is expected across coastal terrain, 1-2" across
interior Bay Area, and 0.5-1" the further south and inland you go.
The brunt of this initial round of rain will occur Friday evening
and then again Saturday morning.

By Sunday morning, 500 mb trough will flatten and flow will become
quasi-zonal, allowing for subtropical moisture to funnel in over
the eastern Pacific into the west coast. Global guidance shows a
plume of high PWATs around 1-1.25 inches advecting into coastal CA
by Sunday eve into Monday morning. Increased moisture in addition
to favorable large-scale forcing corresponds to the period of
greatest concern as far as moderate to periods of heavy rainfall
rates. Sunday evening through Monday morning looks to be the
period where the forecast area will see rainfall amounts that
could be more impactful with 1-2" expected for inland regions and
2-4" expected for coastal regions, especially given the fact this
is on top of the rain received earlier Fri-Sat and soils are
saturated.

A 15-30% chance of thunderstorms also exists for this time period,
thanks to the favorable forcing (our location w.r.t. a stronger jet
streak as well as incoming SW trough), but also expecting increased
instability (MUCAPE of 100-200 J/kg) to move in late Sun-early
Monday. This means that the rain could be more convective in nature,
leading to localized higher rain rates and maybe even a rumble of
thunder or two.  As such, roadway flooding, rapid rises in creeks
and rivers, as well as widespread shallow mudslides are all hazards
that can be expected with this round of rain and potential
tstorms. The Weather Prediction Center highlights this risk for
flooding, featuring much of coastal CA in a "slight" risk (15%)
chance that rainfall exceeds flash flood guidance during the
Sunday morning to Monday morning timeframe.

Want to point out that these rounds of rain aren't on the scale of
what we saw last winter with back to back impactful atmospheric
rivers, but still is expected to be one of the more impactful
systems we've seen thus far this winter. While rivers/creeks are
expected to rise quickly, many will likely not reach flood stage,
but more flashy creeks and streams (especially in Sonoma County)
have a higher chance of rising enough to cause minor roadway
flooding. Please be sure to not drive through flooded roadways,
pay attention to roadway closures, and don't try to go around
flood barriers. Be prepared and stay up to date with the
forecast!

Luckily it looks like we'll get a break from the unsettled, wet
pattern as dry weather and ridging builds into the region midweek
next week through the end of January.

.AVIATION...
(00Z TAFS)

VFR across all terminals ahead of Friday's cold front. As this
system approaches, flight conditions will gradually deteriorate
with VFR ceilings overnight and widespread MVFR conditions expected
by the afternoon. There is a chance for some patchy mist
overnight, but the signal is not as strong as it has been over the
last couple days. As usual, STS is most at risk for fog
development, but the TAF only goes to 4SM in mist. The increased
wind ahead of the cold front should help keep the boundary layer
more mixed tonight.

Vicinity of SFO...Currently VFR with gentle, swirling winds.
Winds should soon stabilize into a SE regime as the pressure
gradient associated with the approaching cold front begins to
dominate over the diurnal effects. Ceilings are expected to
gradually drop overnight, with MVFR conditions arriving Friday
afternoon or evening. The rain rates are expected to be light, and
the visibility should reamin MVFR-VFR for the majority of
Friday's rain.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Currently VFR with high clouds and SE
drainage flow at both MRY and SNS. There is a pretty strong signal
in the probabilistic guidance that MRY will develop MVFR or IFR
ceilings in the morning, well before the rain arrives. As such the
TAF splits the difference with OVC015 by 19/15UTC. SNS is less
likely to have ceilings so low. The main concern at SNS is strong
SE drainage winds, which may gust to gale force Friday afternoon
as the syntopic set-up and valley orientation will support strong
down-gradient flow.

.MARINE...
(Tonight through next Tuesday)

Increasing southerly winds expected through the night and becoming
fresh to strong as the next front approaches on Friday.  These
winds will create dangerous conditions for small craft. Rain
chances begin over the waters mid morning of Friday and last
through the weekend as multiple rain systems move through the
region. Come Saturday, winds decrease to become moderate out of
the south, and persist through the start of the next workweek.
Thunderstorms are possible over the waters Sunday into Monday,
where wind gusts and seas could be locally higher near storms.

.HYDROLOGY...

Due to the potential for significant rainfall over the weekend, the
WPC continues to advertise a slight risk of excessive rainfall,
expanding its coverage to include much of coastal California for
Sunday. A slight risk means that there is a 15% chance that rain
totals could exceed flash flood guidance issued by the River
Forecast Center in Sacramento. A Hydrologic Outlook (WMO header
FGUS76) has been issued and updated to highlight the potential for
rapid rises along rivers, streams, and creeks. The main
hydrologic issues will be nuisance and minor flooding across the
region, and an increased risk for shallow landslides as soils
across the Bay Area reach saturation. Stay tuned to the lastest
forecast for the most accurate weather information.
