.DISCUSSION...
It is another bitterly cold morning across the Northern Rockies
with Arctic air still settled in. Overnight cooling was aided by a
lack of cloud cover in many areas. As we head into today and
Tuesday, a ridge of high pressure will be moving overhead. The
stable conditions will lead to valley inversions and strengthening
cold pools, meaning our warm up will be gradual. Stratus and fog
development will be possible the next couple of mornings in this
pattern as well.
Confidence continues to increase in a widespread snowfall event
impacting the Northern Rockies beginning late Tuesday night. A
trough of low pressure will be moving across from west to east on
Wednesday, which is when a bulk of the precipitation is expected
to fall. Forecast models have been trending higher with overall
snowfall amounts over the past couple days, with the heaviest
snowfall expected in north-central Idaho and northwest Montana.
Winter storm watches have been issued this morning for those
locations. Valleys across the watch area have around a 50-60%
probability of receiving at least 5 inches of snow. Mountains
within the watch area have a 70-80% probability of at least a foot
of snowfall. West-central and southwest Montana valleys have a
40-50% probability of at least 3 inches of snow with this system.
In addition to the potentially significant snowfall, forecast
models have been trending toward the arrival of a modified Arctic
cold front in northwest Montana by late Wednesday. While this
front would not pack the punch of this past weekend’s record
breaking event, it would still bring cold temperatures and
potential enhancement of snowfall. Currently, locations like
Whitefish and Kalispell have around a 30% probability of sub-zero
low temperatures by Thursday morning.
After Wednesday’s storm system moves on, a ridge of high pressure
is expected to build for the end of the week. Despite high
pressure, this period is unlikely to be dry. This is due to the
fact that Pacific moisture will be moving into the region, along
with subtle disturbances in the westerly flow aloft. This will
likely lead to a continuation of occasional snow showers,
especially in the mountains. Temperatures are expected to climb
back to near seasonal averages by the weekend. /KS

.AVIATION...Periods of light snow have continued off and on
overnight at KBTM, leading to periods of MVFR ceilings and
visibility. Drier air moving in aloft should limit this activity
after 15/1200z. Otherwise, a low level deck of stratus clouds
currently exists across north-central Idaho, southwest Montana,
the south side of Flathead Lake, and the Mission valley. This
stratus will likely be slow to break today as high pressure builds
in aloft, causing the higher terrain to be obscured. Otherwise,
cold and calm conditions will persist over the airspace. Low
stratus and fog will again be possible tonight into Tuesday
morning.
