.DISCUSSION...Arctic air has arrived along the Divide with a 3am
temperature of 3F at East Glacier. Rapidly dropping temperatures
begin at Marias Pass this morning. The arctic front then slowly
moves down the US-2 corridor, leading to hazardous conditions as
temperatures rapidly drop, cold wind chills develop, and
snow/blowing snow occur. The brunt of the cold air, gusty winds,
and increasing snow are not expected into the Flathead Valley
until mid/late afternoon. The arctic front will gradually march
south and west overtaking the rest of Northwest Montana by early
Thursday with areas of light to moderate snow continuing.
Another impact today will be a disturbance trekking into north-
central Idaho early this morning with areas of light to moderate
snow. Median snow ranges are 1 to 3 inches for the
Camas Prairie with 3 to 6 inches on the terrain. Light snow
spreads eastward into western Montana (mainly south of the I-90
corridor) and Lemhi County mid to late morning, thus the ongoing
winter weather advisories were left in place through late morning.
Road conditions early this morning are quite variable even
without any additional light snow, check for the latest
conditions at www.511.idaho.gov or www.511mt.net.
Thursday becomes particularly interesting across western Montana as
the arctic front very slowly descends southward, and a surface
low slides from eastern WA into north-central Idaho. This sets up
a very favorable scenario for widespread moderate to heavy snow
just north of the low's track. Widespread snow will be focused
across northwest Montana Thursday morning, spreading southward
very gradually through Friday morning. Ahead of the front,
conditions are conducive for snow squalls. Brief heavy snow and
wind gusts of 30-40 mph in squalls will make for highly variable
travel conditions. The highest potential for snow squalls will be
the I-90 corridor and southward Thursday afternoon/evening.
Overall, median snow amounts of 3 to 6 inches are forecast for the
valleys of northwest and west- central Montana. Probabilities for
over 4 inches over 48 hours ending Saturday morning range from
60-80% for many lower elevations of the Northern Rockies. There is
a potential for even heavier totals in a narrow band 50-100 miles
north of where the surface low tracks. Blowing and drifting snow
could be very problematic for travelers in areas along and north
of the arctic boundary as well. There is still uncertainty in the
exact timing of the arctic front which will impact where the
heaviest snow falls, please stay tuned.
Across north-central Idaho, periods of snow and snow squalls are
anticipated Thursday through Friday morning as well. Gusty
westerly winds of 25-35 mph on Thursday afternoon/evening combined
with falling snow will likely make for difficult travel. Median
snow amounts stand at 6-9 inches on the Camas Prairie/Orofino,
with 12+ inches on the terrain.
Bitterly cold temperatures are still expected on Friday into the
weekend across western Montana. Probabilities for temperatures of
-20F or colder are 70 to 80 percent for the valleys of Northwest
Montana. Wind chills of -20 to -40 are forecast across western
Montana on Friday and Saturday mornings, near 0F for lower
elevations of north- central Idaho.
A surprising amount of uncertainty exists with snow chances this
weekend as models are at odds with how far south the arctic front
will spread. If the front makes it well into southern Idaho, then
the better snow chances will remain south of the Northern Rockies.
Other models give much of our area a widespread moderate to heavy
snow event. For now, the forecast continues to be a blend of
solutions with a decent chance (40-60%) for at least a moderate
snow event, mainly from I-90 southward.

.AVIATION... A shortwave will move over north- central Idaho
early this morning that will spread widespread light to moderate
snowfall from Grangeville Idaho, east to KHRF, KSMN from
10/1200Z-10/2000Z. In northwest Montana, an arctic front will
slowly work down the US-2 corridor this morning, reaching KGPI mid
to late afternoon with an increase in winds, sudden drop in
temperatures and increase in snowfall.
