.DISCUSSION...Although drier air has moved into northwest Montana
behind the first short wave, water vapor imagery is showing the
moisture associated with the second short wave descending south
from British Columbia.
The modified Arctic air mass barely shows up on regional surface
observations beyond northwest winds, cooling post frontal is quite
minor for this initial surge. Timing remains this afternoon for
the Flathead Valley, by evening into the Mission Valley, and
eventually overnight Tuesday for the I-90 corridor. High
resolution models are less than enthused for organized
precipitation along the Arctic Front. Still brief but moderate
snow is possible, lowered visibility with northeast winds up to 25
mph, and falling temperatures post frontal.
There is rapid drying behind the front and the Arctic boundary may
retreat or at least the pressure gradient relax during the day
Wednesday. Timing differences remain between models but moisture
increases from the west beginning Wednesday evening over north-
central ID and west-central MT. Around the time that moisture
increases the Arctic re-energizes and pushes back towards the I-90
corridor and potentially south into the Bitterroot Valley. This
subtle and shallow Arctic air mass will be just enough to negate
some of the downsloping effects of 25 to 35 kts westerly mid-level
winds. One to three inches is forecast for western Montanan
valleys, while higher terrain receives 4 to 8 inches, with locally
higher amounts in the Bitterroot Crest.
Snow levels will subtly creep up in north-central ID limiting snow
accumulations in valleys 3500 feet or lower. While 4 to 8 inches
of snow in the Clearwater Mountains can be expected. Winter
driving conditions over Lolo and Lost Trail Passes will be present at
times through Thursday evening.
The temperature forecast is not as cold compared to 24 hours ago,
however, cold wind chills can be expected both Wednesday and
Thursday mornings in northwest Montana and along the Continental
Divide.
The Arctic is quickly moderated by Saturday afternoon as a weak
wave pushes up from the southwest bringing a period of light snow
to the mountains of Lemhi County ID and southwest MT overnight
Saturday.

.AVIATION...During the afternoon a Arctic Cold Front will slide
southwest from the Continental Divide affecting KGPI by 13/2100z.
Expect a brief period of snow, gusty northeast winds up to 22 kts,
with reductions in visibility and ceilings. This front will
continue its movement south and west through the evening affecting
KBTM by 14/0300z and KMSO 14/0700z. There is less confidence in
precipitation along the front during the overnight period but
gusty northeast winds are expected. KHRF and terminals in Idaho
are not expected to be affected by the front through Wednesday
afternoon.
