Key Messages:

1. Prolonged windy conditions across the entirety of the forecast
area, but especially the east Tennessee mountains and adjacent
foothills. These conditions last into Wednesday.

2. Continued above normal temperatures - roughly 15 degrees above
normal.

Discussion:

A trough over the intermountain west will interact with a strong
subtropical jet over the four corners region as it shifts east
today, leading to surface cyclogenesis from the central/northern
plains eastward into the upper midwest today and tonight. Locally,
increased lift well ahead of an associated cold front will lead to
increasing rain chances, along with strengthening low level flow and
resulting windy conditions across the CWA.

Regional radar imagery shows scattered showers developing across
western Tennessee early this morning, associated with a strong low
level jet and increasing isentropic ascent along the 300 and 305 K
theta surfaces. Cloud heights are still in the 6-8k ft AGL range,
and I'm not seeing a lot of rain reaching the ground just yet in
surface obs. Suspect that's partially due to observation density
though. However, lift and shower coverage are expected to increase
and shift eastward through daybreak and shortly thereafter, and
guidance is in good agreement in this regard so will have some high
end rain chances through midday or early afternoon, especially in
the north where the best forcing will be. We'll see a lull in rain
chances this afternoon and evening before they ramp up again
overnight in advance of the approaching cold front with this system.
Could see a few rumbles of thunder, both this morning and again
tonight, but expect mostly just showers.

The main forecast item of note in the short term will be the winds.
Cove Mountain has been gusting to around 55 mph for a few hours now,
and even Camp Creek has been in the 30-35mph range most of the
night. The former wouldn't be too alarming as Cove Mtn is always a
windy place, but the fact that Camp Creek has been gusting to near
advisory levels despite the H85 winds not being too favorably
aligned for mountain wave winds has me wondering if wind headlines
won't need further revision before the day shift takes over. As it
stands, bumped up the start time for all of the wind advisory
products outside of the Smokies by 3 hrs as guidance has sped up the
arrival time of strong winds as well as the cold front tomorrow.
Also went ahead and converted the high wind watch to a warning for
the Smokies and bumped the start time of that up a bit like the
other products. Expect to see gusts of 30-40mph most everywhere over
the next 24-36 hrs with higher gusts in the plateau and east TN
mountains. The Smokies seem to be a lock for gusts to around 70mph
given Cove Mountain's current gusts, with the rest of the east TN
mountains as well as plateau areas seeing gusts of 45-50mph. At this
time, did not expand the wind advisory into the TN valley, nor
expand to include the higher elevations of our VA counties. But that
may wind up being necessary. Will continue to monitor the winds in
the Smokies through the end of the shift and may wind up needing to
update before the day shift arrives. If so, will make a call on
expanding to the valley and VA counties at that time.

Discussion:

Wednesday could be a massive letdown with the way things have
trended tonight. Cold front may yield unpleasant surprises for many,
with timing coming in a little earlier tonight. Blended NBM with
NBM10 and HREF for max temperatures, with midnight temperatures
Wednesday morning likely will be the daily high temperatures for the
wider region. Temperatures will then be deprived of an opportunity
to rebound, as the front makes a daytime arrival and brings cooler
air from the northwest in behind. CAPE ahead of the frontal line of
showers is meager, but present, so thunder is a possibility. Lapse
rates just aloft and the weak thermos should keep any severe
potential at bay, which is nice since otherwise there's plenty of
shear.

After the front, temperatures will quickly cool through the evening,
but think the NBM was too aggressive on snow potential Wednesday
evening so pretty much removed it outside of the mountains of East
Tennessee and southwest Virginia. Airmass behind the front is fairly
dry, with only a thin and weak moisture profile evident in a modeled
cross section. So, despite the shift up in earlier timing, am
maintaining consistency from the day shift with zero to trace snow
up in the mountains, zero elsewhere. Temperatures next couple days
will be flat and cool, then a rebound arrives with the Friday system
as a shortwave lifts out of the southern Rockies and helps bring
back stronger southerly flow and warmer air to us. After that the
deterministic solutions diverge on the upper air pattern, with a
longwave trough expected to be exiting the Rockies sometime early
next week. GFS and Euro ensembles resemble their respective
deterministic solutions, so no help there. Chances of rain will be
on the increase though sometime on Monday next week on past the end
of the period.

Warm moist advection will bring MVFR CIGS to KCHA, along with
scattered SHRA across much of east TN, between roughly 11z and 18z
today. Some downslope components to low level flow across the
Appalachians should keep KTYS and KTRI in largely VFR conditions,
save some temporary visibility restrictions from showers. In
addition to the SHRA, do expect some prolonged gusty conditions of
20-25kt at KTYS and KCHA beginning this afternoon and lasting
through the end of the period. Not expecting gusts at KTRI through
06z.
