Discussion:

A low to midlevel ridge will be building over the area today,
providing dry and sunny conditions, a welcome window of pleasant and
tranquil weather between systems. With a SW surface wind, full sun,
and rising heights aloft, temperatures will reach into the 50s for
most of the area. Winds could get a little gusty in the late morning
and early afternoon with boundary layer mixing and the SW flow up
the Valley, but probably less than 20 mph.

Tonight, the ridge will shift to our east and a deep southerly flow
regime will develop. Isentropic lift develops after midnight,
spreading clouds into southern sections. A cross-mountain 850 mb
flow of 30-40 kt begins to ramp up between 09-12Z, but the real
mountain wave enhancement should be after 12Z. The strengthening
southerly flow will lead to temperatures rising slightly late in the
night, with lows in the 30s occurring just after midnight.

Key Messages:

1. A dynamic system will affect the area on Friday, bringing another
high wind event to the mountains and foothills and breezy conditions
area-wide. Convective showers and a few embedded thunderstorms are
expected, which could produce damaging winds.

2. VERY cold temperatures set up next week, lows approaching single
digits, and wind chills near or below 0 for Tuesday and Wednesday
mornings.

3. Confidence is increasing for potential accumulating snow during
the first half of next week.

Discussion:

Friday will be an active weather day with the primary hazard being
strong winds area wide, and some afternoon thunderstorms. The main
culprit of the weather will be a strong low pressure system
increasing in strength as it traverses up through the Ohio River
Valley and brings with it a strong LLJ across the Ohio and Tennessee
Valleys. High Resolution hourly models are generally painting a LLJ
out of the south increasing in strength up to around 80 knots at the
850mb level, with the peak intensity occurring during the day on
Friday. The orientation is favorable for mountain wave winds in the
mountains again, similar to what we experienced Monday night into
Tuesday in which 90 mph winds were recorded, and that cannot be
completely ruled out again in the mountains for Friday. Even though
its still a bit of a ways out, will upgrade the High Wind Watch to a
High Wind Warning as confidence is high on meeting criteria, and
will also issue a Wind Advisory for the rest of the forecast area
for Friday. It's possible some additional locations may reach High
Wind Warning criteria on Friday, but instead of playing the waiting
game, will issue an Advisory and upgrade some counties if it looks
like the winds are expected to be stronger in a parcticular
location.

Other impacts of this system on Friday will be the rain and
thunderstorms. Expect showers to move into southeast TN around
sunrise on Friday and spread east/northeastward throughout the
morning. As we move into the afternoon there looks to be enough
instability for some embedded thunderstorms. These storms could
bring down the strong winds in the LLJ to the surface causing wind
damage, especially if the storms become more linear in nature as the
afternoon progresses.

This system will quickly move out of the region and we should be
precipitation free before sunrise on Saturday. This will lead to a
colder, but generally quiet weather for Saturday and Sunday.

Early next week will see a dramatic change in the weather brought on
by much colder temperatures for first half of the work week. The two
main impacts for the first part of the week will be bitterly cold
temperatures/wind chill values and possibly accumulating snowfall in
the Valley. Fairly high confidence on the very cold temperatures
with the worst mornings being Tuesday and Wednesday mornings where
ambient temperatures look to drop into the teens, and widespread
single digits Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning will be the
coldest wind chill morning as the winds will be about 5-15 mph out
of the west dropping wind chill values to near zero area-wide and
well below zero in the higher elevations.

The other aspect of this system will be the possibility of
accumulating snowfall across the Valley for Monday through Tuesday.
QPF amounts look somewhat limited for this event, but if the
temperature forecast verifies it will be favorable for snowfall
across much of the area. Probabilistic guidance continues to show a
greater than 50% chance to see over an inch of snow along Interstate
40, with better chances to see more snowfall as you go further
northwest, with around a 20% to see an inch of snow near
Chattanooga. Probabilities of seeing over 3 inches of snow drops down
to about 30% along Interstate 40. So currently most ensemble
guidance is painting possibly Winter Weather Advisory criteria
snowfall amounts for the first half of next week. This is still
several days out and the QPF amounts can change quite a bit with
systems like this, so make sure to stay tuned to the latest forecast
and don't just pick out the highest forecast snowfall totals you see
on social media as the most likely scenario.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Another strong system will affect the area Friday and Saturday.
Another mountain wave event is expected across the east TN
mountains and foothills. A High Wind Watch has been issued for
these areas from Friday morning through Friday evening. Showers
and embedded thunderstorms are also expected, which could bring
damaging winds to the surface.

Early next week, expect very cold temperatures to move into the
region with increasing potential of snowfall Monday to Tuesday.
Tuesday to Wednesday, high temperatures are likely to stay below
freezing with lows approaching single-digits, especially if snow
is on the ground. Below zero wind chills are also increasingly
possible.
