Key Messages:

1. A high end mountain wave event will develop tonight, with very
high winds expected in the mountains and foothills. Strong winds
will also develop in the Plateau, southern TN Valley, and higher
terrain of SW VA tonight.

2. Heavy rain will spread into the area tonight and continue into
Tuesday morning, with diminishing precip Tuesday afternoon.
Total rain amounts between 1-3 inches are expected area wide.

Discussion:

No major changes to the forecast reasoning for the short term as the
models continue to show a potent low pressure system crossing the
region tonight and Tuesday. The main impact with this system will be
extremely high winds in the mountains and foothills due to mountain
wave enhancement, with heavy rain being a secondary impact, mainly
for areas south of I-40.

Quiet weather can be expected today as a ridge axis over the area
this morning shifts eastward. Clouds in northern sections this
morning are in an area of low level cold advection under a strong
inversion, but these clouds should erode later in the morning as the
surface high shifts east and daytime mixing ensues. Current cirrus
coverage should push east with the upper jet and leave mostly sunny
skies through the day, allowing temperatures to rise into the 50s.

Tonight, the pressure gradient will rapidly tighten as a deep low
pressure system tracks across OK and MO. The strengthening cross-
mountain flow and stable layer at mountaintop level will be ideal
for mountain waves. With the NAM showing a 90+ kt LLJ, it would not
be surprising to see gusts over 100 mph in some wind-prone
locations, with gusts to 80 mph being common in the mountains and
foothills. Given the high confidence in these conditions developing,
the High Wind Watch will be upgraded to a Warning. In addition,
eastern Polk/Cherokee/Clay counties will be added to the Warning as
the ridgetops in that area will likely reach warning criteria gusts
by midnight. Outside the mountains, the NBM probability of wind
gusts exceeding 40 mph is high across the southern Valley and
Plateau starting this evening. In these high-end mountain wave
events, we historically have seen even small ridges in that area
getting strong winds, so a Wind Advisory will be issued for that
area. Later tonight, mainly after 06Z, those 40+ mph gust
probabilities pick up in the higher terrain of the northern Plateau
and SW VA, so those areas will also be included in a Wind Advisory.
The central and northern Valley areas will be in a shadow area with
lower winds tonight and Tuesday morning, but will increase on
Tuesday afternoon as low level winds shift to a more SW direction.
A Wind Advisory will likely be needed for that area, but will
allow later shifts to evaluate and issue if needed due to the
later onset time.

Inital precip associated with isentropic lift will begin to spread
into our SW counties this evening. Precip begins to intensify late
tonight as a zone of strong frontogenetic forcing enters the area.
Elevated instability is very low but with the strong forcing, a few
thunderstorms may be possible in southern sections. High PW values
will lead to intense rainfall rates which may result in some
localized flooding, but the progressive nature of the front should
limit widepsread flooding problems. By the afternoon, precip will be
decreasing as the dry slot moves overhead and forcing moves east.
Total rainfall amounts are likely to range from around 1 inch in the
rain shadow areas of the northern TN Valley up to around 3 inches in
the upslope terrain areas of SE TN and SW NC.

.LONG TERM...

Key Messages:

1. Breezy winds to continue into Wednesday before diminishing. Wind
advisory may be needed for Wednesday morning.

2. Light snowfall possible Wednesday morning in higher elevations of
the Plateau but more likely in high elevations of the East TN and
southwest VA mountains.

3. Next significant system with another round of strong winds and
healthy dose of rainfall to arrive Friday.

Discussion:

Dynamic pattern continues. Late Tuesday there will likely be a
slight lull in the gusty winds as the jet of winds aloft moves east
with the precipitation and the pressure gradient on the backside of
the system is still tightening. Winds will increase back to near or
at wind advisory criteria heading into Wednesday morning off the
pressure gradient, and its likely we will need a Wind Advisory for
at least the northern half of East Tennessee into our Virginian
counties. That would roughly match the best NBM probabilities of 40+
mph wind gusts. The resurgence of the wind does not last long
however, as the departing low means the pressure gradient relaxes
and thus the winds drop heading into Wednesday evening.

Along with strong backside winds, the low will be advecting more
cold air in, with H85 temps of -5 to -7C. Couple of things to note
though, first with the flow orientation being more westerly it's not
a true northwest flow event. Secondly, the GFS cross section and
NAM/GFS soundings suggest the moisture within the TN valley might
not be that deep, and so crystal formation within any orographic
lifting might stay below the DGZ layer. Still, another round of
light snowfall accumulation is possible in the higher elevations.
All in all Wednesday will be a miserable day.

Upper heights will be on the increase after the low and trough
skedaddle Wednesday, and our next system will be ejecting out of the
southern Rockies heading our way late Thursday. So the good news is
we get a reprieve. The bad news is its a short reprieve and this
next system looks to contain more strong winds, both in the form of
mountain winds on the front end, and pressure gradient forced winds
on the back end. As far as rainfall, as is usual ensemble guidance
isn't as enthusiastic on rain, with values around a half to three
quarters of an inch. Those in the foothills of the East TN mountains
will have to deal with rain shadow effects again until winds pivot
and allow showers to work in, as is usual. Finally though its all
the way at the end of the period, the weekend looks to be calm and
cold.&&

However, in the last 6-10 hours of this period, winds will be
increasing rapidly above the surface, creating LLWS conditions. At
CHA, some of these strong winds aloft may reach the surface and
lead to gusts of 20-30 kt, but TYS and TRI will maintain surface
winds less than 10 kt. Low clouds and showers may begin to spread
into CHA late in this TAF period as well.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Scattered light showers will continue this afternoon and some
snow will mix with the rain, especially over the higher
elevations. Light snow accumulations will be possible mainly at
elevations above 3000 feet. Showers will come to an end later
this afternoon.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Conditions appear favorable for a significant mountain wave event
that will produce extremely high winds across the mountains and
foothills of East Tennessee Monday night and Tuesday. Wind gusts
up to 80 mph are expected, potentially higher in some locations
that are prone to high winds. Heavy rainfall is also expected at
times with this system from Monday night into Tuesday, which may
result in flooding.

Another strong system will affect the area Friday and Saturday.
Although details are uncertain this far out, this system may have
the potential to produce high winds in the mountains, as well as
heavy rainfall for much of the area.
